Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

DD1 turned her nose up at my uni cutlery (well, it is pretty revolting, with brown plastic handles) so we will be off to Ikea later in the week to kit madam out with something more appropriate.

One thing I will NOT need to buy is a single duvet. I did a stock-check recently, and found ELEVEN of them around the house (three DCs, bunk beds, sleepovers etc. etc.). I did throw out some of the more scabby specimens, but she will be well catered for.

MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 13:08

Bath supply bedding so thats a big space saver for us. They also have two trips to IKEA as part of freshers week :)

Actually looking at the freshers week online, there are the usual club nights every night which need a wristband, but most things seem fairly quiet and are free - and there aren't any Sports events listed which I'm sure will add a lot to the events.

Do the student uni bars normally have BT/Sky sports? My DS can watch BT sport through the Virgin app but not sky.

RedHelenB · 02/09/2019 14:18

Just sorted out to put in for dd2s history remark. Tbh the cost almost put me off but I promised that as she'd put in the work I would do. Am sure it won't ever make a difference to anything but she felt quite sure she'd done well in that paper. Tine will tell u suppose!

ifonly4 · 02/09/2019 14:23

MrKlaw I third contining with a Students of 2019 thread. It'd be good to keep in touch with everyone on here and also know how all our DCs are doing.

Well, we set off for Scotland on Thursday. As predicted DD hasn't started packing and will do it all last minute. We're going up in a motorhome, so I'm starting to put a few things aside foodwise. Not looking forward to driving a large vehicle but it'll save money (verses train&accommodation) and at least we can relax properly each afternoon/evening. Driving up over two days and the same again returning.

icanbewhatiwant · 02/09/2019 14:48

@CointreauVersial I looked through our duvets too. I found 4 not being used. But all 15tog. I thought that may be too hot. So I've had to order a lighter one.
Those Aldi duvet sets look great. Damn that I just bought £15 ones from next.

Ginfordinner · 02/09/2019 15:11

DD has just been sent her timetable. It is very full on. She only has about 3 full days free. It is a science degree.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2019 15:29

Unfortunately, DS's History paper didn't go up or down on remark. Good luck with your DD's one @RedHelenB.

@Ginfordinner is that for the whole term? DS's is now available and he appears to have about 12 hours worth of lectures/labs/tuition a week. They're spread right across it, with the odd 5pm one and tutorials on a Monday morning and Friday afternoon too (not ideal if he wants to come home/go to see friends for the weekend).

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 02/09/2019 15:36

Three free days during the whole term

Ingles2 · 02/09/2019 15:49

well you guys were totally right about Ikea... I've never seen so many freshers and their parents stocking up on cutlery, and bedding... Grin I thought I had most of it covered, but having both boys going to uni, I still managed to spend £211!! and that didn't include meatballs sadly, we ended up at lakeside having kfc as ds2 spent far too long wittering about his dinner suit. So that's it, I think we're just about done on the buying. Ds1 has been given his 30 min drop off slot at l'boro... seems quite happy with the idea that we'll take him for a food shop, then leave him to get on with it...
ds2 @durham Hild Bede doesn't seem to have time slot... anytime after lunch and the also have afternoon tea for parents! Smile thank god as that's a 6.30 hour drive..
has everyone had to buy books? ds2 has 2.. once of which was £52.. he went for a £40 second hand option and another which has just arrived.. .a slim paperback on measurements and their uncertainties £18!.. blimey

mimiasovitch · 02/09/2019 15:56

@Ginfordinner I'm not sure about over the year, but the first two terms are 9-5 every day! That's more than I work Confused

puppypower1 · 02/09/2019 16:22

Mr Klaw - Bath uni SU show all and any sport going on regardless of channel I believe. I think it's quieter during exam time!

bengalcat · 02/09/2019 16:26

Had to smile in Waitrose yesterday as mothers were shopping with their teens choosing essential herbs to cook with .

BringOnTheScience · 02/09/2019 16:30

B&M and Dunelm shop done. Thank goodness for 10% off for students and that Granny is helping towards paying for it Shock

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2019 16:31

Not aware that DS has been given a reading list yet (but that doesn't mean he hasn't!). Will check.

OP posts:
MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 17:00

Not seen a reading list or timetable yet. There is a 'freshers week' math department thing with a few intro sessions but nothing proper. The only links I can find seem to suggest timetables will not be available until 13 Sep which is only a week before they're all headed off there so not much time to get your head around things (although they have the extra freshers week too). Certainly not much time if they don't get a reading list until then.

DS is lucky that he did FM at A level as that does soften the 'on ramp' to degree maths apparantly. But I would like to get a feel for what his timetable will look like

pontiouspilates · 02/09/2019 17:01

DD has a summer reading list, has purchased some books, which hopefully work by osmosis as she doesn't seem to have read any of them.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2019 17:34

@pontiouspilates that made me laugh Grin.

OP posts:
RedHelenB · 02/09/2019 17:43

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Thanks for the good wishes. I think shes talked herself into thinking it wont change but it is her stronger paper usually
Shes st a friends for tea now so it is very quiet with dd1 back at uni and ds in his room. Better get used to it I suppose!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/09/2019 18:14

Hurrah for Dd still sending in her ranking of preference of topics for studying this year despite passing the deadline.
Email today apologising if the late letter arriving caused any stress and assurance that they have sorted out her units for her.

blametheparents · 02/09/2019 18:33

Well, today DS has learnt how to clean the bathroom! Obviously I expect this skill to be put to good use cleaning his en-suite bathroom every week. Who am I kidding? Today was likely the first and last time he will clean a bathroom for the next year at least!

@BringOnTheScience - Glad to hear your DC has been earning some cash over the long summer. I really do feel that the IB summer is quite long enough though and I am now ready for DS to start his new adventure.

DS logged onto his university portal today to pay his accommodation deposit and first instalment (as requested by the uni) and the Account Details page states that he paid it back in August! He definitely didn't! I used to get annoyed with ParentPay, but it was a dream compared to this system!

TheFallenMadonna · 02/09/2019 18:44

My DS's history paper did go up by 4 on review, so he has gone up a grade (he was 1 below), and is v happy. Fingers crossed for your DD RedHelenB.
We are in gap year limbo post results. University place confirmed, but no preparation until this time next year. I am taking notes from the thread...!

Decorhate · 02/09/2019 19:11

Ds is still incapable of checking his emails without prompting from me Hmm Of course there was one there for him today to do his online registration

FrameyMcFrame · 02/09/2019 19:18

Decorhate, dd is the same.

I've resorted to bribery... check your emails or no allowance etc.

FrameyMcFrame · 02/09/2019 19:25

I don't know what to do about DD's music mark and whether to push for a re-mark.

School have advised against it as she is a long way from the next grade up. But when we looked at the marks breakdown it seemed really bizarre.

She got A*, C and E in the 3 sections.

I just have a nagging feeling something isn't right.
