Thought I would start a new thread as its likely to fill up quick now.

So here we are after many months of applications, assessments and interviews. The wait is finally over for those with DC who have applied to Oxford. Those with Cambridge applicants have another 2 weeks to wait until the 25th Jan (bummer!!)

You have all been a lovely bunch to share this journey with and I wish your dc nothing but the BEST OF LUCK for tomorrow (and the 25th). Flowers

@CurlyhairedAssassin - he's not really sure.....he's still not sure which one he will firm because he really loved Corpus, and he really really likes the Imperial course.

I guess he will wait until he gets the actual offer - he just had a letter /email saying that they fished him out and he should be very pleased because it was a super competitive year, particularly for STEM subjects, but they will send a more detailed offer in a few days. He hasn't visited the college and doesn't really know much about it, so will have a think. It's not a bad position to be in really!

Remind me which colleges your DS was heading to? @kitnkaboodle how about you - I can't remember, sorry.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/01/2022 19:25

@quest1on2

Tango - I have never heard of such a thing!

DS didn’t hear until 2pm ish today and I was shattered at that point. Last year (when he was rejected) it pinged early - about 9am I think.

What college are you waiting for? There is TSR you could maybe look on to see if anyone else is still hanging? Absolutely ridiculous and I can’t see any need to do this to people. As if these kids don’t have enough on (and the mums)!

I know it's been a long day! It's Clare college. She's been on TSR and yes it seems some still haven't heard either but nothing much about Clare. It's really unfair on them after all they've put themselves through still I'm trying to think it maybe due to staff shortages. They should have put out a blanket email this morning though if that was the case to save all this stress.

Tbh perhaps next thread could be just called something else?? I know there's a separate Unis thread but I would love to know how all these amazing candidates get on wherever it is. But would understand anyone needing a break or a different forum.

Horace123 · 25/01/2022 19:49

Just popped on to check your news @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. Can’t believe poor DD still hasn’t heard. FFS.

I would be livid and composing all sorts of cutting emails in my head in which I threaten to go to the press - undecided whether the headline would be along the lines of “Top university leaves candidates hanging - teenagers tell of damage to their mental health” OR “Social media star tells of daughter’s distress after Cambridge forget to send email”. Don’t think “social media star” is pushing it - I mean you’ve got your own thread with followers and everything.

I’m so sorry you and DD are going through this. Let’s hope she hears soon and then we can forgive the college when it’s good news.

Geamhradh · 25/01/2022 19:51

I'd like to keep on chatting, wherever our kids end up!
@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango, I'd given up on DD for today as well once it got past 6pm. Can't believe you've heard nothing though, what a 'mare. Wine

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/01/2022 19:52

@Horace123 Grin Grin Grin

I LOVE IT! Social media star Star I should DEMAND my DD be let in just for the head fuck trauma they have inflicted on her. They should also be funding my botox given the lines i have gained today and not to mention the numerous biscuits I have consumed!!!!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/01/2022 19:53

@PermanentTemporary Yes I would love to be part of that so we can keep in touch. I am hoping DD will know before this thread fills up!

Popping on to hear all your news. Heartfelt congratulations to all those with offers! Storminamu 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 on Burn's Day too! Is your DS S5 or S6? Good for him taking a year out. What's he planning to do? DS is still thinking about whether he'll take one.

Commiserations to those who didn't get the news they would have liked. It'so very hard. Be kind to yourselves (I was more upset than DS about his rejection from O).Piggywaspushed so sad to hear your news, I was rooting for you.

Needmoresleep · 25/01/2022 19:58

And word of warning. Those waiting for the likes of Durham and LSE will probably be waiting into March which can make the O/C rejection even harder. DS had to wait till March for Warwick, UCL and LSE, whist studying for his A levels. In the end it was two further rejections and one acceptance, and all you need is one. But grim all the same.

I suggest a support thread as opposed to the general university thread.

Oh and DS was offered an Oxford place for his masters, whilst his cousin went on to Cambridge, after being rejected at UG, to study for his PhD. We are very lucky in the UK to have a number of very good Universities.

HewasH2O · 25/01/2022 19:58

Has she checked UCAS? I don't know how quickly that updates.

Puffalicious · 25/01/2022 20:08

@Eightytwenty

Right fellow rejects - where are we going to post now? Where have the Oxford lot ended up? Be nice to carry on the chat - we’re all nicely vested in our DC’s futures so be good to know where they end up.

To those who were successful- I might be popping back to hear your news.

Right eightytwenty, you starting a spanking, new thread? Wink

Congratulations to everyone with offers today and commiserations to those who missed out. All the students I know who ended up at other places utterly thrived.

If anyone with a maths offer wants to chat to a parent with a dc at C, I'm happy to chat by dm. If you havent discovered the STEP support program maths.org/step/welcome
If you are a state school applicant, then in the past there has been a state school offer holders day at some point. I don't know what the status is with covid but @pallandro has been very helpful in the past in letting people know about it

Oh, @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango I can't believe it's gone on so long for you. The irony of you being the whole reason we're here!

So sorry to hear of all the lovely teens who didn't get the news they wanted today. I hope it turns out to be the start of a better thing for them all.

I haven't contributed a lot, but it's been lovely to be a very small part of this thread. Just knowing there were others out there going through the same stresses was such a help when was nobody irl to talk to about it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2022 20:23

doh it's @pallando no 'r'

RubyDarke · 25/01/2022 20:27

Have been lurking for weeks because DC2 was very unsure about whole process but got an offer today and is thrilled.

I went through it all several years ago with DC1 (who has now graduated) so under no illusions - the hard work is still to come.

DC1 thrived there as a state school (bog standard comp) student - found lots of friends and enjoyed lots of extra curriculars. Hoping it will be the same for DC2 and history will repeat itself but if not, there are other brilliant options available.

Mind you, if I were a drinking woman I'd hit the gin tonight in sheer bloody relief that another hurdle has been jumped.

Good luck to anyone who's supporting their DC combing UCAS tonight for final applications. It makes me look fondly back at the old days of filling in a paper form by hand. We had next to no information and still managed somehow...

Stockpot · 25/01/2022 20:27

I’m hanging onto this thread till we know @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango ‘s results! It seems so unfair.

kitnkaboodle · 25/01/2022 20:32

Settling down to a quiet evening after one of the most emotionally turbulent days I've known.
@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango - not to hear on THE day is terrible. And you've been a stalwart on this thread. This is a wild card, but do you think there's any chance your DD got a rejection and can't tell you??
@Panicmode1 @CurlyhairedAssassin I don't think I'm ready to name DS2's offer college right now, but I can let you know that it sounds hilarious when you say 'He was fished out of the pool by xxx'! It's old and Hogwarty. We're reeling. Congrats to the successful engineers. So difficult to choose between Cambridge and Imperial, @Panicmode1, but what a lovely problem.
@Skerryberry - hi! How lovely to hear from you. You remember DS1 so well! As of this morning he hadn't added his other 4 choices. Why would he yet?! 😬 Gonna be Imperial (a very long shot), Bristol (fingers crossed for that as more realistic), Bath (made him an offer last year he accepted then declined) and A N Other mystery one. Tune in tomorrow- deadline day. Sorry for brief thread hijack. @skerryberry and I are old pals from the very select and very stressful October 2020 A level resits thread 😱😱

Thanks Puffalicious. DC is in S6, which is challenging enough, I think! I suspect that being younger than all the other candidates (almost certainly) at least made making an impression easy. DC wants to spend time abroad in several different countries, Covid permitting. As I said a while back, I'm sure my Dnephew would be happy to talk about maths at Oxford, if your DS is considering applying next year. He managed to get a first and is now doing a PHD, so is a bit of a maths genius. Probably the earlier the better, to allow time to do any extra work to cover things that are covered in England but not Scotland. It would be great to see more Scottish students at Oxbridge. DNeph really loved his time at Oxford, but he did work very hard throughout his time there.
fishingeagle · 25/01/2022 20:56

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango thinking of you and your DD. Clearly someone at Clare has messed up, not on purpose I'm sure but that must be scant consolation. Really hope you get good news. Many congratulations to DC with offers, and certain that other wonderful places await those DC who missed out.

Pallando · 25/01/2022 21:04

Hi everyone! If anyone has a Cambridge offer involving STEP (which might include some non-mathmos) then please do check out maths.org/step.

Under "support for teachers" there is a recorded webinar about STEP which might be useful, and I am happy to answer any questions Smile.

All UK State school offer holders for STEP will get an invite to a series of webinars - I will post on here when the invites go through (for some reason it take 2-3 weeks after offers).

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/01/2022 21:26

@kitnkaboodle No not a chance DD wears her heart on her sleeve like me and she would either be in floods of tears or jumping for joy, she actually took the afternoon off college as she could not concentrate so sat we me all day.

DD has just sent off an email to admissions at Clare so hopefully hear tomorrow. Yes not to hear on THE day with everybody else is a bummer - a rejection would have been better than this. Ah well another restless night ahead Shock

Well I can't quite bring myself to use the phrase "he is heading to" yet, but he has an offer for engineering at Churchill. He is thrilled to bits as a couple of his friends got offers from there too.

We looked around Corpus Christi I think when we visited in August. Well, as much as visitors can (which didn't seem to be a lot!). I thought it was very pretty, but DS wasn't impressed by the fact you can't sit on the grass. That was one of the draws of Churchill in his eyes, more open space were you can sit and lounge. I think he would have been happy to go to any alternative college though.
