I'm sorry to hear about your situation, @cheninblanc. I am trying to help/advise a student of mine (and family) in a very similar situation and it's so frustrating for everyone to be completely at the mercy of some organisations which seem heartless and/or incompetent. A different student only had their offer confirmed at about 6 pm yesterday, so there are things still working through the system.

tryingmybest13 · 20/08/2022 07:39

@PhotoDad Sorry to hear this re your student. The whole point of us getting A level results when we do is so those decisions can be made by the 17th and UCAS updated for the 18th. I know some places end up still being pending decisions when UCAS opens but I really think it is not good unless there are solid reasons why (e.g. certain course with waiting lists, particular student circumstances) : and not because they are fishing around with the perhaps some else will come along via Clearing.

Benjispruce4 · 20/08/2022 07:39

Thanks all . Hope those that were also having difficulties get sorted. Sorry I haven’t got involved, just not enough headspace.
So do I need to contact Student Finance to update which university? Anything else apart from accommodation?

ealingwestmum · 20/08/2022 07:43

I have no words Chenin as to how Falmouth have treated your family.

Benji, hope the great outcome on NT resulted in a good night’s sleep!

PhotoDad · 20/08/2022 07:47

@tryingmybest13 That's what frustrates me, and 99% of universities are great. Let's just say that (in my student's case) certain ancient institutions decide to follow their own completely opaque processes which don't mix nicely with clearing.

tryingmybest13 · 20/08/2022 07:48

@PhotoDad Exactly!

Yup, to change the Uni that they are sending the fees too and getting confirmation of enrolment (for loan if taking up).

Just to avoid any delays at start of term.

Term times might be different, best to check if you can/ had your head around previous dates.

I'm the kind of person that likes to know everything and do my research (I'm great to go on hols with). Regrettably we'd done so much research on Dd first choice. It's a little bit hard to get my head round and think Cardiff instead of Southampton.

New thread linked below for when needed. Please do stick around all. It is a general support thread for those that fall in this age bracket regardless of gap years, work, starting uni etc

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Thanks for that info re the Network railcard. I’ve got one & hadn’t realised it went out that far. Useful to know if I get the train to see ds1 in Bath.

@Benjispruce4 So glad to hear it is sorted now. NTU is very popular with kids in my area.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 08:22

I'm on the train ticket research job this morning. MIL is convinced you can only have a Senior bus pass OR Senior Rail ...I'm off to investigate .

There are lots of railcard options @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee , I have a Network railcard which is only for the SE, got it on the trainline offer a few weeks ago. DS doesn’t need one I don’t think as Cirencester is a long way from any stations and they don’t connect well with down here.

I have posted on the other thread but just came back here to say to @cheninblanc I’m so sorry your DD has been treated so badly. Wishing you and her all the very best.

EquallyDivided · 20/08/2022 08:31

Sorry, just scrolled up and seen you know about the network railcards, these threads move faster than I can keep up with at the moment!

Northumberlandlass · 20/08/2022 08:31

Morning all,
We had a lovely family meal out last night & today we are making lists!! DS is working Mon & Tues then off to Leeds Festival, after that he’s working again so we don’t have much time to do stuff.

It appears that some of his mates are still waiting for BTEC results to be provided to Uni’s so offers haven’t been firmed, which seems very stressful. Thankfully most Uni’s are holding their offers.

DS is going to a local Uni, still moving out …which I’m not thinking about yet…

GoldenRuby · 20/08/2022 08:36

Excellent news @Benjispruce4, so pleased for your DD. Now keeping my fingers crossed for a positive outcome for @cheninblanc

PaddingtonPaddington · 20/08/2022 08:36

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee if you’re on Facebook there’s a group called ‘parents of students at Cardiff university’. Although DD not going to Cardiff uni I joined for any useful info on Cardiff

Thanks @PaddingtonPaddington ! I've been looking at the Unite halls and saw some were reserved for RWCMD ...they look lovely 😍

With DD1 she got the HSbc ac that offered £100 cash as I’d already bought her a railcard the year before. I’ll do the same for DD2 as she’s rather have the cash I think. The overdraft wasn’t used until her last year.

DD is all booked in to Unite Severn Point (not far from the Taly halls I think).

craggyrat · 20/08/2022 08:46

Glad you’ve got sorted @Benjispruce4 - we know a few who have gone to NTU and have done really well. @cheninblanc - awful situation. Really hope you get sorted very soon.

NCTDN · 20/08/2022 08:47

@cheninblanc i really hope everything is sorted soon Flowers

Heifer · 20/08/2022 08:50

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 15:28

@Heifer can I pick your brain for a friend. DD failed to get any offer for medicine….. until Nottingham phoned and offered her a place during results pick up yesterday?!?! .

we all cried it was amazing…..

How does accommodation work?

Because she wasn’t going she didn’t look round - know the place well so suggested they drive up for a first look then less daunting when she starts!

Sorry for the late reply. What great news for your DDs friend. DD has booked accommodation on Campus, which is catered (all catered on Campus). I think I've read somewhere not recommended for medics as catered times may not suit them. There is a lot of accommodation just off campus though (literally across the road). I'm not sure how many places left though as Nottingham had an early application for accommodation and it was first come etc..

Hope she gets it all sorted.

crazycrofter · 20/08/2022 09:25

Great news @Benjispruce4 , I’m sure she’ll absolutely love it there! @cheninblanc wishing you all the best and I hope things get sorted soon.

Thanks for the railcard info @Piggywaspushed , dd got hers last night. I think she’ll go for Nationwide as they give the most cash! The overdrafts look decent too!

@Fiddlersgreen yay for Leicester! If you have any accommodation questions let me know, as it hasn’t changed too much since I was there, from what I saw when we did the open day. It’s a cheap place to live too!

crazycrofter · 20/08/2022 09:28

@Fruitygal we spent a long time looking at Nottingham accommodation. Whilst Broadgate Park is right next to the campus, it’s actually a long walk to the actual teaching buildings and even further to the hospital. There is also quite a lot of accommodation near the Jubilee campus. It’s a long walk between the 2 campuses but there’s a free shuttle bus which we tried out on the offer day. There’s also a gym on the Jubilee campus. Until dd decided to go catered, we had pretty much decided to do the cheap self-catered accommodation by Jubilee as it seemed better value. Nearer town too.
