'flipping' organs!!

Now you're probably thinking I'm off my rocker here but bear with me!

My DS is 3. Since I gave birth, I sometimes get a weird sensation in my chest/stomach which when I bend right over. The only way to describe it is that it feels like an organ or something is 'flipping'. It takes my breath away and I have to stand up carefully. Then I feel it 'flip' back into place. Usually there are no other after effects. Sometimes it leaves me a tiny bit tender in the area for a day or so.

Please, is there anyone else who has this sensation???!!!

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any update on a diagnosis for these symptoms. I have the same symptoms in my left side. Not usually with pain but very uncomfortable feeling getting stuck when crouched over. I often feel like something is there but can't physically feel it to touch, mainly because of my tummy flab! I've had two caesareans (youngest nearly 3yr) & have a recti diastasis meaning my abdominal muscle don't come together. This means my tummy bulges a fair bit & I admit I have piled a few pounds on since babies, mainly in the tummy region. I've been putting off going to the docs as it's very scary, thinking the worst! I know I should & will do but seek some comfort beforehand Wink
Thanks

I have had this since having my son 3 years ago!! Just like OP said. I tried explaining but... It's like my muscle under my rib is contracting, then feels like it just flips back down in place. I think it's a muscle spasm..? But don't know why or why it hasn't gone. Never been to a doctor about it as it's probably "just one of those things" after having a baby.
There's someone else that has it! Shock

Tanfastic · 02/06/2015 00:02

I get this too, how strange, normally when sat down trying shoes on in shops.

I assumed it was a pulled muscle or something but the flipping sensation is very strange. Glad I'm not alone!

Powaqa · 02/06/2015 00:21

I get this at leas once a week and I last had a child 26 years ago.

It's always on the left side and that feeling of "flipping " is so accurate

Lonz · 02/06/2015 11:14

I'm sure it's just like getting a cramp in your leg when the muscle is stiff then slowly goes back to normal. It's over-use of the muscle (and baby kicking you!)
It is weird though that it even happens in the first place. I never got any cramps before having my son, now I get them in the same place in my left foot, right leg and on the right under my ribs! It happened more often after having my son, everytime I bent down to put shoes on, pull socks off, pull jeans off and shaving my legs, but now he's 3 it happens less often (or I've just gotten used to it?)

I tried pin pointing the muscle on an anatomy diagram but there doesn't seem to be anything on the cause of this certain 'cramping pain' problem after pregnancy on Google, it's all about exercise or 'after pains'! Sad

I'm now 48 and when pregnant with Ds2 14 years ago I broke my rib through coughing. For at least 12 of the years since then I have had exactly same symptoms being described here...like a vital organ folding over and sticking when I lean forward when sitting in a deep sofa or as you say putting socks on. I then have to wait while the 'organ' unsticks. I have a permanent tenderness around one of my right ribs. Years ago the doc told me it was cartilage possibly attached to the rib and nothing to worry about. Keep meaning go back and get re checked. Bloomin annoying and inconvenient especially since working out with trainer more recently and have to keep stopping mid exercise.

Rowgtfc72 · 06/06/2015 08:55

I've had this since having dd. She's eight now. Always on the left side and no pain after whatever it is flips back!

mr5v33 · 15/06/2015 05:54

I have had this same issue since having my daughter almost 5 years ago. I am not overweight, in fact, technically I'm underweight, so don't let anyone blame your weight ladies Wink I have endometriosis and so see a neuromuscular therapist who works on breaking up the adhesions. Yesterday she was working on my entire abdomen, as I've been sitting at a desk lately, and that does wonders to jack up my body, when she got to the sensitive spot right under my rib cage, in the middle. It turns out my stomach had flipped, and lodged itself under there. She coaxed it out, and showed me how to do it myself, as apparently this is not uncommon. I will be interested to see if this helps with all the sharp pains and feelings of ribs popping out. She suggested I get a CT scan after that session, which she's never done before, so I'm not sure if she felt something that concerned her. She's not a dr so I know she would never say anything to put fear in me, but it's got me thinking why this time and not before. Anyway, I will keep you updated as to whether this helps or not, and/or whether a CT scan shows anything Smile

I've had this since giving birth to my 2nd child 3 years ago. I first mentioned it to my gp in the post natal appointment and he thought maybe I'd pulled a muscle during labour and got me to do a few stretches which did nothing. He has since left and other gp's haven't had any idea. I'm not convinced by their judgement though - it took 18 months to get referred for physio and it turned out I'd twisted my hip in pregnancy. I will go back as the symptoms are bothering me now. Started like a cramp in the centre under my ribs whenever I bent down to put on socks or pick something up etc and the only way to relieve it is to stretch my arms up over my head then the muscle or whatever it is pops back into place. I'm getting a constant dull ache to the right now so I'll go back and insist they take it seriously! I'll update when I can.

I'm losing my mind! I've had this for 5 years now (since DS was born via c-section). GP thought I had pleurisy. Two X-rays showed nothing. It's been getting worse over the years. Daily occurrence now. Getting sonogram and blood work soon. Will post again with outcome.Confused

pauline737 · 17/08/2015 06:46

This happens to me also. Under my left ribcage. I can physically feel the muscle flip then flip back. I have a 2 yr old and hada c section. Would love to find out resolutions.

joycesmith18 · 15/09/2015 21:47

I have this since my c section 7 years ago...I know its from my c section but mo doctor can tell me what it is...I had to give up yoga as every time I bent down I would get pain under my ribs and into chest..I could see my organs getting caught...I also have problems when eating the food gets caught in my chest...Would love to hear some success stories.

HummingBird51 · 05/11/2015 23:39

Hello I'm experiencing something very similar quite early on after my emergency C section. Its now been 10months since my C section and it doesn't seem to show any signs of Improving! it's on my right side and I've noticed it more when I'm sitting on the floor and leaning to the left side. I'll move or try to turn to my right and it feels like my internal organs won't move the way I need to turn! The muscle (I assume it's a muscle) underneath my bottom right rib feels like it flips and it's extremely uncomfortable and intense pain when it does happen! It aches for the rest of the day and it makes me feel quite sick when it happens!
I'm quite active and have taken up hula hooping as exercise as I thought this would strengthen my core stomach muscles but this hasn't seemed to stop this weird cramping !
Did anyone find out or get to the bottom of what this is?

A bit of Googling led me to an article about Painful Rib Syndrome. Seems it is often overlooked and underdiagnosed.

hopes5 · 13/11/2015 20:34

I have had this sudden pain thing through feeling something is being trapped under my ribs firstly for years was my left side ribs when bent forward tying shoes etc. It would apparently snap back to normal when I stood up quickly. Then a few weeks ago it went really BADLY on the right side, I was bending over and moving a cupboard, It really hurt felt like I had broken a rib it went really sore and couldn't roll over in bed even. The pain is still there to a fashion. The strange thing is My husband says he gets it as well. so its not just women or pregnant women that are afflicted by this syndrome.

Dl2967 · 02/12/2015 21:55

Bruised all the time..i havent. Really talked much to a dr im going to!and see whats going on ..

hopes5 · 03/12/2015 15:23

I am a pensioner have had this happening on the right side then the left for years. It is as lots say the feeling something is trapped under the lower rib cage and makes one have to straighten up abruptly. I had been moving a cupboard which was heavy and bent over when this happened very badly. I jumped up quickly but it seemed worse than other times and for weeks after it was more like when you crack a rib and cant roll over properly in bed or bend over as normal. The strange thing is my husband says he has always had that trapped SOMETHING under the ribs when bending over on occasions. So not only a women thing so it would seem.

I also have another strange phenomena that afflicted me recently, it started off with pain and aching when eating under my chin between the jaw bones. Then I got severe pain around the ear and jaw joints when eating, it was then there all the time. I also had an excruciating pain up the back of my head on the left side. The doc seemed to poo poo me as if I was imagining it all. But agreed to send me to a specialist.
By the time I got an appointment it had virtually gone back tot he pain under chin when eating and the Specialist said it could be because I have some teeth missing on the bottom at the back..affecting my bite.. I am having dentures made so if I get this horrible thing again in its bad form as I still get the pain under the chin when eating he cannot say it is teeth related.. On plus side it did make me eat less and loose about 1/2 a stone so now 8.5 ish stone.. Doctors are ok diagnosing the usual things but given something that causes one excruciating pain but is not a regular thing they come across they say are you sure your not imagining it which is really annoying.

Cherryperry1962 · 13/12/2015 22:36

I get it on my right side when I bend over....laying in a certain upright position....in the tub or couch etc. Apparently from holding my head up at a certain height. I have to straighten myself to get it to pop back. If it lasts too long its like really sore there for a couple days. Like i worked out hard for the very first time. But it feels like an organ flipping right behind my top ribs. Feels like theirs a baby moving in there ! Lol

Kimmi05 · 15/01/2016 03:42

I Just experienced this again 10 15 minutes ago and thought I google it.
Been having this for around 2 years now it started now and then now if I bend over or reach the wrong way Oh god it feels like organs are pushed up my left side of my chest and after a minute or 2 things slide back down in place and leave a discomfort feeling.
Just Not fun at all
If anyone comes up with what is it please share.
Thanks
Kimmi

I just google my question and it gave me this page. I am 60 years old and have experience this excruciating pain under my left side/ rib cage, on several occasion. On Thursday, I bent down to put on my water aerobics shoes and i felt like I would pass out from the pain. I did get in the pool for an hour but the almost unbearable pain persisted for 2 days. I could have sworn something, maybe one of my organ was snatched out of place and jammed back. Still a little sore today. Got to be an explanation!

RogerTheTodgerDodger · 01/02/2016 08:25

Quite relieved I stumbled across this thread. Last week I bent down from a sitting position and something popped out from underneath my right ribs!! It bloody hurt! It went back to where it came from after I straightened up but has been niggling ever since.
I already have an umbilical hernia so wasn't sure if it was related to that, even though they aren't in the same place. Can a hiatal hernia stick out??
I bent over dc3s cot a few months ago and the bars dug in to my bottom rib and caused a sharp stabbing pain. Maybe I did some damage then? God I hope so because Ive actually convinced myself I'm dying!! Off for blood tests this morning and my gp agreed(he was reluctant) to send me for an ultrasound but the wait is about 4 weeks for that.
I have barely eaten for days worrying about it all. I feel sick and dizzy too-I'm hoping that's the anxiety of the situation causing that.
Has anyone else actually felt/seen this popping out??

mamaneedsamojito · 01/02/2016 08:37

Does it feel like something catches on your rib cage? I've had this for a few years, it doesn't hurt but feels weird. It's worse when I'm stressed but I sometimes also go months without really noticing if.

RogerTheTodgerDodger · 01/02/2016 10:48

Sort of. Something basically stuck out from 'under' the bottom of my ribs on the right! Hurt like hell!

Bomby05 · 14/04/2016 08:25

Hi! Im having an exact symptoms.. Anyone here know what it is?? Its been years! Pls anyone? Thanks!

Shel17 · 27/04/2016 21:19

Hi Everyone. Just read this thread dating back 4yrs wow. Yes also have the same. I bend over eg putting shoes on & get a twisted muscle pain under my left rib. I sometimes feel dizzy & can see flashing lights. Over the years I have found the following - higher fat / sugary foods increase the frequency eg esp worse after Xmas! My diet is generally very healthy but I can feel the difference when my diet is poor. I suppose this also increases abdominal fat so would make sense. When I used to get this feeling I would walk around the room frantically pulling myself up & trying to apply pressure under my rib- however I found drinking lots & lots of water really helps - & I mean gallons - you can feel it 'unpop' The last time I went to see a GP I eventually saw a consultant who said it was 'rib tip syndrome' - sounds like a made up name!!!! I now carry around lots of water & ensure I do not overheat / become dehydrated. Good Luck!
