Week 1 of the 52 small changes challenge - all welcome

OddSocksHighHeels · 27/12/2015 01:42

So the aim is to make one small change a week over a year to keep it manageable based on a book called 52 Small Changes. I'll post each week with the new challenge and people can adapt to however it suits them.

Week 1 starting tomorrow (or today I guess as it's now after midnight) is to drink more water.

The book advises this method for working out how much you should drink: take your body weight in pounds and divide by two, that number is the amount of water you should drink in ounces eg you weigh 150lb so you should drink 75oz water per day. I can't quite follow this so I'm sticking with 1.5 litres a day as an aim.

Feel free to add fruit or veg or whatever if you don't like the taste of water by itself. I currently have a jug that I've added some raspberries and mint to waiting for me to drink tomorrow.

I will check in at the end of each day to update on my progress and keep myself accountable. I hope you all find it helpful too!

Here's to a healthier year Wine

I can see I'm a bit late to the party but small changes sounds like a manageable goal.
I'll start in the morning - having just drunk a lovely hot mug of sweet nutmeg milk to help me to sleep...switching off MN and putting the phone down would probably be wise too...

NotSoSkinnyNow · 29/12/2015 01:29

Another late joiner here. Travelling tomorrow, so may not manage the full quota, but I'm definitely in.
Does lemsip count? If so, I recon today's quota is covered Smile

MrFMercury · 29/12/2015 02:19

I managed 5pints Sunday and Monday so I'm happy with that start. Thing is though I down a pint at a time and really I need to find a slightly slower way to drink.
I'm another who needs to quit an excessive fizzy drinks habit. I've done so multiple times and yet it just comes back. I don't drink alcohol so end up replacing it with Pepsi max.

Fckup · 29/12/2015 02:42

I'm in, sounds like a brilliant idea

ICJump · 29/12/2015 06:05

comeagain it's called Waterlog. You can customise the glasses which is good. I measured my water bottle and took a photo and I can just tap on it every time I finish. It also pings a reminder every now and then

CishAndFips · 29/12/2015 07:04

I drank just over a liter so a fail here but it was better than yesterday so I'm pleased with that. I'm starting a bit earlier today so hopefully that will help.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 29/12/2015 09:44

Have drank a pint already today. It's a big celebration for me today (off to a 40th) but I will try and have a glass of water between each drink.

I managed my two litres yesterday which is more than I was aiming for. Today I've had almost nothing so I'd better crack on.

I managed nearly 2 ltr yesterday but haven't had a,water today, I'm still in holiday mode I think. Xmas Wink

RainbowDashed · 29/12/2015 11:11

Yesterday was dreadful, lots of diet coke and tea. 500ml of actual water. No alcohol though so will take that as a win.

Today so far I have had a milky coffee, a diet coke, a small cup of tea and 500ml water. I'm aiming for another 1.5l through the day. I'm at work which makes it easier, there is a water cooler convenientl placed right next to the entrance to the toilet Grin

TooShyShyHushHush · 29/12/2015 11:25

I managed my 2l yesterday.

Had a big glass this morning waiting for the kettle to boil but nothing since then so I'm going to get on it now.

I'm back to work next monday so hoping to get the 'peeing for England' stage over with before I start!

OddSocksHighHeels · 29/12/2015 13:40

I'm still only on one glass. I need to do better today.

RufusTheReindeer · 29/12/2015 13:55

I am aiming for at least 4 glasses a day

I know thats only a litre but baby steps, i am sure i can manage that and i need an achievable target, 8 glasses seems so daunting

OddSocksHighHeels · 29/12/2015 15:23

If 4 glasses works for you then aim for that. You can work up to 8 at a later date.

It's surprising how easy I've found it when I've put my mind to it. I'm somebody that can go days or weeks without water normally (which is bad) and live off coffee and Red Bull Blush

RufusTheReindeer · 29/12/2015 15:26

Same here Grin

Sansoora · 29/12/2015 15:42

Im doing fine and when I had an induction at the gym today they told me I was perfectly hydrated.

Not that drinking water is a hardship to me as I have to given where I live. But the last few weeks, its cooler now, I'd kind of eased up a bit and was getting into bad habits.

Back at work today and it went ok with the water and the mince pies and the chocolates.

vvviola · 29/12/2015 18:29

I've managed a litre today so far, which isn't so bad - certainly better than normal. I'm aiming for at least another half a litre before the end of the day.

Was tempted to buy the book on my kindle, but I share a kindle account with DM, and she's likely to give me a hard time about it (she had a stroke in May, and while she is recovering really well, she appear to have lost her brain:mouth filter and things she would previously have just roller her eyes at, she can now be quite blunt and hurtful about - and I'm at my limit for now). So I'll just follow along here instead. Smile

OddSocksHighHeels · 29/12/2015 18:39

I'm at a litre now as well. I don't know why I'm finding today harder than the last two but I'll do it.

I think I'll have wine later as well so I should probably drink even more water.

OP posts:
gingercat02 · 29/12/2015 18:56

I've had 3 pints of water, and 3 mugs of coffee. Going out for tea shortly so there will be wine involved. Will try to squeeze in another pint before bed. I'm peeing my life away

RufusTheReindeer · 29/12/2015 19:14

I am on my 4th or 5th glass

Yay me!

OddSocksHighHeels · 29/12/2015 19:16

You've exceeded your goal then rufus well done!

Yes the peeing is ridiculous. This gets better right? I might need to install a TV in the bathroom otherwise Grin

OP posts:
RosieposiePuddingandPi · 29/12/2015 19:32

So far today I'm almost at 1.5 litres so that's decent effort but I'm glad I'm not the only one who's constantly peeing!
I suppose all the walking up and down to the bathroom counts as extra exercise though right?
