Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

My former employer's annual conferences were always held in university facilities and used on-site accommodation. I have stayed at Churchill College Cambridge, Warwick, Nottingham and York, amongst other places - apart from Cambridge, all with en suite rooms, as far as I recall. Although we once had to use intetcollegiate halls in Bloomsbury to accommodate delegates for a two day training session at our base and they mostly whined about it, long and loud. Given that it was - for them - free, I had no sympathy.

MrKlaw · 04/09/2019 17:05

@JennyWreny Yes. Could have had a bigger discount from edustore.co.uk (approved reseller) but wanted the two week returns policy just in case (he's used a week of it already still in the box)

undecided whether to sell the headphones or keep them.

LIZS · 04/09/2019 17:09

Ds uni hosted conferences and language summer schools, as well as the odd movie/tv using the site, offering ensuite rooms and catering. In London, Cambridge and other cities you can individually rent rooms during vacations.

JennyWreny · 04/09/2019 17:13

@MrKlaw - those headphones selling quite well on eBay Smile

Ragwort · 04/09/2019 17:14

I stayed in university accommodation in London for the 2012 Olympics, it was great, very central and reasonably priced.

My DF (nearly 90 Grin) also loves staying in his old uni accommodation, (he went to LSE) he says it allows him to re-live his youth!

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/09/2019 17:44

So we had a trip to Dunelm today for bedding & bought the obligatory grey. Now I find it's mostly white on the other side, which I didn't think of. Perhaps I'll send him with some colour catchers for when he washes them with his new black sweatshirt.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2019 18:22

If you send colour catchers, send one of those laundry bags to put it in. I've had to hook one out of the filter on my washing machine and I vaguely remember someone saying on "this" thread two years ago that some universities don't like students using them for this reason

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/09/2019 18:39

Thanks for the tip, ordered a couple on eBay.

FrameyMcFrame · 04/09/2019 19:15

Thanks for the idea of colour catcher. Just ordered! Smile

Thanks for the advice re. DDs remark, she hasn't decided what to do yet.

Tbh she has been so down about her accommodation at York she hasn't been able to look forward to much.

But today she had a message from someone trying to swap rooms with her and offering her £50!!!

So she's slowly realising that she might actually have quite a good room, even though it's not en-suite

MrsBartlet · 04/09/2019 19:19

I already have colour catchers and a laundry bag in ds's stash of stuff to take. Very glad he won't be the only one!

Benjispruce · 04/09/2019 19:34

Ok people, was just a tongue in cheek comment. You know , light hearted? I am aware rooms get rented out, they just don’t appeal to me as an alternative to a hotel is what I was getting at.
Anyway, back to the thread. I’m back at work today and DD away for a week. All important things done so will just trundle in picking up extra toiletries etc to see her through as I’m not allowed to choose decor! She did say to me that ‘nobody at uni uses clothes horses you know!’ Is she right? Please let me be right !

LIZS · 04/09/2019 20:26

Everyone has a clothes horse - tumble drying costs.

Benjispruce · 04/09/2019 20:32

Good. She’d read some list of things people take to uni but don’t use.

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/09/2019 20:44

Every car you see on the motorway for the next few weeks will have a clothes airer stuffe din the back of it. When DS1 started and we went over the road to Asda to do a shop for him, they had a big display of them by the door!

AWanderingMinstrel · 04/09/2019 21:02

Just caught up on the thread. Can hardly believe he's off in 3 weeks. Was getting a bit worried as his uni (Imperial) did not send out accommodation offers until this week. But he has got his first choice- just trying to work out the logistics of parking car in South Kensington and unpacking the car Grin and am drinking some Wine to recover from the cost of the accommodation!
Have already got 2 DC at uni and would just like to add a couple of items to the list (although I may have missed them in another post and in the rush to catch up):
coat hangers
sleeping bag (for visitors or if they go away on a trip)
extension lead with multiple sockets
router (to boost wifi signal)
ethernet cable
air fryer (the range and very cheap)
something smart (they might have a ball or dinner)

Can you tell I have a gaming DS?

TheFallenMadonna · 04/09/2019 22:53

Ooh, which hall at Imperial? I was in Fisher and DH was in Beit.

Which sounds a bit like the shipping forecast...

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/09/2019 06:32

I bet the Imperial halls are in a fantastic location - presumably South Ken?

ProfessorLayton1 · 05/09/2019 06:38

@wanderingminstrel - This is my eldest Dd so a bit of novice.
She is in catered accommodation and can anticipate her missing meals as the dinner timings are way to early.
Would she be allowed to use air fryer in the halls and what do they have usually use it for ?

Benjispruce · 05/09/2019 07:20

I think so 😱.prof I got one from Wilko for £9!!

Benjispruce · 05/09/2019 07:21

Not sure what that emoji is doing in there. Sausage fingers!

Benjispruce · 05/09/2019 07:21

Referring to clothes horse not air fryer.

ProfessorLayton1 · 05/09/2019 07:29

Thanks for the information Benji.. luckily we have a Wilko near us.
Just used the amazon link to make sure that I have the right sort of idea..

Manontry · 05/09/2019 07:35

I have dithered over the clothes airer as I read that some unis don't allow them? Then I realised that dd is going to Wales and will probably get heavily rained on and will need somewhere to dry wet clothes even if she uses the tumble dryer for laundry!

Manontry · 05/09/2019 07:44

sleeping bag (for visitors or if they go away on a trip)

Brilliant. Thank you. Dd is definitely going on some sort of outward bound course
