I'm not sure why Brexit is being blamed for an immigration crisis.

Sunak spending £400 billion during COVID has pushed the national debt to dangerous levels. The Conservatives have attempted to use immigration to increase GDP and prevent the GDP to debt ratio spiralling out of control.

GDP has barely moved, so it's been a total failure and has impacted GDP per capita.

We need skills and labour shortages to drive up wages in those sectors. That will result in people upskilling / changing sectors. The jobs market is flexible and wages will naturally resolve these problems.

Before Tony Blair opened the food gates there were stories in the press of people with PhDs retaining as plumbers because they were earning £80k+ (which was a lot of money in 2002). Then the Polish plumbers arrived and wages collapsed, so British people didn't bother entering the profession.

Mass immigration may have been good for those people building property empires, such as Tony Blair and his wife, but they've not been good for whole sections of British workers.

This was pretty much the only possible result once they'd won. For all his talk of "Norway" and Boris' ridiculous claims that we'd obviously still have all the same rights as before. It's just that people were too stupid to see didn't bother to look at the inevitable outcome. Don't forget, it was all "Project Fear"...

For you it was project fear. To others it was hope.
And there you go calling people stupid. There is just no need.

Ah, I see the level of thinking we're dealing with now.

Because if you care about the people, you would spend taxpayer billions on making things better for them, investing in infrastructure to make everybody's lives better etc..

Rather than giving out massive contracts to your donors, and in Rishi's case your family, say...

Sneering much? and for all I have never voted Tory and don't approve of Rishi's policies, I don't think he's got his fingers in the till like the other Tories.

You seem to think everything would be rosy if we had mass immigration and massive investment in public services, but no-one is offering that, not even at this election.

I will be voting Reform as a protest against mass immigration. In 2022, net immigration was 700,000 (not counting illegal immigrants). It’s insane. To house that many people we’ll need to build three new Manchesters. Where?? You can hardly move as it is. The traffic in my home town is beyond endurance. In fact, I hardly go out anymore. I wouldn’t bother travelling to a local beauty spot on a sunny weekend, for example, as I couldn’t face the crowds and queues. My local woods have been hacked into to build a massive new estate, and a second massive estate is being built at the other end of the village. There is a road near me known locally as ‘the long road’ because it’s pretty much dead straight. The traffic on that road is dreadful. One evening last summer it was bumper to bumper for three miles. No road works, no accidents, just sheer volume. We’ve just heard that developers are going to build 800 new homes on that road. So that will be a thousand or more extra cars on top of the ones already choking it up. It’s unbearable NOW. And no matter how many of these ghastly rabbit hutches they jam on top of one another, it’s never enough. We always need more, more, more.

I feel like I’m being suffocated. There are too many people squeezed onto this little island, it’s as simple as that. And it’s massively impacting our quality of life. However useless the Tories have been at controlling immigration, Labour will be worse. If Labour win, you can kiss goodbye to the green belt, that’s for sure. This problem isn’t going away. The world’s population has exploded over the last century. In 1900 there were a billion humans. By 1960 that had trebled to three billion. It’s now eight and is set to peak at ten billion by mid-century, right in the middle of a climate crisis.

Edited

We're terribly overpopulated.

And there you go calling people stupid. There is just no need.

But I've been, inevitably, proved correct.

So, yes, it was stupid. I'm fed up of trying to pander to stupid people's feelz, in order to help them help themselves...

Maybe read up on the Dublin Protocol?

Maybe since you are so superior in every way, you'd be able to tell us how many people we returned to the EU under the Dublin agreement prior to Brexit?

Feelz? And calling people stupid again. It is nothing to do with feelings. I’m sorry you can’t understand other people’s views. They don’t align with yours but to start name calling says more about you than it does the ‘stupid’ ones

I'll ignore the straw man argument as it doesn't deserve comment.

However, Rishi's wife's wealth, has increased by over £120 million in the last year, mainly due to his government giving umpteen contracts to her company, Infosys. (Which, by the way, is still trading in Russia.)

I'm pretty sure that there's a word that describes this...

A uk citizens coming back to live in this country after years abroad has to wait 3 months before being allowed to claim benefits.

How is this right when illegals get benefits immediately????

Stop the boats.

Enter the country legally with a job waiting for you.

ThisOldThang · 04/06/2024 19:54

I voted to leave because I thought there was too much risk attached to staying in the EU.

The stated goal of the EU is the abolition of the nation states of Europe via 'Ever Closer Union'. The EU is fundamentally undemocratic and shows no signs of ever becoming democratic. I can't see how it could even function if it were democratic because all the poorer countries would vote en mass for the richer countries to bankroll them.

Abolishing the UK and being absorbed into an unaccountable supranational organisation seems pretty fucking reckless to me, but I must be thick for actually bothering to think about such things.

Whenever I've tried to discuss things with remain voters, they've been completely ignorant of how the EU is governed (e.g. they think the EU parliament is the equivalent of the House of Commons making laws, rather than the House of Lords rubber stamping laws). The average Remain voter seemed to think that supporting the EU is just what nice people do. The economics of the single market escape them - e.g. they're ignorant of the fact it's only a single market in goods and not services, which the other nations had no intention of ever changing because Britain is so good at services and would have put their domestic companies out of business (in a similar fashion to how their manufacturers put ours out of business).

Unless you are a far right racist. Yes it would be a very bad idea.
Apart from anything else Reform isn't a democratic political Party it is a limited company Farage owns 53%. He can make himself leader and do whatever he wants. He supports Trump and previously said he wasn't going to stand as an MP because he wanted to help Trump become president again. He has changed his mind now because it suits him.

The habitual residency test was introduced to assure people were actually coming over to work and not to just claim benefits.
As the uk was still part of the eu, uk residents were included too.
Illegal immigration is different, the get NASS support until their asylum application is decided

ThisOldThang · 04/06/2024 19:59

Who gives a shit if Reform are a ltd company. People keep going on about it as if it matters.

Sunak was made leader of the Conservatives without a vote by the membership.

The only vote that matters is the General Election.

that amount of money could help a lot of people

My principles are my bond, unlike any political party in the world.

FiveFoxes · 04/06/2024 20:02

I don't want my Mum cared for by poorly paid and unskilled foreign or British care workers.

Care work needs to become a profession which is funded and valued.

Mass immigration isn't working - we're just stuffing health and care work with people who don't care. It is a short term stupid policy and I was pleased to hear the LibDems with a minor attempt at a solution. The other parties appear to be ignoring it.

Stopping immigration isn't the solution, but encouraging it isn't the solution either.

Farage is a prick.
