This is a little late but may help others. I had the mirena fitted at the age of 56 January 2018 after experiencing very heavy regular periods for a few years causing anaemia. Up until that time I took mefenamic acid and traxemenic acid to ease the cramps and heaviness. My periods would last 8-10 days on a 24-28 cycle. It was suggested perimemopause, no other symptoms other than extreme tired and headaches at times of periods. Bloods taken were shown to be all normal levels except iron levels being low so was advised by GP to have the mirena. I was sterilised when 34, so was more than willing to give it a go.
I did find it uncomfortable when fitted and nearly passed out, but I think that is just me, it really was over very quickly. Initially I felt good despite the normal period like bleeding for 2- weeks then intermittent bleeding and spotting with random days of nothing for the following 6-months. I had been forewarned it can take 6-8 months to settle down.
Over the next few months I had 2 light periods then nothing.so the mirena did do the job of sorting my periods.
Unfortunately their was a trade off, I experienced constant low grade headaches, an intermittent nauseous feeling and loss of appetite ( I actually did not feel hungry and could easily forget to eat, I did lose about 4 kgs, I am not very big at 56kgs. The one symptom I could not cope with though was the change in sensitivity and the inability to orgasm even though my libido was still there so this became both painful and frustrating. This is what finally took me to seek advice and the 1st Dr I saw treated it with concern and offered to refer me to a specialist or arrange to have the mirena removed. I opted for the latter as I thought that seemed the most obvious.
I had the mirena removed 5 days ago by the GP who had fitted it after having it for a year and advised to wait a few months to see what my now normal is. Removal was if anything a very weird sensation, for me not painful and must admit I felt relieved. Since then i have bled like having a normal period with some clots but I have been lucky so far as I have had no bad cramps. I am conscious I have an odour down there and it was something I noticed suddenly when the coil was removed, a strong odour once it was out though my GP did not comment so assumed this was normal.
I know it is early days but I realised I am without the headaches and haven't felt nauseous the past few days and so I am finding it easier to concentrate. I've yet to see whether I have sensitivity down there returned. The mirena coil seems to be a godsend for many and even for myself it had given me a break from the very heavy bleeding that I was experiencing, so it did do its intended job though for me like some others the negative side effects I experienced just became to much.
My GP was not overly happy that I wanted it out and said my symptoms were unlikely to be due to the mirena., after reading the many threads on here I am pretty sure they were. May be some of us are more sensitive to this hormone even though it is a low dose. I will now await to see what my normal is and though I feel a little apprehensive in case I get the heavy periods back, the initial Dr I saw reassured me that if they become bad again there are other meds that can help.
I think the best advice for anyone is to listen to your own body, and that we are very individual and experience different reactions. Even the same reactions can be a big thing to one person and not another, if it is interfering with your quality of life then try and do something about it. Wish everyone well 🙂
