Tmi warning: heavy bleeding/clots after mirena removal

Hello all
Sorry for tmi but I am really worried as my Dr did not forwarn me about any of this. I had my mirena removed just over a week ago and last night I began bleeding excessively- to the point of soaking through pads every hour and going through to my clothes. I began losing lots of very large and solid clots too. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and wondered if this is something that can happen following mirena removal?
Thanks.

Bit late to the party but I am SO glad I found this thread !!! Had the mirena coil fitted in 2015 when I was 19 as no other contraception was working and my dr said the mirena 'worked wonders' on her other patients. It was all fine until August last year, when I randomly came on my period after 2 years of nothing and it just kept going and going. Fast forward to two days ago and this period still hadn't stopped, so my dr decided to remove the coil there and then. Not ONCE did she mention there would be any heavy bleeding at all, let alone the excessive amount of bleeding I am currently experiencing !!!! I got sent home from work as I was hysterically crying and had absolutely no idea what was happening, only managed to calm down when I found this thread. Any idea of when this will let up? And any advice on other methods of contraception apart from the pill and the coil?

Mine lasted for 3 days. Had the implant and had no periods since :)

When I had a Mirena removed I also had severe bleeding and was not warned about it. Apparently it's a withdrawal bleed. I couldn't leave the house. It was strange as I had no pain!I have always had heavy, painful periods.
I completely agree that women should be warned about it!

Am so glad you found this thread and it has reassured you.

All I can say is I ended up getting tranexamic acid from the doctor as I was becoming anaemic after bleeding like that for so long...so my advice would be that if it doesn't start to ease off after 3/4 days, visit your gp.

Can't advise on alternative contraception as I have now had a total abdominal hysterectomy!

Wishing you well Smile

Mirena coil removed 2 days ago at same time as smear test. I’m 46. It was 2nd coil and had Mirena for total of 7 years. Had it removed as I have gained 4 stone in total and I don’t have need for contraception at the moment. Back stiffness has reduced immediately. So far I have only had spotting and I am getting worried about this heavy bleeding. When can I expect it to start. Not really had any advice

So glad I found this thread! Had Mirena out a month ago, bled on and off since then but yesterday got a proper period and honestly, I once had a miscarriage that wasn't this bad. I'm off work today for another reason, don't know how I'd cope if I was in. I was given tranexemic acid by the doctor who removed it and I've taken that but not sure if it's helping. BTW for the woman who removed Mirena herself - my doc said mine came out far too easily and that that in itself was a sign it wasn't right for me - it was just like removing a tampon. Christ!!

By the way I'm 44, two kids, heavy periods all my life apart from around a year after each pregnancy. Mirena was supposed to sort that out but it left me spotty, fat, grumpy and still bleeding. I'm done now - going to request a hysterectomy.

I'm 41, had my Mirena removed 3 weeks ago after having it in for 5 years. Removal was fine, just had bleeding off and on for a week. On Saturday my period came and it's been a nightmare. Saturday's bleeding was ok but on Sunday morning I woke to what looked like a murder scene in my bed. It's day 4 and it's still so heavy. I'm going through a super tampon every 2 hours, feel so tired and as usual have such a bad migraine with it. I'm surprised it's like this though as for the whole 5 years I had the Mirena in I still bled, very regular every 28 days for 5-7days but only enough to have a regular tampon in. So I never thought I'd end up with one this heavy as I thought this happened to women who never really got periods while Mirena was in. Anyway at my appointment when I had it removed, my gyn said that if for any reason I get heavier than normal periods after 3 months she would do ablation. If that doesn't work I can have a hysterectomy. But I'm off to my doctor tomorrow as I'm going to need something for next month's period as I've looked at the date its due and I'm going on a cruise that day!!! I really don't want to risk bleeding like this while away and feeling so sick. Not sure what options there are to try and miss a period or calm it down for that month. All I can think of is the pill and to skip it.

I just found this thread (don't like using that expression after mirena coil removal hahaha). I had mirena out around ten days ago. I am fine and then, when not expecting , I get a flood of blood and clots. I am trying to take Norgeston (mini pill) , hoping it will help as I like to go swimming and not have to worry about sudden flooding. Did anyone find goin gonto the pill after helped?

This thread is very helpful because I was never told by the dr. to expect heavy bleeding, clots, cramping & emotional upset after removal of the IUD. At the time the Mirena was put in May 24, 2018, doctor also did an endometrial biopsy, Hysterectoscopy and D&C. I am 56 & because I hadn’t had a period in a year & suddenly started spotting a little bit the dr. said I needed all this. The Mirena was put in because of hormonal imbalance & to prevent build up in the lining which can lead to cancerous cells if the lining doesn’t shed. In the past I used oral progestin which also gave me many side effects. Because the IUD also gave me many side effects I couldn’t tolerate including break-through bleeding I had it removed June 7, 2018. To this day I’m still suffering with the heavy bleeding, clots, cramping. Has anyone ever had an IUD in for such a short time (15 days) not for the purpose of birth control and experienced the heavy bleeding, clots etc. ? How long did the bleeding etc. last?

I had my Mirena IUD removed on June 5 and started mini pill on June 7. I noticed random spotting with old, brown blood a few days after removal and figured that may be normal. Spotting continued until last week when a traumatic event caused significant stress and subsequently, or coincidentally, a heavy period with clots. I'm on day 4 of heavy bleeding. Good to know that I'm not the only one this is happening to; read about the Mirena Crash after removal and am worried for more side effects. Will check in with my doctor about T. Acid if the bleeding doesn't subside.

I so want my Mireya coil out, but I am fearful of this crash everyone speaks of, I don't want the thing in but I don't want the after effects either.
How long have you all suffered with the 'crash' following removal?

Hi I’m st my wits end, any advice please??? I’m 46 had marina put in for heavy periods but it wasn’t for me as I just spotted for the whole 8 months so had it removed. Continued spotting for first 10 days after removal but since then for the last week I’m having the period from hell which is not letting up, has this happened to anyone else and does it ever stop??!! I went to the hospital had a scan and all clear so they think it’s hormonal and given me tranexamic acid for 3 days but I haven’t taken it yet because of all the side effects and also I don’t want to do anything else that’s not natural! Do I ride it out and have faith in my body that this will stop? Always had regular periods before marina, never spotting just heavy ones. Any advice please????

Hi,I'm new here. I had the mirena removed yesterday and it hurt so bad i thought he was piercing me but he showed me the removed coil. I cried and I don't do tears. I felt e tremely light headed and sick and strong cramps. I had to bus it home. I've got a horrible black discharge but not much. I'm dry as a bone up there. I get thrush near enough all the time. I was wondering how long does this pain go on for?? It hurts as it did when it was in,the reason I had it removed. But I don't feel any better. I feel sick from the pain. My back is awful. I'm trying to breathe. Relax-inpossible!! Drink plenty etc. I walked for a cpl of hrs and it's made it worse. I'm 45 and I'm worried about menopause. How my body will react with the coil gone. For now its the pain that bothers me. Its Friday and i dont have any money or anyway to get to my local hospital. But with it only being a couple of days ago they'll prob say its normal and to give it longer. Im sure my docs hate me! Im in there a lot with other issues lol Ive not had any crazy bleeding. I'm just in a lot of pain with a blacklist discharge. Its not really coming down cuz I'm so dry. Any advice on coping with post coil removal. The docs or gynae don't tell you anything. No warnings or advice. You know like the after care letter you get after hospital ops. The mirena is a nasty piece of work. I know some benefit but the ones that don't really suffer. In the US they can claim against the company for various things. Not enough is done to inform us. Especially wtf is normal. What signs to watch for. You know general info. Sorry for this essay. I've no one to talk to about it.

Sorry your in such a bad way, I have no experience of having it removed, mine ha been in 4 yrs and I hate it. I feel bloated, I have put on weight and the headaches and migraines it gives me are phenomenal.
I want it out but I am dreading the repercussions- like what you are experiencing
Hopefully someone will be along shortly who can give you some advice on how to get through this bit Thanks

I had mine removed and I too am having very heavy periods with clots. I am using Depends "adult diapers" to help get thought this and it is making my days so much easier. Pads or tampons cannot do the job right now. I highly suggest using an adult diaper for these heavy periods.

Report
Tashaedu · 23/08/2018 03:26

Use adult diapers and ride it out. That is what I am doing. I change the diaper twice a day or 3 times a day if it's really bad and I shower twice a day to keep clean. I use Depends night flow and it works great.

So i has Mirena for a little over a year this time. Had my period like normal that ended on a Monday. Had my IUD removed that following Wednesday. Friday I started bleeding really heavy and clots the size of walnuts coming out. I am still bleeding like crazy. I bled through a tampon toilet paper, I was on the road, my underwear and pants in 45 minutes. I’m gonna call my dr today bc it’s been 4 days and I’m still bleeding like crazy. We’re TTC one last time but I’m bleeding so much we can’t.

I had an iud put in in May 2009. Had it removed oct 2013. Got pregnant Dec 2013. I don’t remember bleeding this bad. I have 3 other children right now and this is our last chance to have another bc my health isn’t the best to begin with. I never had any problems using the Mirena either times. But I have a blood clotting disorder that I clot too much. So the Mirena is the safest BC for me. I am just worried about this heavy bleeding and clots. I feel like I’m peeing on myself. I go to the bathroom and I can feel a steady stream of blood coming out like I’m actually peeing. It looks like a murder scene every time I go to the bathroom. How long will this last?

Report
Tashaedu · 27/08/2018 16:28

The bleeding lasted 10 days for me. It got light on the 8th day.

Tashaedu · 27/08/2018 16:29

Depends Adult Diaper really helped me and prevented messes. I changed it 2-3 times a day.

I bled heavily for 7 days then was prescribed trans acid, bleeding then subsided and stopped. I have now 28 days later started my normal period so hopefully I’m back to normal now. Marina just didn’t suit me.

I’ve always done fine when I had it in. Light to normal periods. Then Friday bam bleeding like crazy. Clots and super heavy bleeding. Huge clots and chunkseverytime I went to the bathroom. My dr prescribed me some medication today to hopefully stop it. Today is mild compared to this passed weekend.

Hi I am late to this post. I had my mirena removed on 21st August and still have my period now three weeks later. Had the clots and heavy bleeds but only had a small amount of pain with clots and that’s it. I used to double over in pain and have to get my husband to start the shower to ease it and clean up the mess. I feel weak and really tired and getting cramp all over my body. Bleeding is light now but I’m am wondering if I need to see my go to get the t-acid and bloods done to check my iron levels.
