Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

@pasanda don’t worry, it’s just a golden ticket congratulations card 😊
@Witchend @mum2eim I’m pretty sure they will all be in the same maths lectures 😬 have your dc chosen modules yet? Ds1 has 2 physics, 2 maths then a free choice and he’s chosen “ reading philosophy! “ 😮😮😁 he did history a A level so should be ok interpreting Satre, but he could have chose Mandarin which he did at gcse, or more history.. I think he’s becoming an existential physicist! 🤣

MrKlaw · 03/09/2019 07:37

Anyone going to Bath had registration info, reading list or subject timetables yet? They seem a bit late in the day

Chillywhippet · 03/09/2019 07:47

I’m sure lots of people have seen this but thought I’d post it if anyone is new to the thread and new to this getting ready malarkey

@Ingles2 I admire your DS for choosing a philosophy module. DD had to do some basic philosophy over the summer for RE. All that talk of existentialism, nihilism, naturalism and the like sent my brain into free-fall.

@JennyWren (are you named after the character in Our Mutual Friend? My favourite Dickens novel by far!), sorry you don't fit in the car. How long will your train journey be?

There will definitely be some of the UEA MN DC student posse sitting in the same lecture halls, as there at least three doing geography!

I am off to investigate where the nearest B&M store is, as I feel we're missing out on bargains to be had!

I have asked DS to keep checking his emails... I dont think he has any "work" to do but does have reading, but as he's working long shifts/seeing friends, I don't think he's doing anything about it Confused

LillianGish · 03/09/2019 08:08

My dd is off to Cardiff too @Shimy

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 03/09/2019 08:13

@frameyMcFrame which module was it ? Because the coursework module very often has very low grades compared to the other marks. It's so subjective and neither students or teachers seem to know exactly what the examiners are really looking for.

Unescorted · 03/09/2019 08:25

Can I ask you to remind your DD & DS to register to vote.

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

If they don't yet have a term time address they can register at their home address and set up a proxy or postal vote.

Best wishes to all of them btw - it is such an exciting time of their lives.

Shimy · 03/09/2019 08:37

@InterdimensionalHoleOfPancakes Hello and welcome. Lovely to see you. Exciting times ahead!

@LillianGish 🙂 great to see another Cardiff miner. Are you all prepared, enrolled etc? DS not remotely acting like he’s leaving for uni, still looking quite perturbed by pots and pans, cutlery etc. Are you coming from far? We have 3 hr drive.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 03/09/2019 08:43

We filled in DDs postal vote form last week. 😊

MrKlaw · 03/09/2019 08:46

We live in Windsor, DS is going to Bath. I'll get him to register but he'll be spitting into the wind at the moment :( Still, good to get into the habit

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/09/2019 08:54

I think for UEA bound students, they could tick a box on the SU website for the the latter to register them via Norwich Coucil - took the pain out of the process.

@pasanda It's a Willy Wonka style golden ticket from Loughborough congratulating them on their place. A bit gimmicky but still quite a nice idea.

Benjispruce · 03/09/2019 09:32

I ordered those huge zip up tartan bags from Amazon. 5 extra large ones. I think one will fit in all the bedding incl duvet and pillow, leaving 4 for towels and clothing so hoping won’t need a suitcase. Will put other stuff into storage boxes we have. DD has applied for HSBC account and sending GP reg today as she’s off to Berlin tomorrow. Still not heard about Biology remark and thought we would as her school had a training day yesterday. I’ll be chasing that up while she’s away. Really wish she hadn’t planned a trip this late but obviously it was cheaper in September. As far as I know she doesn’t have any work to do for her course.

Atreus · 03/09/2019 10:10

@MrKlaw my DD is off to Bath. She told me she'd received some registration stuff via email last night. She's annoyingly self-sufficient though and so said she sorted it all out herself without needing my help. So no idea what it actually involved! No info about moving in times yet though...I did get that much from her

ifonly4 · 03/09/2019 10:23

frameyMcFrame There were three elements to DD's music exam, performance, composition and written paper. The written paper is a fast moving paper, and essay question this year for DD's board a bit different, either way it was that that bought A*/A down to an overall high B.

JennyWreny · 03/09/2019 10:27

New I'm not really sure where my username comes from, but I haven't read that Dickens so not there! My train journey will only be 2.5 hours which will seem very short compared to the 53 hour one we did across the US in the summer! It will take them over 3 hours in the car so I'll be a bit ahead of them and have time for some shopping.

I'm hoping there may be space to store DDs suitcase in her room (cupboard behind the headboard, in the underbed storage, top of the wardrobe maybe) because she'll need something to bring her washing clothes home in on the train.

@DrMadelineMaxwell glad your DD's modules were sorted out for her.

@BringOnTheScience I like the idea of the vacuum bags but have never used them before. Is there a brand you would recommend?

icanbewhatiwant · 03/09/2019 10:34

@JennyWreny I have found the Lakeland vacuum bags the best (also available from amazon) I have tried several other cheaper brands and find the air comes out again over a few days. Maybe I've just been unlucky...

JennyWreny · 03/09/2019 10:40

Thanks @icanbewhatiwant

Sorry, completely off topic but do you think if I stored duvet and pillows in them for a long period they would retain their fluffiness.

GoldenRuby · 03/09/2019 10:57

@Benjispruce we are using those tartan bags to, but also one soft sided large hold-all for clothes, in case he comes home for Christmas by train and needs to cart half his wardrobe home with him. It can live under his bed the rest of the time.

Benjispruce · 03/09/2019 10:59

Good idea Golden

icanbewhatiwant · 03/09/2019 11:14

@JennyWreny I store the winter duvets in them during the summer (and vice versa) I think they fluff up ok. Not tried pillows though.

LillianGish · 03/09/2019 11:15

@Shimy we are coming from Paris so will travel over for the weekend with her. She is also very laid about about preparations - hasn't enrolled yet (told me they email you two weeks before to tell you to do this), she was enthusiastically choosing some modules for her course yesterday, but has gone off to the Sorbonne this morning with a friend who is enrolling there (fascinated by other people's preparations - less focussed on here own. I am trying not to nag).

MrKlaw · 03/09/2019 11:26

@GoldenRuby good call on holdall. We have one but weren't taking it - hadn't considered how he'd come back :D

Shimy · 03/09/2019 11:28

@Lillian definitely much further than us Grin, in England.About the enrolment, it does say to expect an email 3 weeks before resumption, but DS went onto enrolment via the uni website and managed to enrol and has got a parking permit for when we arrive to drop him off! So I’m really not sure if the ’email’ will offer anything differEnt but we’ll see.
