Tmi warning: heavy bleeding/clots after mirena removal

Hello all
Sorry for tmi but I am really worried as my Dr did not forwarn me about any of this. I had my mirena removed just over a week ago and last night I began bleeding excessively- to the point of soaking through pads every hour and going through to my clothes. I began losing lots of very large and solid clots too. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and wondered if this is something that can happen following mirena removal?
Thanks.

I had my mirena removed on 11/7/19 and my period returned on 1/2/20 and it’s now 1/18 and I’m still bleeding, it’s horrific, soaking through everything about every 2hours ( doc said it’s normal) so how long will this last do you know

Sandeae · 18/01/2020 14:49

I had my mirena removed on 11/7/19 and my period returned on 1/2/20 and it’s now 1/18 and no signs of slowing down, it’s horrible, changing tampon and pad every 2 hours (gyn says it’s normal) but my question is has anyone else had this and how long will it last? Plus I suffered from the mirena crash but that’s better now at least

Gillybean16 · 18/01/2020 16:33

I had mine out 18th December 19 started bleeding that night and didn’t stop until 2bd January. I had my coil in only for 2 weeks as it didn’t agree with me at all. I then started bleeding again 12th Jan.
I have now paid and I am going private I can’t handle it anymore I am getting depressed about it and everything else in my life.
Hope you stop soon cx

Sandeae · 18/01/2020 21:04

I had mine the full five years and loved it, minus the weight gain and hair loss but I do hope i balance out soon

MyBeloved · 20/01/2020 22:29

@Sandeae, please go to your doctor as you may need tranexamic acid, and an iron levels check.

I’ve had my Mirena coil now fitted last May , it started off all ok it had but my heavy periods but last month it started to get heavy and last 3 weeks leaving me a weeks gap before due on again , this month it’s heavy again and the seating from the 18th jan I’ve started loosing large clots and evening leaking out on to my trousers even buy wearing a tampax and a pad . Has anyone else had this ?
I’ve seen the doc but wants me to leave it longer and take notes of what’s happening till we speak in March 😞

ahran2k · 22/01/2020 17:04

@Je427666c the Mirena site says that once your period becomes lighter after Mirena insertion and then it becomes heavy then it is sign of Mirena misplacement. With your bleeding I don't think the doctor bothered to check the Mirena. Can you check it yourself or get it checked once your bleeding stops.

Mel2202 · 22/01/2020 22:29

I did have the scan after it was fitted to check it was in position right which it was 🤔

Mel2202 · 22/01/2020 22:31

It’s je on new namr

Sandeae · 23/01/2020 00:33

Sounds like it has moved you need an ultrasound to check if it is still in place,

ahran2k · 23/01/2020 07:08

@Mel2202 sometimes if you have a history of fibroids the Mirena gets pushed out because a fibroid grows and pushes the Mirena. I am not sure that this has happened so please don't stress out. A thick uterine build up which causes periods to be long and heavy is caused by estrogen dominance caused by ovarian cyst, general hormonal imbalance or fibroids. Mirena is known to cause ovarian cyst but most times they clear out on their own. If your period is due in a week , see what happens and if you are still bleeding heavy insist on a scan and see if your gp could prescribe progesterone for the bleeding.

Mel2202 · 23/01/2020 09:02

Thanks, but I checked I photo I took of the large clot I passed last Saturday and by zooming in you can see the coil in there , so it all adds up why I’m bleeding heavy and clotting 😞😡. After 8 month as well , I’m gutted .

ahran2k · 23/01/2020 09:44

@mel2202 I am really sorry for you. Life isn't fair sometimes. Best visit your doctor and let them know about your situation. What caused you to have Mirena in the first place? The GP might advice you an alternative, something that works with your body- a pill, injection

Mel2202 · 23/01/2020 10:54

Heavy periods and pain , they wouldn’t put me back on the pill after I had my last daughter because my husband had the snip , they put me in the mini pill which didn’t work for me either . Had this for the last 10years now 😞

ahran2k · 23/01/2020 11:13

@mel2202 if you are okay with it you can ask for ablation or hyterectomy. NHS does not approve uterus removal nowadays but the consultant can use his discretion if they have tried at least 2 alternate methods which in your case is Mirena and pills. If you want to go with less invasive method then go for ablation. You will have to ask your gp for a gynaecologist referral. Has any of your ultrasound reports ever pointed out that you may be suffering from Adenomyosis. Unfortunately there is no test to confirm the condition. The symptoms are painful, heavy periods where no other cause exists like fibroids, cyst or endo. In my experience a consultant is more compassionate for your heavy bleeding and will try their best to treat rather than gp' who like to blame everything on perimenopause. So ask for a referral, gp won't refuse you with your current problems.

Hello
I had a Marina removed last week Tuesday after having in for 5 months’ it did t give me any peace it hurt so badly everyday no bleeding at all just pain so I had it removed. I started to bleed the Saturday so heavily it’s ridiculous pouring actually. I’m 18 and I’ve no children so probably shouldn’t really be on this chat but I’ve been researching my symptoms and this chat came up and I recognised my symptoms so I thought I’d join to get some advice I hope you ladies don’t mind. I only had the merina fitted because of really horrible periods I’d tried everything pills injections this is by far the worst option. My mum
Wants to take me to A&E but I’ve a scan booked for Saturday and I can still have It whist bleeding so I’m just gonna go for that. I was going to take some of the transamic acid but I think this will just prolong it. I don’t know what to do for the best really. I’m fed up with it all. Any suggestions please

MyBeloved · 18/02/2020 21:22

Hi Debokye

Just wondered if you'd ever been checked for endometriosis before they gave you the mirena? If not, ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist so they can check you out. Your symptoms could point to that.
Good luck Flowers

I am ridiculously late to this but as with all the other contributors, I was not told about the pain and bleeding after the Mirena was removed. Mine was in for all of 30 days. I bled, albeit lightly, the entire time and my uterus would not stop contracting. A PID was suspected, swabs taken and issued 14 day supply of antibiotics. Removal was pain free but have been bleeding since. A lot of clots, mainly after passing urine. Seems worse in the morning and later in the day. A great deal of abdominal pain too. Throughout this time, I was instructed to continue taking the pill back to back. I am quite alarmed to be bleeding at all. Definitely wasn’t prepared. Has anyone else been in the same position with regard to being on the pill throughout and still bleeding after the Mirena removal?
Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to express my gratitude to all the ladies in this thread! I had my Mirena out one week ago with little issue. The doctor couldn’t find the thread initially, so had to dig around. No bleeding or cramping until 5 days later. Copious amounts of blood and clots started pouring out one evening while sitting with my kids. I had never been warned this might happen by the physician. The kids hysterical I was hemorrhaging. The gynecologist finally prescribing progesterone and acting like this was a total unique situation and I was a dramatic fool. Finding this thread and reading all these similar stories really eased my nerves! I didn’t think the body could loose so much blood and large clots, and I had three children! Thank you again so much and I am going to share this with my doctor next week and hopefully other women that present with the same problem won’t be treated like crazed hypochondriacs ❤️❤️

Juliaghoulia7 · 15/06/2020 18:05

I’m so grateful I found this thread as well! I removed my Mirena myself two days ago as I bled for four months straight and I had HAD IT. In that time, I also had to start antidepressants as my depression and anxiety were out of control. I attributed this to COVID and the upside-down world we are living in currently, but within hours after removing it I felt better emotionally. The bleeding I had been having slowed down yesterday, and I was so excited to maybe see the end of it. However today it has picked up again, and is dark red with some clots. It’s not extremely heavy, but I was concerned nonetheless. I am not experiencing pain or other symptoms. I am so reassured to know this is not an unusual event. I have a phone appointment to speak with my doctor tomorrow morning anyhow.
Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

MrsSpor · 04/11/2020 23:51

Amazing this thread is still going strong!
Heads up - long story 😂

I had mirena for 2.5 years, in that time I had migraines and anxiety. It was removed May 2018 and copper coil immediately placed, my periods came back but weren't too bad and didn't bother me. Fast forward to March 2020 I have a normal period, in April I am ill with covid then no period until the end of July which lasted 9 weeks and was extremely heavy. Diagnosed with anaemia and appt made at sexual head health clinic, they did internal ultrasound, discovered coil sitting low so they removed it, at they same time took a womb sample which came back clear.
Fast forward to today, I've been bleeding extremely heavily for 4 weeks, lots of clots. No pain.
Has anyone else experienced this after coil removal & does it settle down? Could it just be a build up from the 4 months I didn't have a period?
I am on ferrous fumerate for anaemia & got a prescription for tranexamic acid which I'm nervous about taking as it helps clotting but I am already passing huge clots.
The situation has got me down and I'm planning calling doctor tomorrow but going from previous experience they aren't usually interested in women's period problems!
Thanks all xx

Sparkless · 11/12/2020 14:49

Omg! I’m another one! So glad I found this thread.
I had the mire a coil removed approx 3 weeks ago was fine until my period arrived. The period from hell! I passed huge liver like clots the size of my hand for 8 days straight had to go to A&E and now I’m a wreck, on the tranexmic acid.l and bleeding eased off.
I only had it in 3 months got it taken out to try for a 3rd baby but now I’m worried about infertility!
I just wondered if any of you other ladies fully recovered from this and hormones return to normal??

I’m just quite scared at the moment.
Thanks I’m advance

Bmel · 13/12/2020 05:15

I'm so glad I found this! I had my mirena IUD taken out just 2 days ago because it had moved into my cervix only 2 weeks after getting it! I had gotten it because of abnormal/heavy bleeding. For the first two weeks I had no bleeding at all it was actually a very nice other than the cramping I was having.. Then the day after it was removed I started bleeding. I didn't think it off because I thought it was my body resetting itself. But the cramps were so bad and when I woke up the next day I had blend through my overnight pad in my underwear was soaked in blood! Never had that much blood loss with a period in such a short time even after childbirth! I completely freaked out. I can't believe no one told me this could happen! I'm now starting the mini pill for home and replacement I took the first one today and a lot of ibuprofen to help with the bleeding but it's still insanely heavy. Going to go in if it doesn't get any better by tomorrow.
