Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

Mine never never checks his emails. I have his password. Sad but true.

Framey did those components test very different things? We have a similar thing with Spanish : B,C and U. But in our case we know why he got the U. We have still put in for a remark, that said, in case some kindly examiner decided giving him 14 marks was a bit mean....

Shimy · 02/09/2019 19:59

I went into B & M today (had no idea such treasure lay at the bottom of my street!) thanks to this thread. I got the most gorgeous photo frame or £2.99 to the family photo i just got developed for DS a asurprise for his desk. Really pleased it’s that. To think I nearly went to TKMaxx to spend close to £15.99.

MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 20:12

@shimy not just me then - I made a little collage from when he was 4 - we were playing with a camera phone (I worked at Nokia) and took a ton of silly photos with him gurning for the camera, hands in front of my face etc. Printed it out and slipped it into his bag

Jo4Laurie · 02/09/2019 20:28

@PhannyMcNee I am quite impressed by your DD cooking a roast at all! I am thinking of buying a student cookbook for mine as I think her current repertoire is a bit 'basic' but many seem overly sophisticated (what student makes French onion soup?). Re accommodation normal to have a wobble as all part of apprehension about leaving home... mine was really upset about the not great University hall at Cardiff but I think now realises they are all in the same boat... But I will be relieved when she is in and settled!

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 20:37

for durham peeps...definitely get them to check their dept pages, ds2 is physics and he has workbooks to do, maths to brush up on and needs to have done some coding and be proficient at excel before he gets there..he's relieved he did FM at A level as well @MrKlaw ..

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 20:38

also is there no-one on here with Dc going to Loughborough this year?

mum2eim · 02/09/2019 20:44

@Ingles2 yes my DD going to Durham and she said something about a maths workbook to do. (She's doing natural sciences). She's still not back from working away so I've no idea how much she has done or checked on her own. I think (hope?) the important stuff has been done. I've been compiling a list from this thread so hopefully can hit the ground running when she gets back. That's my plan anyway! I can live in hope!

calculatorqueen · 02/09/2019 20:58

@Ingles2 my son is off to Loughborough living in Telford Hall.

We're still waiting for the teacher to look over his physics papers to decide which to remark. Hopefully we'll hear back tomorrow, now that most teachers are back. There doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency!

Shimy · 02/09/2019 21:05

@Jo4Laurie You’re off to Cardiff too? DS is going as well. So that makes 3 of us including @PhannyMcNee Smile.

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 21:07

Yay hello @calculatorqueen Smile ds1 is in William Morris.. right next door to the SU! What’s your dad studying? Ds1 is Economics but he’s much more interested in the sport on offer ..

calculatorqueen · 02/09/2019 21:14

@Ingles2 he's going to do Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He's hoping to try for the cricket teams but I think it will be very competitive. The SU looks amazing and lots going on at Freshers Fortnight. I'm quite jealous!

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 21:18

@mumtoeim just a heads up, and it may well be different for Nat sci, according to the physics dept email, the work should take them a couple of hours a day, for a couple of weeks

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 21:20

I’m jealous too..I wish I was going,.. so many fantastic things to get involved in Smile

JennyWreny · 02/09/2019 22:07

Good news - we had a trial run at fitting everything in the car and it fits!!!
Bad news - there's no room for me!!!

I'm going to go by train and meet DH and DD there, will be plenty of room without having to use the back seats. I did think about seeing if someone had a roof box we could borrow (good idea from Benjispruce though) but actually one way train tickets with my Railcard are very cheap if in advance and not in peak times. I'm going to go up early and have a mooch around before they get there!

scarecrowhead · 02/09/2019 22:09

Ds is chatting on all the fresher's groups for his uni (Lancaster). I'm very jealous, such an exciting time

pasanda · 02/09/2019 22:26

DS is going to Loughborough....but not until next year. I am following this thread with interest tho. So many things to think about! I've started writing a list already for next year! Blush

He is currently away interailing but has a gold envelope from l'boro sat on his desk waiting for his return. I am sooo tempted to open it! Grin. Any other l'boro parents know what it might be?

I am hoping he doesn't have to do anything 'official ' this year as I'm not sure he'll be checking his emails much whilst in Budapest!!

BringOnTheScience · 02/09/2019 22:27

Car packing - we've got to fit in the bass guitar & speaker cabinet!!!

We're using vacuum bags for the bedding & clothing. Plenty of choice online - do read the reviews for which ones are decent quality.

Kitchen stuff is harder to shrink down, but careful packing of small utensils into gaps should keep the space to a minimum.

Witchend · 02/09/2019 22:38

@FrameyMcFrame can you ask to see the papers before you make a choice. Edexcel send all papers to the teachers, and I think the other boards usually will if you request them.

@mum2eim dd1's going to Durham to do maths, she was saying something about a maths workbook too. I think in the first year they share a lot of modules, at any rate she was saying her friend doing natsci is doing almost the same as her.

mum2eim · 02/09/2019 22:39

@Ingles2 eek thank you. I’m hoping she knows. She did tell me on the phone when I was talking about important stuff like towels and duvets that she had maths to do. She can do that on the days I’m at work. She’s full time at home from Wednesday so should have plenty of time. She’s doing maths and physics modules for her Nat sci. I wonder if she will be in the same lectures as your DS?

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 02/09/2019 22:42

We’ve decided to hire a car as there is no way Dd and her stuff will fit in my mini☹️

mum2eim · 02/09/2019 22:45

Wouldn’t it be funny if @Witchend @Ingles2 and my DCs were all sat in the same lecture not knowing each other or that we’ve been chatting on here. My DD rolls her eyes at me when I say I’ve found stuff out here! She thinks I’m mad!

Witchend · 02/09/2019 23:22
Grin My DD rolls her eyes at me when I say I’ve found stuff out here! She thinks I’m mad!

I think dd thinks we're a little bit mad and terribly innocent of the reality.
Did you (or do you want to) say which college she's at? Dd is at Butlers.

InterdimensionalHoleOfPancakes · 02/09/2019 23:31

Hi everyone, I've just found this thread. DD1 is off to Chichester to do musical theatre in two weeks so it's all getting a bit real now! She just turned 18 last week and she leaves on the 21st so it suddenly seems too fast and I'm definitely not ready to let her go! She is so ready though and can't wait to get going, not that that's helped her to speed up her preparations at all 😂

mum2eim · 02/09/2019 23:42

@Witchend my DD is going to St Johns and no idea what type of room she will be in. I’m excited to have her home tomorrow. I’ve missed her over the summer but maybe it’s been a good weaning process for us all.

Witchend · 02/09/2019 23:47

@mum2eim
Butlers is all self catered, I think all 6 rooms to a flat with one kitchen.
She's my first going, and it feels a big step. I suspect by #3 it will not feel as big (although he says he's never going away from me, I suspect he'll change his mind!).
