Tmi warning: heavy bleeding/clots after mirena removal

Hello all
Sorry for tmi but I am really worried as my Dr did not forwarn me about any of this. I had my mirena removed just over a week ago and last night I began bleeding excessively- to the point of soaking through pads every hour and going through to my clothes. I began losing lots of very large and solid clots too. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and wondered if this is something that can happen following mirena removal?
Thanks.

Been given tranexamic acid and got to go for a blood test to check my iron levels.

Apparently can happen especially if you had the mirena to combat heavy periods.

So there you go!

Hope you feel better having spoken to GP. Fingers crossed that the T. Acid helps relieve your symptoms.

MyBeloved · 20/02/2017 18:36

Thanks Groovster. Feel reassured and fingers crossed the TA helps!

Strongly feel doctors should warn women about this potential side effect upon mirena removal though as it would have had prepared me. The gp agreed.

I had my copper coil removed on Tuesday, the same day as starting my period. My periods are normally quite heavy anyway but I'm finding that I am passing an awful lot of clots and quite large ones too. I'm hoping that it doesn't go on too long.
I'm glad I found this thread and now know it's normal Smile

MyBeloved · 26/02/2017 00:34

Hi speak, mine was a mirena, which held back my periods. My gp seemed to think this was linked to the clot loss and heavy bleeding I experienced post removal. I stopped taking tranexamic acid 2 days ago and the bleeding has more or less stopped apart from a few bits and pieces but I feel dreadfully weak and nauseous. I'm due to have blood test to check my iron levels etc early next week. I'd suggest you get checked by your GP also. Hope you're feeling OK x

I had this with the Mirena whilst it was still in. I thought it had fallen out, heavy bleeding, clots. The coil was still in place but after a scan it was discovered that I had 2 fibroids. This was May 2016. The coil had worked well for 18 months up to that.

But I've been bleeding ever since, only Northisterone gives me any relief. I had an endometrial ablation last September which didn't work and I'm now on the waiting list for a hysterectomy- I'm 48.

MyBeloved · 26/02/2017 09:33

@bg2015 - how awful. Had you ever had fibroid or gynaecological issues before that? I'm so sorry Flowers

OP posts:
BG2015 · 26/02/2017 10:49

I've had prolonged and random bleeding since about 2009 but it wasn't heavy. I had my first Mirena in then, which stopped the bleeding - I just had a monthly brownish discharge but after a smear in 2013 the nurse couldn't find the threads so I was sent for scans and it had decided to move into my uterus!! They discovered the fibroids then

It was finally removed in Feb 2014 but after months of heavy bleeding I had my second one in during November 2014. It was brilliant until May last year.

How old are you?

MyBeloved · 26/02/2017 11:18

I'm mid 40s. History of heavy, prolonged bleeding and debilitating pain. Mirena was introduced to address this. Developed polyp and infections within months. Had it removed. Had these bleeding issues since - been around 10 days or so. I feel like nothing on earth. I wish I'd insisted on a hysterectomy which was the other option but the consultant talked me into mirena.

OP posts:
BG2015 · 26/02/2017 15:00

They do make you try lots of different options before the offer you a hysterectomy. I would push for one now. You could have 5-10 years of bleeding - go back to your GP and ask to be referred again.

I have a constant mild period pain which gets worse if I don't don't my Northisterone tablet, it's as though my uterus is ramping up to start pumping the blood out again. Shock I'm just sick of it now.

MyBeloved · 26/02/2017 16:35

Oh...I get that mild, constant period pain too! Have done for a number of years now. What is it?

I have had so much 'mucking about' done that I just want to leave my body alone. Mind you, I know that I won't be able to handle my periods and pain and so will soon be asking for a re-referral. Do you think the mirena directly contributed to your problems?

OP posts:
BG2015 · 26/02/2017 16:57

No I think the Mirena worked well for me, it kept my bleeding at bay for 6/7 years. I think my age and change in hormones, plus the fibroids changing have all contributed to the heavier bleeding.

The fibroids are what are causing my bleeding and also the cramping. The fibroids produce proteins that make blood vessels grow and expand so that more blood is produced.

speakfriendandenter · 28/02/2017 00:13

Thank you for the advice, luckily the bleeding and clots have settled down now. It didn't seem to cause too much tiredness thankfully. Hope you're feeling better and full of energy soon Smile

MyBeloved · 28/02/2017 16:21

Thanks for your replies. Got an appointment with .you consultant booked for the end of March so am going to speak to him about the hysterectomy then I think. I simply can't go back to having that pain and those periods as they were ruining my life.

Glad things have settled for you @speak

Well, it's day 3 of period number 2 after mirena removal. So far it's heavy but not quite as horrendous as period number 1 was. Going to see how the next couple of periods go before I go back to the gp to see about an ablation.

MyBeloved · 28/02/2017 19:13

Glad to hear it's not as awful as the first one watto. I don't fancy am ablation because it can make any future investigations very difficult- it closes the uterus so to speak. I think medics mess around with our bits far too much.

OP posts:
Watto1 · 28/02/2017 19:34

Does it? I thought it sounded less scary than a hysterectomy! Mind you, I am wishing for the menopause to hurry up! Unfortunately both Mum and Gran had periods until their late 50s. I'm only 42 so I may have a long waitSad

MyBeloved · 28/02/2017 19:37

Yes, for example, if you had an ablation then at some point in the future started getting unexplained bleeding, they would not be able to take a biopsy of the lining of the uterus because it would be a sealed cavity. That is my understanding. That worries me as a lifetime is a long time in which not to be able to have investigations should they be necessary.

Not sure if this will help or even if it's good advice, but I find when I have heavy clotting I take 1 nurofen in the morning and it seems to help somehow. Only take it for a couple of days but stops the large clots.

joannwitte · 14/10/2017 03:12

Hello, my name JoAnn(36) and Im a mother of three. I had my Mirena IUD for six months before I had it removed in June this year. I had a light period in July and thought everything was okay. My period started on time on august 18th but was very heavy with huge clots and hasn't stopped. I have had blood work done and it was normal except my hematocrit and hemoglobin was low. It is October 13th, 2017 and Im still bleeding. I hope it stops soon.

Jamie2017 · 07/11/2017 17:00

Hi, I removed my marina coil myself on Wed 1st Nov. Rather easy, no pain!! I hope you don’t mind me jumping in on this conversation!
So I removed mine last Wednesday evening. I had bright and dark bits of spotting for 2 days!! Then the weekend just gone had nothing, so had unprotected sex with my boyfriend!! Yesterday I felt sick all day and most of the night and a few cramps..!! I woke up this morning and had brown spotting??
Is this normal??

rosie39forever · 08/11/2017 13:51

Hi Jamie removing your own Mirena can be dangerous, can cause perforation and infection, I would strongly advise you go to your doctor and get checked out.

Bexterw21 · 11/11/2017 12:23

Had mine removed after 6 yrs so I could have it replaces with another for hrt with patches. Came out easy but they couldn't get the replacement In. So I was put on duo hrt pill. And tablets to stop bleeding while I waited for new appointment. 6weeks later different doc said I'd be better on patches, stop tablets that are stopping bleeds and see how I feel. As at 51 I could be through the menapause. 10 days later I feel lousy. Heavy bleeding, cramps ,back ache, tearful. It's like 6 yrs ago again 😕😢 what to do?

BeckyMae · 24/11/2017 20:19

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site but I needed advice on this too.
I had my mirena fitted 12th June 17 and had it removed 2 days ago (21st November 17) but had the implant fitted straight after.
My gp never told me about possible bleeding after post removal of coil and yesterday afternoon I just started bleeding very heavy Shock I bled constantly with the mirena hence why I couldn't stand it any longer. I've never bled this bad before and it was just pouring out Sad I phoned 111 who got me an appointment with the out of hours doctor but he was useless. Phoned gp today but they cannot get me in until next Tuesday. I've taken mefnamic and tran acid but it hasn't exactly helped.
Just wanted to know if this is normal? im 23 and it's completely worried me as I weren't expecting this. Not as bad today as yesterday but still pretty bad in comparison.
Any advice would be appreciated Smile

Ksmethurst · 02/12/2017 09:14

So I got the rod took out and same day the coil copper went in because I wanted no hormones!!! But it’s been over a month since having it done and I’m bleeding everywhere. I have to change my bad nearly every two hours. And when I wake up in the morning I have like clots of blood on my pad and when I wipe there’s loads of blood. I don’t know if this is normal?? But because it hurt getting put in I don’t want to go doctors to them to remove it. Also keep getting really bad cramps
