She looked very well! Said she was tired so hadnt been exercising... ffs, I thought! She's got 3.5 kids You lot seriously impress me. Which brings me onto you, Hattie2.. please get back into your stride asap. Learn from stupid me who didnt do it as soon as ds1 was born, and its taken me forever. I almost feel like me again, but ds1 is 3.5 now! I saw everything as an obstacle; 2 c sections, lack of space to keep a jogger, how hard it is to run with a jogger, how tired I wa safter first baby blah blah blah. Why didnt I just have the discipline that I did prekids? DO IT!!!! You sound very into running anyway, so dont lose it; its precious. Lecture over

Gizmo · 02/05/2007 16:37

Yes SAH!

Mustrunmore is official NCO of the mumsnet runner's threads . Could you donate a little discipline to me, please? I have not run one stride since sunday 22nd and I think I've probably officially recovered now.

So, folks, what do you think would be a nice first outing for me? I have to be able to go from home and please, mercy, no speed work... I'm in your hands: what should I do?

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 19:03

Whereabouts are you Gizmo? How about a run to a park, x number of laps round, and home? Or how about run for as long as your favourite cd lasts?!

I'm going for an easy hour tonight, on treadmill... very easy... 9-9.5kphish.

mckenzie · 02/05/2007 19:15

the cd idea is great mustrunmore. i sued to run to Bob Seger's greatest hits (am i showing my age??)on teh treadmill and would run to the beat of each track. It was a great way to vary the pace without really thinking about it.
I'm wary of running outside with a walkman though.

Ditzymumofone · 02/05/2007 19:19

Had started to get very keen and running for approx 45 minutes 4 times a week (not sure how far) but had appendix out 10 days ago. How long until I can get out again as sitting around the house is making me board and am eating crap. And on the grounds that I gain weight really easily and take ages to loose it when can I run again!

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 19:21

Mckenzie, i'm currently trying to save up to get one of those teeny weeny ipods you strap on your forearm

If anyone has already done a compliation cd of good running tracks at a speed of 9-10kph, I'd love a copy

Try Mika; its my running cd of the moment! Fantastic.

Lilliput · 02/05/2007 19:24

One of the reasons I started running was to keep my weight down but I'm sure it has actually gone up. Is this muscle? My body shape has changed slightly, I feel as though my waist is disappearing. What changes did other people find running did to their body?

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 19:29

It'll prob be muscle; weighs more than fat. When I got fit before the boys, my weight did go down, and the shape improved, but only over a long period; maybe a year or so. I got to perfect weight, then got pg
Now, I have lost nothing at all weightwise since ds2 was born, and I donr think I've changed shape, although I am in a pair or combats that didnt used to fit, and my old training bra. Thing is, I bought the combats after ds1, gutted that I had to but a bigger size. And now i'm pleased that I've got back into them

My biggest challenge now is how to fit other forms of exercise in. I'm so used to having a gym to work in, but no longer have that luxury. And not so much free time! Due to the time issue, the other stuff has to be very very useful, not just faffing about IYSWIM.

MrsSpoon · 02/05/2007 19:33

Training for the Race for Life too, so far that has only involved paying my fee to enter the race. Although I do quite a bit of other exercise I just can't face going out for a run.

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 19:35

Which/when is your one?
Why oh why didnt I do Enfield? It cant be as hilly as Hampstead!

mckenzie · 02/05/2007 19:58

it's fairlyl hilly as it's at Trent Park!

mckenzie · 02/05/2007 20:00

how old are your children? My two love it when i get down on the floor and do press ups. and if I try sit ups they think it's great fun to climb on top of me making it twice as hard.

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 20:00

God, I havent been there inages. I really shouldve done it there, as thats only 2 buses to get there, rather than 15,000!

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 20:03

3.5 and 14months. ds2 is just gtting a bit too long to use him as a hand weight now And he has a habit of sitting on my neck when ever I lie on the floor Ds1 loves doing exercise ball with me (he has a little softball), and is allowed 5 mins treadmill with me if he's been good He's fast, so if I could get him to run longer than 3 mins in the real world, it'd be very good, eg coming back from nursery.

mckenzie · 02/05/2007 20:04

I saw a lady last week with a triple running jogger!!!!!!! Could you get a double one?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 02/05/2007 20:04

Well I had a good run this morning. Will go again tomorrow, bit longer hopefully.

I find that Shakira's Laundry Service album is good for running.

Lilliput - my weight has gone up since starting running. The change in body shape so far is all in my legs - my thighs are doning up and looking more defined. My calves have grooves in them! Hopefully my tummy will start shrinking soon.

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 20:08

There's no way i'm letting ds1 get back in a buggy Took me long enough to get him out of it, honestly. If only you knew the hassle; him being in a buggy is my pet gripe. I got so much stick from a certain friend for him still being in there at just over 2. I do jog very dodgily with the p&t, but only with ds2 in it.

You're psychic. Shakira is one of my top albums ever, mainly for nostalgic reasons.

MrsSpoon · 02/05/2007 20:14

Mustrunmore, I didn't know they put hills in the Race for Life! I did Kirkcaldy last year and it was pretty flat, doing Stirling this year, hope there's not any hills there.

MrsSpoon · 02/05/2007 20:17

Quite relieved at all you runners who are putting on weight. I put on last year whilst training for the Race for Life and then put on more when I started doing RPM (similar to Spinning) classes, dreading what will happen when I start training for the RFL this year! It's all muscle then?

Lilliput · 02/05/2007 20:34

I'm doing Edinburgh on 3rd June, it's around Holyrood park and I am told the first bit is up hill .

Pidge · 02/05/2007 20:52

mustrunmore - my dd1 is 4.5 and she STILL dives in the pushchair given half a chance! Dd2 on the other hand, who is 2 won't get in the blasted thing, and nice though it is that she wants to walk, sometimes you have to go somewhere FAST!

Am getting positively twitchy with not running since the FLM ... but foot, ankle thingy still twinging. And now I won't have a chance to run till Monday. Probably good for me though to have a complete break and make sure it heals.

Gizmo - I was told 2 weeks off is de rigeur. On the other hand, am tempted to say GET THOSE TRAINERS ON . You know you'll feel so much better once you've done it. I would plan a 25 minute really flat slow poddle to tempt me out the door.

mustrunmore · 02/05/2007 21:16

God, no! He's never going in. I had a day off child duties the other week. Dh had to have them for oneday, and he let ds1 in the back seat because he thought they'd be late for nursery And that was after I left a precise schedule, which works every single day.

I want to be fit enough to do a marathon I'm thinking half one yr after next? Based on the fact that it took me a year to build up to the last one, but now I only have half the time to train!

Pidge · 03/05/2007 08:58

daffodil - just got our latest issue of Which and they are reviewing treadmills! If you CAT me I could send you a copy of the article. Haven't looked at it myself yet, but then I rather love pounding the pavements. Plus even my gentle hints about getting a GPS or heart rate monitor for birthday / Christmas seem to be ignored by my dp!

popsycal · 03/05/2007 17:16

Can I jump in?
I am on the race for life for novices thread and am a total novice - but just timed a mile (walk 1 min run 2 mins cycle) and did it is 12:42 on my fourth ever run lol.

Feeling quite motivated

popsycal · 03/05/2007 18:17

Ok - I need some advice from you more experienced runners

Bras.
I have my exercise ones from pre-children but they dont do the job. I bought another at the weekend in my size and it is RUBBISH. What do you suggest? Bear in mind I am still breastfeeding (albeit a 2 year old and only first thing and last thing....)

How to run.
I am aware I may be doing a 'Phoebe from Friends' (you know what I mean????) and wonder about my posture etc. ANy advice on how to run?
