Tmi warning: heavy bleeding/clots after mirena removal

Hello all
Sorry for tmi but I am really worried as my Dr did not forwarn me about any of this. I had my mirena removed just over a week ago and last night I began bleeding excessively- to the point of soaking through pads every hour and going through to my clothes. I began losing lots of very large and solid clots too. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and wondered if this is something that can happen following mirena removal?
Thanks.

Sorry I realise this post is old but just to say you've got to be v careful if loosing a lot of blood. My Mirena fell out - not sure when as bleeding v heavily at the time. Ended up in A&E having an emergency transfusion ( made me feel a lot better tbh) Anyway not sure what caused these problems yet - but I would say you are bleeding excessively for more than a day and feel weak/ light headed - get to A&E for blood test.

Well, it is pretty radical! It has worked for me though, yes...but was not without issues.

I just got my Mirena out about 4 days ago and was told I shouldn't bleed due to having been taking the pill a week prior. Today I had just finished work and was heading up stairs and had to randomly stop as I had a feeling like I was peeing my self (I felt like I lost control of my bladder) then when I got to the main room I realised I was bleeding extremely heavily. I ended up rushing home to shower and did not stop bleed with blood clots for at least 15 minutes in the shower. Tonight I have had a pad on and have bleed so much to fill up a pad and I have never done that before... The weird thing with this experience is I normally am in extreme pain but I have felt absolutely nothing with this experience. I pray the bleeding slows by morning as it's somewhat worrying as there have been minimal blood clots.

Bananayana, if it carries on please go to the gp as you may need tranexamic acid. Hope you are ok. Flowers

I had it exceptionally bad for 5 days and my blood levels dropped to around 60hp which is when I had transfusion. Just keep an eye on it. Transansamic acid will help.

Update on how things have been going. I ended up bleeding over night but just as if it was a heavy period. This morning right until tonight I had not bleed a drop but straight after my shower boom I had a handful of blood with no clotting and had to once again shower and wait for the bleed to subside. I have although experienced a bit of back pain, little energy and the start of very small cramping (almost can't notice).

I also do suffer from low iron levels so this is definitely not going to help.

I’ve had mine removed after having the Mirena in for three weeks and then coming down with infections and ending up on three courses of ab Sad
Getting pain (dull ache but woke me up last night) on left hand ovarian region for not right .. did other ladies experience pain like this after removal ? Bleeding not to bad...

Report
Bananayana · 03/11/2018 10:25

I had absolutely no problems with the removal but I did get BV (bacterial vaginosis) after it was put in. I also experienced cramping with out bleeding right throughout the time I had it in and also discomfort with my ovaries too(I also had a cyst removed when they put it in a d after about 2 months the ovary pain subsided). It sounds like because you only had the Mirena in for 3 weeks it seems your body was trying to adjust which in turn causes the pain and your ph balance in the vagina when out of wack causing infections.

If you keep experiencing pain/discomfort please see your GP :)

I'm over a year late, but this thread is still helping other women like me!

I got my mirena last june & since then I would bleed for weeks. I had an appointment in November ro check the placement which turned out to be fine & only had one or two very small fibroids so my Dr put me on birth control pills for 3 months to see if it would help regulate the bleeding but it didn't so I ended up getting it removed on 11/12. My cycle started maybe 4 days ago & I've been bleeding through super absorbent tampons within 2 hours & there's an alarming amount of clotting. It's not as heavy now but still some clotting. I figured it had to do with the removal but thought I'd google it before I called my dr in a panic. She also didn't warn me about the acne & I swear I had some weight gain even though I asked her about it when I got it removed & she said weight gain isn't normally a side effect. Hopefully my next cycle won't be as bad.

This is a little late but may help others. I had the mirena fitted at the age of 56 January 2018 after experiencing very heavy regular periods for a few years causing anaemia. Up until that time I took mefenamic acid and traxemenic acid to ease the cramps and heaviness. My periods would last 8-10 days on a 24-28 cycle. It was suggested perimemopause, no other symptoms other than extreme tired and headaches at times of periods. Bloods taken were shown to be all normal levels except iron levels being low so was advised by GP to have the mirena. I was sterilised when 34, so was more than willing to give it a go.
I did find it uncomfortable when fitted and nearly passed out, but I think that is just me, it really was over very quickly. Initially I felt good despite the normal period like bleeding for 2- weeks then intermittent bleeding and spotting with random days of nothing for the following 6-months. I had been forewarned it can take 6-8 months to settle down.
Over the next few months I had 2 light periods then nothing.so the mirena did do the job of sorting my periods.

Unfortunately their was a trade off, I experienced constant low grade headaches, an intermittent nauseous feeling and loss of appetite ( I actually did not feel hungry and could easily forget to eat, I did lose about 4 kgs, I am not very big at 56kgs. The one symptom I could not cope with though was the change in sensitivity and the inability to orgasm even though my libido was still there so this became both painful and frustrating. This is what finally took me to seek advice and the 1st Dr I saw treated it with concern and offered to refer me to a specialist or arrange to have the mirena removed. I opted for the latter as I thought that seemed the most obvious.

I had the mirena removed 5 days ago by the GP who had fitted it after having it for a year and advised to wait a few months to see what my now normal is. Removal was if anything a very weird sensation, for me not painful and must admit I felt relieved. Since then i have bled like having a normal period with some clots but I have been lucky so far as I have had no bad cramps. I am conscious I have an odour down there and it was something I noticed suddenly when the coil was removed, a strong odour once it was out though my GP did not comment so assumed this was normal.

I know it is early days but I realised I am without the headaches and haven't felt nauseous the past few days and so I am finding it easier to concentrate. I've yet to see whether I have sensitivity down there returned. The mirena coil seems to be a godsend for many and even for myself it had given me a break from the very heavy bleeding that I was experiencing, so it did do its intended job though for me like some others the negative side effects I experienced just became to much.
My GP was not overly happy that I wanted it out and said my symptoms were unlikely to be due to the mirena., after reading the many threads on here I am pretty sure they were. May be some of us are more sensitive to this hormone even though it is a low dose. I will now await to see what my normal is and though I feel a little apprehensive in case I get the heavy periods back, the initial Dr I saw reassured me that if they become bad again there are other meds that can help.
I think the best advice for anyone is to listen to your own body, and that we are very individual and experience different reactions. Even the same reactions can be a big thing to one person and not another, if it is interfering with your quality of life then try and do something about it. Wish everyone well 🙂

I had my mirena coil removed 5 days ago. First couple of days I had a relatively light period. Today however has been horrific, having to change every 30-40 mins ( I’m using super plus tampon & night time pads) passing large clots and cramps. I had the coil fitted as I’ve suffered with extremely heavy periods all my life and for me the coil was a god send, this is the second one I’ve had. Each time they are brilliant for 2 1/2 years then the bleeding starts again, I’ve bled more or less constantly for past 4 months. I just wanted to reassure those of you who are having a heavy period for the first time not to panic, it’s messy, unpleasant, painful but won’t last forever. I’ve decided not to have any hormone related medication and to try to find something more natural to get me through each month. Flowers

Well, I have recently had my second mirena removed (5 weeks ago). Not has a period since (apart from a few days spotting immediately after removal). I was having a quick google to find out if this was normal because I had a terrible time after getting my previous mirena removed . I found this thread and was surprised that I contributed to it! I have no recollection of that at all! Anyway, is it normal to have no bleeding at all for 5 weeks after removal? Last time it was a bloodbath for over a fortnight Sad. Very unlikely that I’m pregnant as dh has had the snip.

Hi guys, I just recently got my mirena out on Wednesday and I was OK until Friday /Saturday morning I started to bleed profusely with huge clots 😕 I only got the mirena put in after my last baby was born in 2016, it was my first use of contraception. I'm really worried about this blood loss and will it stop? Does any one know if its just the body resetting and has anyone gone back to normal after getting it removed?

I had my copper coil removed yesterday after 4 1/2 years. I remember the insertion being horrendously painful followed by horrible labour type pains as my body was trying to expel it - safe to say I was not looking forward to removal when the time came..! The coil itself took a good year or so to properly settle in, I remember thinking that my period pains would forever be extremely painful and heavy each month until I have the coil removed, however after a year or so, the pains did subside and it wasn't as severe.
The positives about having a copper coil are that I didn't have to worry about the hormones and for me it was so reliable, I would start my period on time every month. I did have spotting after sex for a few years but again this subsided, the doctor said that's completely normal.
I decided to get the coil removed as I was getting what seemed like BV after every period, bloated, discharge etc and I just decided that my body needed a break from this crazy little foreign object.
I was actually really scared about the removal because I remember the pain of insertion - I was told to have it out whilst on my period as that's apparently easier. The speculum part was no problem at all, the nurse did a little digging around for the strings which I didn't feel, and then pulled it out. I felt a period style cramp which was over in seconds, and it was out! Never felt so relieved!!!
As for post removal bleeding, I am already on my period so cannot tell if it's heavy from that or the coil removal, hoping things will settle down in a few days - I have no pain at all though.
These threads helped me so much through having the coil in and then out, so thank you for all your comments girls!xx

I am so glad I found this thread.. I had the marina coil fitted whilst in theatre for the removal of Endometriosis and I have never had pain like it, I thought it was to do with post op but I couldn’t sit down or walk. Once it was removed I felt so relieved I had it in for 3 weeks!!! However within 12 hours I started to bleed very heavy with a lot of clots to, I am in a lot of pain exactly the same as before my surgery!! Nobody mentioned this to me!!!
I didn’t even want the coil I asked for a hysterectomy but was told because of my age they didn’t even really want to do that so go down the coil route. I have suffered over 10 years of pain on a daily basis, I had hoped that the surgery was going to fix it and now feel like I am back at square one!!!

Grateful to find this thread, thanks girls. Had mine out 8 days ago under general anaesthetic, hysteroscopy and biopsy. They found a polyp in there too which they removed. Had all the bad stuff, cramps, headaches, acne, depression, zero libido or sensitivity, the list goes on. Couldnt wait to get it out, went to GP - strings had gone, went to a gynaecologist - sent me into contractions, booked in for surgery - finally out! Was worried about the bleeding and clotting until I found this thread, still going strong years after it was started! You've put my mind at ease and I hope each and every one of you are well now x
