Thought I would start a new thread as its likely to fill up quick now.

So here we are after many months of applications, assessments and interviews. The wait is finally over for those with DC who have applied to Oxford. Those with Cambridge applicants have another 2 weeks to wait until the 25th Jan (bummer!!)

You have all been a lovely bunch to share this journey with and I wish your dc nothing but the BEST OF LUCK for tomorrow (and the 25th). Flowers

Congrats to you all, hopefully your kids will enjoy themselves. I went to Oxford a long time ago. It was both the best and worst time of my life - so if you kid didn't get an offer, that can sometimes be a good thing too.

Whatstheweatherlike · 11/01/2022 11:52

DS has an offer!! Was so shocked I burst into tears and had to hide in a cupboard at work 😳

SandyBayley · 11/01/2022 11:53

@Whatstheweatherlike - perfectly acceptable. I had a proper sob when DS1 got his offer. With DD it was more a tear in my eye...

Notonetojudge · 11/01/2022 11:53

@Thisisconfusing wow that’s a tough one - how to celebrate appropriately? I have a friend who’s ds’s have applied for Cambridge so may be in a similar position soon…

My lovely ds has a place - so pleased for him. He’s going back to boarding school tonight so can’t take him out to celebrate, but it’s good to have him here to share the news.

HewasH2O · 11/01/2022 11:55

Whatstheweatherlike he will love it. Is it from the College he was initially interviewed by?

SandyBayley · 11/01/2022 11:55

Hurray @Notonetojudge !

We should have a roll call in a bit to catch up with everyone.

SarahAndQuack · 11/01/2022 11:55

@Balloonsandbaubles

I am a newbie to this Oxbridge business. My daughter has applied to Cambridge to do education with english and drama. Have any of you ladies on here got any experience of the course/ how competitive it is to get an offer? My daughter goes to a private school which has been good for her on many levels but maybe now has reduced her chances of an offer. I wish I’d had a crystal ball 17 years ago!
It doesn't reduce her chances. Cambridge (like lots of places) works hard to make sure students who've already been placed at a disadvantage aren't further discriminated against, but it's that way around, not the other.

(Hope that is reassuring.)

Frankl · 11/01/2022 12:02

DD4 has an offer! She refused to check her email until she had lunch with her 3 sisters.

Now 2 more weeks until we find out about DD1

DahliaMacNamara · 11/01/2022 12:02

Congratulations to DC with offers, and socially-distanced hugs to those who are disappointed today. Bright students will fly whatever their destination. It can be an overwhelming day for everyone.

ealingwestmum · 11/01/2022 12:04

Frankl, Notonetojudge, well done to your DC!

SandyBayley · 11/01/2022 12:06

Great news @Frankl - what is the subject?

Balloonsandbaubles · 11/01/2022 12:06

thank you, I hope so.

Balloonsandbaubles · 11/01/2022 12:08

That is kind of you. Yes, if Cambridge are fair this will make any result much easier to take.

Notonetojudge · 11/01/2022 12:08

@Frankl - clever girls! Are they all oxbridge?

VikingNorthUtsire · 11/01/2022 12:11

Sadly a no here. No email yet but UCAS is showing his application as no longer open. It was always a long shot for a super competitive subject.

Congratulations again to everyone who got an offer and good luck to all the students wherever they end up.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/01/2022 12:17

Congratulations to those whose DC have received offers for places and commiserations to those of you whose DC haven't been successful (but probably will be equally if not more so at other universities!).

I have often commented on other threads that of my DSibling's close friendship group (mostly Cambridge graduates), the one who has arguably done best career-wise went to Bristol. Always felt that they were more driven for not having achieved the Oxbridge 'goal'.

DN has an offer for MML Smile.

Really difficult having to deal with twins, one successful in their application and the other not.

SandyBayley · 11/01/2022 12:17

@VikingNorthUtsire - sorry to hear that. I hope he's taking it OK? Does he have offers in which he's happy with?

fishingeagle · 11/01/2022 12:27

@Balloonsandbaubles for this year and next Cambridge are ranking all applicants from the same school by their GCSE results. If she’s not at the top of that cohort and applying from a top indie for a subject without an admissions test that she can ace then even with straight A* predictions at A level it will be a big ask. My DC was in this boat thought their upward trajectory would help. It did not and they didn’t get an interview at C along with many from same school.

Mulhollandmagoo · 11/01/2022 12:28

@Whatsinaname321

I’ve been lurking on the threads but not dared post as felt I was tempting fate. My son has had an offer from Oxford this morning. I had prepared myself to deal with him not getting an offer. He applied for a competitive course with lower than average acceptance rates. I feel so relieved. We are not a family with a university background. I am the only person in the family who has been to university and I went as a mature student. My son has had an adverse childhood at times and would have been considered disadvantaged for more than one reason. He has battled mental health issues and has come out fighting and trying his best to achieve what he wants. I haven't yet told anybody other than my husband. Best of luck to everyone else.
Had a tear at this!!! Huge congratulations to your son!!

Congratulations to all of your children who have had offers today, cannot imagine how proud you must be.

@TerrifiedandWorried So sorry to hear about your DD if I remember your original post your DD gained her amazing grades against the odd. She has done amazingly and no doubt gutted not to get in but with her attitude she will thrive wherever she goes but for today Wine

Much solidarity with everyone supporting their DC today. However it goes it will be ok.

mustardpot13 · 11/01/2022 12:34

@fishingeagle - only ranking applicants in same school if there are at least 10 of them. Most schools probably wont have greater than 10 applicants.

fishingeagle · 11/01/2022 12:40

@mustardpot13 of course; but top academically selective indies will have practically the whole year group applying. I don’t have an argument with it but it is a factor to be considered if that’s your context.

JudgeJ · 11/01/2022 12:41

@SeasonFinale

DS qas an Oxford reject but had a fab gap year and is living his best life at Bristol. So if news is not good life is still out there. It can also sometimes hit parents harder than the applicants. Wishing you all good news tomorrow.
Oh, that reminds me, painfully, of the loss of a potential person I really fancied, I commented that Bristol Uni was full of Oxbridge rejects!! Me and my big mouth.
