Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

Acknowledgment by the college is purely administrative, it's not surprising it's not worth a mention.

goodbyestranger · 28/10/2022 14:18

It would possibly be of more interest for those making an open application, to see where they'd been allocated. Although they could have determined that themselves by making a direct application..... And again, the allocation means nothing of consequence.

DeadDonkey · 28/10/2022 15:28

@balzamico @babysteps22 DS didn't think it was important - and he's probably right, but it would have been nice to know!

PettsWoodParadise · 28/10/2022 17:45

After years of being proud and relived DD manages her own admin, I am a tad jealous of parents who still do this for their DCs! It is killing me and I have to stop myself asking if there are any updates.

DS has had his application acknowledged by the college he’s applied to - he just hadn’t bothered to tell me.

Snap! I asked ds when he thought he might hear and he said "oh, they emailed me yesterday"

Firefox1066 · 28/10/2022 18:58

The main reason for getting it is to see where Christchurch want him to send the two pieces of written work to.

DS still hasn’t received anything but is purely focused on his prep for admissions test next Wed. I’m sure it’ll come at some point

DTJ · 28/10/2022 21:09

DD now has two offers for English from Exeter and York, both AAA. It's nice to have them but they're probably her 4th and 5th choices. Her O college contacted her a few days ago about submitting written work, all of this plus ELAT next week is making it feel very real suddenly! I'm very glad to have the precise dates when we will know one way or the other.

bettbburg · 28/10/2022 21:36

DS got an email from his chosen Oxford college on tuesday

PettsWoodParadise · 28/10/2022 22:11

DD’s second offer in from York, AAA. Given accommodation issues she is getting very worried as if she doesn’t get Cambridge we’d just struggle to sort out accommodation finances for Y2 & 3 given all the press so she may be pressed toward the home option if she gets a UCL offer as she could stay at home Y2 & 3 but thst seems a sad reason to choose a Uni. She’d also have an hour each way commute. I swore I would try and help my DD fight the challenges I had when I turned down top Universities as I couldn’t afford the rail fare but seems like history is repeating itself. Feeling like I am letting DD down.

Durham University students queue overnight to secure accommodation www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-63391102

Just read this, it must be so stressful for them. It has put Durham promptly to the bottom of DS’s choices.

DD in final year at Durham pays £135 pw for her room in student house this year, but next year's tenant is paying £200

I don't think any parents 'do this for' their children, do they? How would that even work?

The housing problem up in Durham can be explained by

  • 90% greedy landlords and complicit letting agencies,
  • 10% lack of housing due to the 2 CAGs related bulge years.

MidLifeCrisis007 it's more than that, it's about the underlying expansion programme of the uni which has been compounded by the CAG bulge. The available housing stock can't cope and the market is seeing rent rises because that's.... the market. The critical factor is simply that there aren't enough houses to go around; the greed of landlords is secondary. But it's true that the rent rises are the factor fuelling the early panic for less well off students but at the end of the day the issue is simply not enough rental accommodation. It's madness, having to queue overnight, never mind freshers' having to choose three of four people to share with in the first couple of weeks. It's calculated to end with a lot of tears.

HoneyMobster · 29/10/2022 09:24

@PettsWoodParadise - we also live in London and increasing numbers amongst our friendship group are opting to stay.

I think the highest number ever in our 6th form went to London unis, with a big group going to LSE. They seem to live out for year 1 and then at home for Year 2 and beyond. With the cost of accommodation and availability issues I've come round to the view it can be a good choice. And UCL is an excellent uni.

perseverence · 29/10/2022 10:18

Accomodation issues also really bad at Bristol and St. Andrews, also Bath.

Option of staying at home seems attractive in one way but re student finance I'm fairly sure they don't get the full amount if they do, so what seems like sensible in one respect may not be in another as finance helps them with independence.

Totally get the points about DDs/DSs not passing on news.

It is difficult as they are independent in one way, but not fully adults in another. Mine not 18 yet as summer born in August.

I've got a different source of panic here as DD really not well yesterday and currently doing Covid test, so actually don't know who that will be for Wednesday and the TSA. Heavens, just when you think you have surmounted one hurdle and another kind of hurdle turns up. Sigh.

Yes would go with that.
DD just mentioned it for that reason.

@riverpebbles Not sure if you're happy to start another thread, but we are nearly at the end of this one :) If not, can somene else please as I can never link things properly and this is helpful!

redtulip12 · 29/10/2022 11:56

@perseverence I hope your dd is negative and feels better by Wednesday. I have a similar worry in that my dh has just tested positive which means I am highly likely to have it or get it and I have been spending a lot of time in the car with my dd so she could also get it in the next couple of days. I don't know what that would mean for the TSA. V stressful

ofteninaspin · 29/10/2022 12:12

Durham Uni's expansion plans appear to be all about growing a business with not a thought given to the practical implications for its students. The private sector accommodation issues were surely inevitable after they rapidly built new first year accommodation. Where did they think all those extra students were going to live in their second year? Along with insufficient lecture theatre seats and library spaces for their students, Durham seems intent on ruining its reputation as a top university.

I totally understand this worry. Good luck. I am just doing what I did in lockdowns and putting everything in sight in boil wash/dishwasher no shared cups etc.

The guidance on the NHS website seems to say nowadays first few days - isolate then from day five if you have no symptoms you can attend events as normal? Have I got this wrong?

redtulip12 · 29/10/2022 13:26

@perseverence it looks
Like it is 3 days if they are under 18 according to NHS website
