For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

SB from what i remember they loook nice but taste boring - like cucumber a bit.

i saw kumquats at my market yesterday - yum.

SuperBunny · 04/02/2009 01:11

Oh, they always have a basket of kumquats by the checkout - what do you do with them? Should I get those instead?

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 06:45

Bee, i'n not sure a vegan's answer will be useful but I think it would be fine. Give them lots of breadcrumb if you are frying though in case they are moist enough to fall to bits. Grilling or baking safer. Or add some of that ovoid stuff.

SB, that is scary about the starfruits.

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 06:45

are kumquats the ones like tiny oranges? I think they can taste quite bitter.

chefswife · 04/02/2009 07:02

popping in about what to do with kumquats... cut them in half and use them in a stir fry. you can't really eat them unless they're cooked.

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 07:04

that's really interesting, thank you chefswife

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 07:04

Why good morning ladies, I do hope the day finds you all in the rudest of health.

Guad...a relief about Ds.

I think you are probably very right Franny.....feels only slightly admonished, ..in my instance I need a focus away from feeling monumentally sorry for myself-- my ailments. Talking rubbish is sort of a coping strategy.

So.

Yesterday.....

Juice, (only counts as 1 portion but drank lots cos of my mouth.)
Broccoli.
baked beans,
Soup (not blended) with,
onions,
peppers,
carrots,
peas,
beans,
pulses,
sweetcorn,
tomatoes,
spinach,
banana.

2 portions.

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 07:06

rudest?

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 07:43

DON'T get me started young lady!!!!!!!!!!!

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 07:46
Grin
TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 08:12

Potatoes.

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 08:14

Could we have a sister thread where we can go and talk incessantly in the same good company, but keep this one for the very nature that it was intended?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/02/2009 08:21

Congratulations Aunty Boco. I love his name.

Guad - I have seen that make in Waitrose. I bought my friend some pink champagne truffles, she said they were delish.

In the words of Scarlett, tomorrow is another day, and after an ok nights sleep I am no longer feeling shouty

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 08:26

...glad for you Lemur.

And Boco. I love being an aunty, and have two deliciously gorgeous nieces.

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 08:38

I would suggest people start their own thread, if they find this one isn't quite filling their needs, but call it something different rather than 10/10 or whatever - i am sure you can think of something

i think it would be a really good idea to try to focus on f+v for at least a short while
i have been aware people have been really asking for help with this for some time now and i have not done anything about it - well this is my suggestion now, sorry it took me a while

i hope it helps

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 08:41

guad dammit i didn't see that challenge until i had already had breakfast

i declare apple, 1.5 banana, raisins and melon = 4.5

we are running out of fruit AGAIN

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/02/2009 08:46

Franny - do you find eating a lot of fruit in the morning affects your blood sugar levels?

I warn you, now I am focusing on the 10/10 I will be asking some very odd and stupid questions

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 08:48

Oh Franny.....I didn't mean anything like that. I think it is a brilliant thread and the idea is great, The sister thread was just a suggestion because we all seem to get along so well and enjoy narreing and it would be able to do both. T honour the true natire of wehta this thread is intended for and still keep each otheres good company

I am so so sorry
i am crying

sorry sorry sorry

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 08:49

oh no i WANT the daft qs it is interesting

erm no, i haven't, but i have it with oats and soya milk and sunflower and pumpkin seeds
if i miss the seeds out i do get v shaky by about 11, but with them it keeps me going ok

OP posts:
pinkspottywellies · 04/02/2009 08:52

No Feather! Don't cry or be sorry. Franny wasn't telling you off ((hug))

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 08:52

feather what are you on about! i don't know why you are crying
i think it is a good idea to start another chat thread if you want to, i don't see why that would be a problem in any way?
however without meaning to be sad about it, this is a very long running thread which i have started, and i am proprietorial about it and don't want anyone else starting threads called 10/10!
so you could start your own thread called something else? i really don't know what has upset you, i am not upset, i think it's a sensible idea if people want to chat a lot and feel they are getting in the way of the veg chat

Right yesterday's list:

raisins
tinned apricots
orange juice
tomato (tiny bit)
apple sauce (tiny bit)
baked beans
courgette

Maybe nearly 6. Not bad. Had junky lunch in cafe cause wouldn't have made it home from toddlers in one go! Walked to toddlers and back - not advisable in the ice in my condition but good exercise and pushed double buggy half the way back (my wonderful friend pushed it the rest of the time!)

Today so far:
tinned mango
raisins
orange juice
Will have tomato and sweetcorn at lunch, which I probably wouldn't have done if Franny hadn't pointed out what we are actually here for Need to shop for fresh stuff but not planning to leave the house til the ice has melted!! So will make more effort with tins and frozen that we have in. Exercise wise - walking up and down stairs with the potty half a dozen times a day is plenty for me

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 09:03

pink that's fab
keep it up

right am off to work, everyone eat f+v

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 04/02/2009 09:27

Right, I am feeling focused and full of fruit. Let me think, how many were there

Mango
passionfruit
banana
pear
blueberries
grapes
sultanas

Admittedly not quite a whole portion of some of them but getting on for 5, maybe 4.75. What was that, franny, 4.5 you say? Oh, I seem to have won. Mwah ha ha.

I am going to do a fast walk to town in a minute to buy fruit from the market, am sick of picking up duff mangoes in Somerfields. My veg box comes tomorrow but it is full of the old reliables and not exactly overflowing with tasty bits. I want exotic

Lemur - if I just have fruit and yoghurt I don't feel that hungry but if I have granola like this morning I find I am hungry again by 11 and wanting cake or biscuit.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/02/2009 09:34

blimey Guad that's a lot of fruit!

It's the afternoon where things start going pear shaped for me. I think I need more protein with my lunch. Will have to have a think .....

Baby Lemur and me are off to a coffee morning today. We haven't been to this host's house before, so I'm looking forward to having a nosey!

TWF - no need to be upset. Come and list with us. No nuts or diet coke though
