Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

I know; both twins put their applications in early. But offers are only coming for the one with Oxbridge on the list, despite them being equal prospects on paper.

The timings of offers between different courses and universities vary enormously. If you look at what is being offered patterns are emerging.

They don't see whether the applicant has applied to oxbridge. So its just coincidence that your DC who has applied to oxbridge is the one with other offers coming through.

And to do with the course. You're more likely to get an early offer from a less popular course. Those such as economics, PPE etc which are ultra popular at the moment are more likely to be held back so that they can properly assess the applicant pool.

DeadDonkey · 27/10/2022 10:00

DS got his PPE offer from Manchester within a couple of days - application submitted on a Friday and offer received on a Monday. Nothing so far from the others, York, Lancaster and Aberdeen - although Lancaster did say they aim to offer within 15 days which gives them until Saturday.

HoneyMobster · 27/10/2022 10:07

DS has had politics / economics offers from Exeter and Nottingham so I don't think that's a factor. I don't think he'll hear from Edinburgh or Durham for a while, more to do with the institutions than the subject IMO

multivac · 27/10/2022 10:10

Thanks for the clarifications; I'll put my tin foil hat away and try patience! 😎

NCforthis864 · 27/10/2022 10:15

Open applications to Ox are being allocated to colleges now and these are filtering through via emails.

I also think some departments are better organised and some allow administrators to make offers while others insist the academics (who are busy with other priorities) read through the applications. You also have some prioritising overseas applications or contextual applications first.

DD had an email from Christ Church this week saying her application was being considered and giving details about how to submit any written work. Also asked for a photo.

Ok thanks… DS also applied to Christchurch so I’m sure he’ll get his email soon.

beachcitygirl · 27/10/2022 11:10

My daughter has been asked to submit two pieces of written work to Cambridge (English lit)

I'm
Not sure if that is true of all
Applicants or only those being considered for interview, it's not clear. Anyway she's excited.

Revengeofthepangolins · 27/10/2022 12:34

On timing, be aware that, as someone said above, quite a few places work through their international and contextual applicants first, and the non differentiated ones are processed later for the remaining places. So don’t panic if you hear of offers for your DC’s course and uni cropping up elsewhere. Durham for example

PettsWoodParadise · 27/10/2022 13:46

DD has first offer in from Leicester ABB for English, reduced by a grade if she does well in EPQ, DD isn’t sharing more than that so don’t know if that means BBB or ABC. Waiting on Durham, York, UCL, C.

bettbburg · 27/10/2022 15:02

We are waiting for St A and Edinburgh so aren't expecting to hear anything soon.

balzamico · 27/10/2022 16:07

@Firefox1066 dd has heard nothing from Oxford yet. She has the HAT test next week in school and I believe has to submit written work but I don't know when (she not keen to talk too much about it)

Written work has to be submitted by 11-59pm on Thursday 10th November.

Can I very respectfully ask if we can pull this fantastic thread back on course please?

For those who applied to O, have any of your DC’s had acknowledgment emails from the actual colleges themselves yet?

DS received acknowledgement yesterday from Oxford college he applied to.

Not sure where you are going with this post NC.

'Twitterland' or no...

The fact that majority of 'Prime Ministers' have been trained (not necessarily educated) at Oxford since the year dot - doesn't speak well for Oxford actually, now does it?

Given especially we are on our fourth Prime Minister in a year and a laughing stock globally because of it.

Don't get the point of your post, if there is one...?

Durham University students queue overnight to secure accommodation www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-63391102

Just read this, it must be so stressful for them. It has put Durham promptly to the bottom of DS’s choices.

DeadDonkey · 28/10/2022 08:29

DS has had his application acknowledged by the college he’s applied to - he just hadn’t bothered to tell me.

goodbyestranger · 28/10/2022 10:30

The situation in Durham at the moment is completely ghastly.

Karmacat · 28/10/2022 10:32

OnePlusOneEquals this is a nightmare Durham definitely needs more thinking about it now.

goodbyestranger · 28/10/2022 10:42

Durham's plan is to continue to expand student numbers. Anyone who knows Durham can literally see the problems with expansion.

Mine too. Had to ask him

Turns out I'm another who's child has heard from their college but. It thought not mention it 🙄
HAT next week and needs to submit work by 10/11 (to study history at O)
