Week 1 of the 52 small changes challenge - all welcome

OddSocksHighHeels · 27/12/2015 01:42

So the aim is to make one small change a week over a year to keep it manageable based on a book called 52 Small Changes. I'll post each week with the new challenge and people can adapt to however it suits them.

Week 1 starting tomorrow (or today I guess as it's now after midnight) is to drink more water.

The book advises this method for working out how much you should drink: take your body weight in pounds and divide by two, that number is the amount of water you should drink in ounces eg you weigh 150lb so you should drink 75oz water per day. I can't quite follow this so I'm sticking with 1.5 litres a day as an aim.

Feel free to add fruit or veg or whatever if you don't like the taste of water by itself. I currently have a jug that I've added some raspberries and mint to waiting for me to drink tomorrow.

I will check in at the end of each day to update on my progress and keep myself accountable. I hope you all find it helpful too!

Here's to a healthier year Wine

Hi, a bit late to the party but may I please join in?
I'm sitting on my hands to stop myself from buying the book as I know it would mean I would race ahead and then give up - this way, the element of surprise each week will hopefully keep me motivated Grin and also in line with my ny-resolution to be more frugal

OddSocksHighHeels · 02/01/2016 12:19

I failed yesterday for the first time but I'll do it properly today! 500ml so far.

New week starts tomorrow for those that started with me so I'll add a new thread for week 2 and link it later on when I've got more time.

Today I will be better on the water front - and the Meds!

quirkychick · 02/01/2016 12:46

I try to keep a glass of water on the go while at home. I have one next to my bed during the night. Could do with taking a water bottle out and about with me, as I only really do this in warm weather. I do drink green tea with mint at home in the cold weather, and often a camomile tea at night. I think cold water is not so appealing in the very cold. Luckily, I'm not good at drinking fizzy drinks, as I'm not that keen.

Re the Fitbit, I haven't actually walked much as recuperating, but I have definitely been overestimating on myfitnesspal. I have once hit 5,000 steps and almost today too. I will definitely be walking much more next week when the children are back at school as the school run is 20 mins fast walking. It will be interesting to see what it is tracked at.

Thanks for that AtSea. Jeez, I'll be peeing for England BlushGrin

FiveShelties · 02/01/2016 15:02

I downloaded 'Hydro' - looks like fun, does graphs, reminders, alarms etc - all I have to do is drink the water. Smile

abetterhairbrushisneeded · 02/01/2016 17:22

We make glasses of water with slices of lemon at night. OH sips at his through dinner and whenever he gets up in the night but mine sits all night to steep so I start the day with a tall glass of lovely lemony water. I've worked out that I need 6 of these glasses according to the equation. That's been helpful to work out although I know soon I will forget how may glasses I've had in any given day! I stop by 7 pm as otherwise I would definitely be up all night.

OddSocksHighHeels · 02/01/2016 18:30

1.5 litres done Smile

I'm off to start a new thread, I'll come back and link when it's done.

Urgh I'm about a week behind here. I have ordered two of those infuser bottles to take to work with me. Planning to stuff in some frozen berries and sliced cucumber or lemon and lime. I really need to drink more water as I just forget to drink, then wonder why I feel dreadful. I also have dodgy sinuses and drinking lots of water is supposed to help. Crap on the sleeping front too so will be interested in that!

AtSea1979 · 02/01/2016 22:39

Another rubbish day of only having 500ml, I doubt I'll get much more in when I go back to work either.
Don't worry about being a week behind, there will be some weeks when you already do what it suggests so you can skip forward a week.

I manages about 2l again today. I met a friend for lunch and ended up drinking 2 pots of tea, so I'm bouncing off the walls with all the caffeine! I've been drinking decaf for the last couple of months adand didn't realised it would make such a difference.

RattieOfCatan · 03/01/2016 09:46

The sheerbalance assessment isn't really needed, it's very basic and you probably already know how you're doing (if you're really honest with yourself Grin )

I'm managing a good amount of water every day, but also a rather worrying amount of wine Hmm

vvviola I'm noticing myself doing other things too, but it's not entirely down to this challenge, I have been trying to make small changes for a while and am more concious of things I'm doing now.

I joined habitica before Christmas and I find that the dailies usually get done, I did have a break over Christmas but I'm back on it now. It's a glorified to-do list. You have your habits to track, your to-dos and your dailies. You also have a little character who you have to keep healthy by doing those to-dos Grin And you can buy them armor and level up. I'm a bit of a geek at heart Grin

I'm starting to use my fitbit again, if anybody wants friends on there give me a shout Grin I have the second one from the most basic, I use it on-and-off but intend to use it more.

Sirona · 03/01/2016 10:41

Got my 1.5l done yesterday.

Took off my make-up last night and kept catching a look of myself later on thinking something was off. It was only when I was brushing my teeth I realised my skin looks fab Wink I'd noticed my rosacea had calmed down majorly but it's all glowy and plumped up looking. First time ever. Even when I quit drinking and smoking I lamented how it didn't improve my skin.

Really need this sleep one now, we are all in bad late night habits.

Allgunsblazing · 03/01/2016 11:00

My skin is so much better too! But I also noticed I feel less tired in the afternoon if I drank properly!
It might also have something to do with the retinol A oil I started using ( twice a week) and the fact that I am better at moisturising.

vvviola · 03/01/2016 11:12

Rattie I just joined Habitica! And have spent 10 minutes playing with it instead of actually doing stuff. Looks brilliant Grin

RattieOfCatan · 03/01/2016 11:26

vvviola It's working for me :) I get somewhat addicted to checking things off on my dailies but I don't use the habits bit as much as I could do.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 03/01/2016 18:55

Doing ok wirh the water. Must learn to accept that it's not a good idea to do any I've missed at 10 pm when I realise though. ..

MrsJorahMormont · 03/01/2016 19:16

Is that Habit thing an app or a website?

RattieOfCatan · 03/01/2016 20:42

MrsJorah Habitica is a website but there is an app as well, I use both but prefer the website. They sync though so you can use both seamlessly :)

margaritasbythesea · 04/01/2016 07:44

I am going pretty well too although too much wine needs to be cut out here. Skin looks crap because of it. (toughens non existent resolve)...

MrsJorahMormont · 04/01/2016 12:04

Thanks rattie I will have a nosey Smile
