Hello Cappucino. I am hopelessly amateur as well timing wise at least. Slow and steady is how I am running thses days. I have a 10k coming up in under four weeks now. Am off today for a 10.9k run and then will do a 2 mile as fast as I can this week and anything else will be slow and steady.

ThatBeetroot · 21/05/2007 08:07

YOu are doing 10.9 K today Glitter - jesus!

I will do five miles - slowly!!

glitterfairy · 21/05/2007 08:11

Its my long run beets. I couldnt do it yesterday because of tap exams so did a cycle ride instead. Also have hurt my calf muscles a bit. Forgot to stretch properly after the gym on friday. Went for a run on Saturday and it was a little painful so have rested yesterday and cycled instead.

I am a little nervous about the 10k in a few weeks and want to do better than my last 5k race which was very hilly but I came last at 42 minutes.

glitterfairy · 21/05/2007 11:40

OK done and dusted 10.9k in an hour and a half which I dont think is too bad. It felt quite hot today as well. I remembered to stretch

hana · 21/05/2007 12:13

hattie - I just googled 10k charity runs! It's a cancer research one that you pay £17 something to enter, and then raise money on top of that. You can go to the caner research website and click on the links to their runs. It's Sept 30

And cappucino, not at all! I am running about 30 min, give or take a bit. No idea how far that is, and it's about twice a week, more if I'm lucky. Feeling good for it though

hana · 21/05/2007 12:13

glitterfairy, that's great! Bet you feel fab

hattie2 · 21/05/2007 13:57

thanks hana - i'll google for it!

ThatBeetroot · 21/05/2007 14:47

well done glitter.

I ran 5.3 miles today in 53 mis - feel I am getting slower

littlecityblue · 21/05/2007 19:18

Hiya runners
I'm new to running and almost beginning to enjoy it. My DP is nagging me to give it a go - he's just done the Paris marathon and is much more into it than I could ever be, but then he doesn't cart an excess 3 stone like me... Never mind, I do try! I have been running for about 20 minutes without stopping, which is great for me. My running history is pretty grim so far - I think I was in the last 10 of the Blaydon Race a few years back - so things can only improve! I must say, just reading about your running has motivated me and I'll be going out as soon as DP gets in from his. We're living in France at the moment, and it's hot, hot, hot, so late night outings are about all I can manage.

mckenzie · 21/05/2007 21:00

welcome littlecityblue. Hope you enjoy your run tonight.

popsycal · 22/05/2007 06:29

hana - those cancer rearch 10k runs are the ones i am thinking of doing in sept.
i need tro get my knes put right first and my new trainers are arriving today...

littlecityblue · 22/05/2007 10:33

Thanks, mckenzie. I did enjoy it, all the more for the fact that I didn't have to be nagged to do it Now I just need to keep it up!

DuchessOfNorksWearsTemperley · 22/05/2007 10:48

I've recently started running again after a 10 year gap. I stopped because I had very torn knees! So I began quite gently and now run just 1 or 2 miles, 3 or 4 times per week. I did a 3.5 mile run last week and was very pleased with my performance but my knees hurt for several days after, (I went faster and on tarmac, I usually run on forest paths) so I think I'll have to stick to short & frequent for the time being.

Does anyone think my knees will get stronger as the surrounding muscle improves? Or am I being too optimistic.

MaryHinge · 22/05/2007 10:51

Hello littlecityblue and Norks.

Norks - you and Popsy can be knee buddies. Have you got good shoes?

MaryHinge · 22/05/2007 10:53

It's Saggar BTW.

Note to self - change name back.

DuchessOfNorksWearsTemperley · 22/05/2007 10:56

Before I started running again I was fitted for Reebok air-cushioned cross-country trainers so I think they're OK, I don't feel any hint of 'jarring' when I'm actually running. And I warm up/cool down too.

popsycal · 22/05/2007 11:38

oooh my trainers arrived
the nike triax ones

Pidge · 22/05/2007 13:15

norks - I did find that when I started running my knees hurt after runs for about the first 7 months. Not massively painful but definitely sore and enough to inhibit smoothly going downstairs. But I don't have any problems nowadays ... so maybe that's hopeful for you. I just think my muscles got stronger and got used to the running.

Am still patiently taking time off to get over the FLM induced foot thing I've had. Must not run too soon, must not run too soon!!! Might try a little gentle 20 minutes this weekend though.

DuchessOfNorksWearsTemperley · 22/05/2007 13:40

That's interesting Pidge - so another 5 months and I might be OK

The rest of me is always ache-free, I walk for an hour a day with the dog and I ride and swim regularly too. So it's deffo a knee-thing rather than a fitness thing.

popsycal · 22/05/2007 14:13

are you wearing the right trainers....

annaphylactic · 22/05/2007 14:27

Popsy - I have Nike triax trainers and am very impressed with them.

Did a good 3.2k run this morning. Have signed up for a 5.5mile fell run in Sept so need to get my distance upped.

Have ordered an ipod shuffle as current crappy mp3 player is doing my head in.

popsycal · 22/05/2007 14:43

just ran round the house in them and knees feel great - got them at a bagrgain price too

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 22/05/2007 14:47

I had knee problems with my Asics but none (touch wood) since getting the Nikes.

fairyflipflop · 22/05/2007 16:01

Oooh!I'm so excited so have found this thread? Can I join you? I've just started running again after having my ds - just couldn't face it until now. Need some ideas on how to fit runs in with a 13 month old and work!!

popsycal · 22/05/2007 17:02

omg what a difference these trainers make!!!! they are for severe overpronaters andf they arer fab!!! thought twice about goig for a run as knees still not 100% but they feel fine!
did 2 miles.....9:35 for first 1 and just under 20 for the 2
