Thought I would start a new thread as its likely to fill up quick now.

So here we are after many months of applications, assessments and interviews. The wait is finally over for those with DC who have applied to Oxford. Those with Cambridge applicants have another 2 weeks to wait until the 25th Jan (bummer!!)

You have all been a lovely bunch to share this journey with and I wish your dc nothing but the BEST OF LUCK for tomorrow (and the 25th). Flowers

@Pallando thank you - DS is at an indie, not one with a tradition of Oxbridge but they have clued us up. The others with mathmos are @cosmiccat and @genegenieee unless I missed someone. And how odd that two of us have user names inspired by the same David Bowie album!

Panicmode1 · 25/01/2022 21:47

@curlyhairedassassin I didn't know that about the grass 😁....DH and DS went up to Corpus/Cambridge one Sat and had a lovely tour and got to look at the Pepys Library which had just reopened so he was lucky. Am hoping when the offer email/letter comes, there will be an opportunity to go and visit.

I know this is just a step and they still have to get the grades, but let's hope they both do, and meet at engineering lectures in due course.

(Tho DS isn't sure how he feels right now - very sad that one of his best friends didn't get an offer, but pleased others did. He's also torn between the opportunity of going to Cambridge but a course he (slightly) prefers at Imperial....a nice dilemma to have, I know)

Storminamu · 25/01/2022 22:00

@Panicmode1 - Magdalene was one of my favourite colleges when I lived in Cambridge aeons ago and used to sneak into them. Lovely gardens, with the longest river frontage of any college. And most of the students seem to live in a nice group of buildings next to the river, just across from the main college building. There's lots of grass to sit on, and there was even a Victorian pet cemetery. Right in the centre of town, too.

Just catching up after a long day.
Congratulations to all of you with happy news and commiserations to those of you with children who will be starting their uni journeys elsewhere in September - I hope they all start to look forward to new adventures soon.
And I'm sorry @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango that your dd has heard nothing at all. That's rubbish! There are two people on TSR still saying they've heard nothing, one of whom applied to Clare (and the other to Corpus I think) - unless that's your dd then there is someone else in her shoes too. 🤞 for tomorrow.

Puffalicious · 25/01/2022 22:56

As I said a while back, I'm sure my Dnephew would be happy to talk about maths at Oxford, if your DS is considering applying next year. He managed to get a first and is now doing a PHD, so is a bit of a maths genius. Probably the earlier the better, to allow time to do any extra work to cover things that are covered in England but not Scotland. It would be great to see more Scottish students at Oxbridge. DNeph really loved his time at Oxford, but he did work very hard throughout his time there

That is so very kind, thank you. Your DN is a real life genuis! They move among us. Although I don't think DS will reapply actually. During the rugby run tonight (our tri-weekly time for a chat away from other DCGrin) he actually brought up the MAT - he's now covered the 2 topics in Adv Higher that he struggled with. I said 'You can reapply next year' and straight off the bat he said 'Nah. Timing was all wrong. My mind's set on my other choices'. Good for him. I'm joining eightytwenty and the others on the other thread. The best of luck to your DS and I hope he has the most wonderful gap year.

doubleshotcappuccino · 26/01/2022 01:49

Very sorry to see no news @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango ! Despite it being a no for I'm so pleased that Dd tried and proud of how she handled it all. Thanks @Eightytwenty for the new thread... glad we can keep in touch....

YaIz · 26/01/2022 02:43

Here’s a misleading post on Facebook. Posted 10 hours ago, so “today” was Tuesday.

“If you haven’t heard yet, the College you applied to will be in touch by email by the end of the day!”

You can even see Clare in the picture.

I hope your DD has news in the morning, @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 26/01/2022 07:08

Thank you all and no still nothing. Poor DD just woke up as she can't stop coughing and I have sat with her and checked every single folder in her phone and nothing. This was the email address they emailed her for the interview then subsequently the interview details so we know they have it. Its just bizarre and very very annoying, especially if a rejection all this stress for sweet F all! Honestly wish she had never applied Angry

HoneyMobster · 26/01/2022 07:37

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango - has she checked her UCAS account? I think DD's updated almost immediately with Oxford.

Juja · 26/01/2022 07:37

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango we all feel for you and your DD so much. Just awful for you.

Why not ring up the Admissions Office. There will be humans there. This will be cock up rather than conspiracy and they will I’m sure be mortified. I appreciate it is unacceptable - the sooner you contact them directly the better. You / your DD can give them another email address in case there has been some nonsense about it failing to get through.

Hope you get this resolved asap this morning and with the news you want! 🤞🏻
MFLMum2022 · 26/01/2022 07:44

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango, I can’t believe you still haven’t heard! What a nightmare. I was going to suggest the same as @Juja; give the admissions office a call at say 9am when they are likely to be there. It must be an admin mess-up somewhere.

quest1on2 · 26/01/2022 07:54

I’m so sorry you and DD are still in this limbo Tango. Yes, I guess admin mistakes can happen anywhere, but this is hardly a good look for Clare College, is it? All I can think of us perhaps a large proportion of the staff came down with Covid over the weekend? God knows? But still, it’s totally unacceptable. As we all know, your mind goes through various scenarios before and during offer day - but not hearing at all is not one of thise scenarios. I would call them at 9am for sure. Fingers crossed for you Xx

Pallando · 26/01/2022 08:13

@ladygrinningsoul - there are loads of resources available on maths.org/step/ which are freely available to everyone, I would suggest starting with the STEP 2 modules at this stage, but if your DS has not seen any STEP questions before than maybe working through some of the Foundation modules first might be an idea (perhaps just the STEP question from each?).

The STEP 2 and STEP 3 modules each have "topic notes", so you can still attempt the questions even if there are some topics you haven't yet met at school.

You can also follow "stepsupportcam" on twitter where you will get updates (especially on things like when registration opens for STEP etc).

Any questions please do ask!

Pallando · 26/01/2022 08:20

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango - it's the colleges that send out the offers (and they then let the admissions office know), so I would start by contacting Clare (possibly on [email protected]?).

www.cao.cam.ac.uk/ CAO do have a telephone number, so if you cannot get through to Clare then maybe phone them up and ask for advice?

Pallando · 26/01/2022 08:22

@Juja well done! I was trying to find a relevant phone number for Clare, and couldn't

gingertom · 26/01/2022 08:35

Pallando is right - the Clare admissions email is [email protected]

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 26/01/2022 08:40

Thanks yes DD emailed them last night on that email address - hoping she gets a swift response this morning. It is Dd on TSR but the only other ones who hadn't heard gave now had their offers. It's shit!!

It seems to take a few days for Cambridge.

quest1on2 · 26/01/2022 09:15

Yes it said UCAS doesn’t update until 27th for Cambridge.

cosmiccat · 26/01/2022 09:21

@Pallando

Hi everyone! If anyone has a Cambridge offer involving STEP (which might include some non-mathmos) then please do check out maths.org/step.

Under "support for teachers" there is a recorded webinar about STEP which might be useful, and I am happy to answer any questions Smile.

All UK State school offer holders for STEP will get an invite to a series of webinars - I will post on here when the invites go through (for some reason it take 2-3 weeks after offers).

Thank you @pallando that is handy to know and will keep an eye out. DD is at a large state 6th form who seem very switched on about STEP and the support she has been receiving has been amazing. She has been having weekly STEP lessons since interviews were over and is doing a Saturday fortnightly online class. So I'm hoping she will be in a good place. Ironically she could/should now place more focus on STEP than 1 of her A levels - she is doing 4. One of her concerns if she hadn't received an offer was that she wouldn't be able to continue her STEP classes as she enjoyed tackling the questions!

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango thinking of you and your DD. I hope you get a swift and grovelling response with good news. It is unacceptable to put you both through this.
ealingwestmum · 26/01/2022 09:26

I can’t imagine how your DD is coping with this nightmare Tango. So hope it ends well.
