'flipping' organs!!

chelseamorning · 01/01/2010 19:29

Now you're probably thinking I'm off my rocker here but bear with me!

My DS is 3. Since I gave birth, I sometimes get a weird sensation in my chest/stomach which when I bend right over. The only way to describe it is that it feels like an organ or something is 'flipping'. It takes my breath away and I have to stand up carefully. Then I feel it 'flip' back into place. Usually there are no other after effects. Sometimes it leaves me a tiny bit tender in the area for a day or so.

Please, is there anyone else who has this sensation???!!!

Hey! I’m so glad I’m not crazy. This happened to me last night at work and don’t get me wrong my job is super physical but I feel it had nothing to do with that and the way you described that is the exact thing that happened to me everyone looked at me like I was crazy. I was bent over pulling on this box but I was sitting out kinda like crouching idk and when the box gave a little for me to try to stand to get it I told them it felt like my insides twisted but this time they stayed it took my breath and the pain was unbearable I let out a groan in pain but kind of terror because it was starting like that then all of a sudden it’s like they went back to normal and my side felt a little swollen. I still don’t know exactly what happened

Twinmom2018 · 29/06/2021 14:26

Also don’t know if this matters but my twins are also three years old.

Obakarama · 13/07/2021 22:57

I commented under a different name years ago. Just got an incident of it. It feels like someone has twisted an organ just beneath my left breast and it sticks like that for some minutes. Still none the wiser. I hate it. Happens after bending or straightening. What is it???

Grannabaker · 18/07/2021 06:41

I have had this “organ slippage” since my son was born — 50 years ago!!
It was only very occasionally at first but lately it seems to happen more frequently. I told my GP and received a blank stare in return. It’s mainly on the left side but can be both. Lately it’s taking longer to have whatever it is slowly slide back into place.
I really wish there was a name for it! Any doctors out there who know what it is?

mrsawhite · 09/08/2021 21:31

Mine seems to be annoying me a lot at the moment. Sorry if tmi. But does anyone find if they um, pass wind, they also get the weird popping sensation in the lower ribs? Like something is popping out of place then back again?

meandchowder · 13/08/2021 21:00

Just read all 9 pages. I'm upper 50s and have had this pain no more than 2-3 times a year for maybe 10 years? Not often at all. Not overweight, no kids. I wouldn't describe it as organs "flipping", but more like a rib suddenly trying to break through an abdominal wall. Seriously the first time it happened I was doing a crunch and my stomach was so distended I thought some alien was going to burst through. Happened yesterday when I'd been sitting on a step stool bending forward to scrape paint. I jumped up immediately and tried to stretch out like you would for a cramp. Between the pain and the sudden standing up, I just about passed out.

After reading all the comments, I'm leaning towards "Slipping rib syndrome". Don't have an appt with a GP until Dec. but I'll try to remember to ask. Meanwhile, here's something you might find useful:
www.healthline.com/health/slipping-rib-syndrome#symptoms

Thanks to everyone for sharing your posts so I had a way to put the experience into words!

Hello all
well I am also relieved that I'm not going mad. I am having the same thing when I bend down or lean forward. I also get bulges appear then they pop back into place. I have been to my doctors loads over the time. He looked at me like I was crazy. As he has never seen these bulges when I have attended.I though a hernia but he has not taken things any further. With the pain that comes when bending down a lady doctor brushed me off with a it's a muscle thing it's nothing to worry about. I am 54 not overweight very slim. Feel like things inside are moving making me feel sick to the stomach with the pain n sensation. Please Les hope someone finds out what it is. After a year and a half of this I'm at my wit's end. It hurts to bits and is happening every day sometime 3 to 4 times.

Creativemusic2 · 20/08/2021 02:43

Hi I’ve just seen these comments and I’ve been very worried about this, mine feels like something moves up then squeezes the pain has gotten worse over time but goes away when I stand up feels like it straightens back out always happens when tying shoe laces or putting shoes on. I’ve been reading up and all I see is in larger spleen or liver issues causing pressure on the stomach has anyone had any answers from their doctors ?

Creativemusic2 · 20/08/2021 02:50

This is exactly how I feel. I’m five years after my son but I got it just before my pregnancy I also mentioned it to A&E dr and he too looked at me as if I had ten heads. The pain is now getting sharper only when I bend over and feels like I’m going to pass out

Chacesmommy · 26/08/2021 22:47

I’m so pleased I found this thread. I have this too & it’s started getting worse.
I have had 2 children by c-section. The second child 2.5 years ago. About 9 months after his birth I started working out & ended up with an umbilical hernia (sticky out belly button). I was told the pregnancy had caused this, combined with lifting weights.
This is when the twisting/flipping sensation stated. I have since had surgery for the hernia, which temporarily stopped the twisting sensation. But now it’s come back, although, my belly button looks ok.
I’m convinced it’s to do with the umbilical hernia, so will go to my GP again.
It’s so frightening when it happens, it makes me feel like one day it won’t pop back into place & I’ll be stuck with the pain 😞

21CCM · 01/09/2021 01:05

Hello everyone! Here I am 6 years after original post having the same problem with the twisting organ type of sensation.

How it went for you? I haven’t been to a doctor but today was the worst feeling so far so I’ll be going to doctor of this continues.

VanillaIce1 · 03/09/2021 20:31

I have this except mine seems to last all day long? It’s fine when laying down and sleeping. I don’t wake up with this but within a few minutes of waking and walking it starts and it just feels like a bulge in my left side under the rib cage and sort of into my tummy? I’ve had two ultrasounds and other than small fatty lumps There’s nothing.
I just wondered if anyone else had it to the point where it feels like a dull ache all day long?

PennyLane9 · 07/09/2021 23:16

Hi ladies I know this is an old post but I'm experiencing the same thing has anyone gotten any answers?

dunemama78 · 17/09/2021 13:18

I am so thankful I found this and that I am not insane. This has happened before and just recently it happened to me yesterday. It's on my left side and I bend over and it feels like something flips and gets stuck. It is so painful and I have to stand up slowly and stretch and it flips back. I was wondering if it had something to do with having the gastric sleeve surgery a few years ago. It just is not a normal thing. Does anyone have answers?

SarahCaxton · 05/10/2021 18:59

Hello
I have the same issue since I had my son in 1979. At 71 I now have hitaus hernia issues and am going to see a specialist tomorrow. I will let you know what he says, as I think this may linked to my hiatus hernia problem.

Chacesmommy · 05/10/2021 21:57

Thank-you for the update. I’m 42 and had this problem since the birth of my second child 2 years ago. I’m also waiting for an appointment with a consultant, as my problem started with the onset of an umbilical hernia (which may have come back). I will keep you all posted!

dslilsis · 08/10/2021 23:39

Has anyone found any answers to this very odd issue?

Polly1313 · 09/10/2021 22:59

I know this is an old post, but this is exactly what happens to me. If I bend over a certain way it happens. It definitely takes my breath away and I get really stiff and scared. I can feel my insides flipping. It’s the strangest feeling. It’s a different type of pain I can’t even describe. I just try to get my stomach to go back to normal. This may be too much info, but it happens a lot when I’m trying to shave my girl area, and I’m bending over trying to see what I’m doing.
Did you ever figure this out and what it is?

JNorvell · 13/10/2021 17:42

I am so glad I am not alone. I have read through this whole thread and see that no one has any answers after all these years.

I have 4 kiddos, with the last one being a emergency c section, just a little over 2 years ago, then an immediate tubal done. Originally, I thought maybe my body wasn't adjusting to the clamps and such that were put onto my tubes during the tubal or that the doctor didn't put my insides back in correctly. I've told that to both my doctor and husband, and they look at me like I've got 10 heads lol.

One of the first episodes I remember happening, I was sitting in the tub, and was leaning over shaving my legs and it felt like when a baby has ran out of room in your belly, and is moving around trying to get comfortable, if you have been pregnant you know the feeling I am taking about. It's painful and takes your breath away. I had to adjust my weight in the tub to make it stop. Then I watched as something moved from the right side of my abdomen back over to the left side and it was over, but a few minutes later it happened again.

I've had many episodes of this happening, some more painful than others, but the thing that stays constant is the fact I can see whatever it is moving, it's not just a feeling that something has moved out of place, you can see it.

I had another episode with it just a couple weeks ago. I had had pneumonia (non covid pneumonia) the week before, then all of a sudden I started having a lot of brain fog issues. I was leaned over in my kitchen with just my head on the counter and it happened. Something moved on my left side in the area under my ribs but above my pelvis area.( side stomach area) It took my breath and I stood up. I pulled my shirt up, seen that my abdomen was kind of sunken in on my left side, and a small bulge on my right side (like when a baby moves to one side of your belly trying to stretch out) then I watched as whatever it was, moved back into place. It happened again, while my 12 year old daughter was standing there, and she asked if I was pregnant, because it looked like a baby moving. She laid her hands on my stomach and felt it move back into place. She swore up and down that it felt just like it did when I was pregnant with her littlest brother.

I ended up at the ER a couple days later because of the brain fog issue, and it happened while I was there, laying propped up on the hospital bed. The nurse seen it, asked if I was pregnant. I told her no, and that I had had a tubal 2 years ago. I told her that this had been happening off and on since I had my last baby. She told me it was probably gas 😖 I told her that must be a massive amount of gas to move my organs to the point you can see it pushing my stomach out and seeing whatever it was move back into place. She shrugged it off and went about her other rounds.

No one seems to know what causes this, but I am glad to know that I am not crazy and others experience this as well.

I have found my people at last!! I too have four children and have had this weirdness for the past 6 years I'd say (my youngest is almost 4) it is exactly as you describe! Hurts so much and then area is sore for a day or two afterwards and mine always happens when I'm in the bath!! What is it?? I've tried to explain it to a doctor before and they've said gallstones but it absolutely isn't
Grekkie9 · 03/11/2021 19:47

Same things been happening to me since I had my bbay in Jan! Always on the left side too

AGrady85 · 12/11/2021 12:49

Good morning to all! It’s interesting to see this thread still going 11 years later. Curious if anyone has found a cause?

My story is similar. Started feeling something off during my second pregnancy and have felt it since. Occasionally, when I bend over too far in a certain way, I feel like what I can only describe as my liver folding in half for a few moments until it stops. It is absolutely the most intense pain, and remains sore for a couple of days after. Have had all kids of imaging over the last 4-5 years to come up with nothing.

I asked my cousin, who is fresh out of medical school and completing her residency in plastic surgery (not the cosmetic kind). She immediately suggested it sounds like something called Intercostal Neuroma. Basically, a nerve in that area is somehow damaged and has some scar tissue buildup. When we bend over, it aggregates that area and creates intense muscle spasm/shock like pain. She said these could be found directly on the underside of the ribcage or very small and thus difficult to find with traditional imaging. She said a neurologist would be the only person who would be able to image and diagnose this type of condition, which is typically easily resolved with a minor surgery once located or left alone if the pain is only an occasional annoyance.

Thought I would share. Best of luck!

AutumnBabes · 01/12/2021 04:35

This exact thing is happening too me! I was thinking hernia or slipping rib syndrome maybe? It is the weirdest sensation. For me or almost feels like something that is definitely supposed to be on the inside of my ribs is trying to fold over onto the outside of my ribs. Hurts like someone is twisting their fist inside my chest/upper abdomen. I have to push it back into place and then wait for it to stop hurting like a bad cramp. Only happens when I lean over forward and to the right while in a sitting position.

AutumnBabes · 01/12/2021 05:05

I'm almost sure this is it.
www.physio-pedia.com/Slipping_Rib_Syndrome
I'm going to pursue this with my doctor as soon as I'm out of quarantine.

Anyone else on this thread find that their joints are very flexible? Might be related

mrsawhite · 01/12/2021 08:08

Actually yes. My elbow is hyper mobile. Can twist it round in a vile fashion!
