We've arrived on holiday and there is still nothing on my daughters ucas. It's still in waiting. Today when we called they said a decision would be by tonight but I fully expect its now not going to happen at all over the weekend and likely a no anyway. They'd have called were it good news. To say I am upset is an understatement, not at the no as that's life as and she has a plan for next 12 months, but at the unnecessary waiting and promises of later today two days running, I can't believe we have been treated like this. I'm on the edge of tears and my poor daughter just feels so dreadfully flat. If its a yes the moment has gone anyway, everyone's been out and celebrated and she hasn't. My experience of university now is so poor I'd be tempted to discourage my 2nd daughter even applying, what's the point. Right now I hate ucas and I hate Falmouth university for putting us through this, a flat out would've been so much easier and my dds state of mind is so low I'm going to have to pull out all I can to pick her back up from this. To add insult to injury school have posted all over social media that everyone student who wanted a uni place got one - imagine reading that and not even knowing what decisions been made. They have ruined what should've been a happy time even if she got a no as we've spent the last 2 days on edge

Dreadful @cheninblanc 🙁 Flowers Hope you have pointed out - also on social media - that the school’s boast is, to put it politely, inaccurate.

We went through the mill with my DD in algorithm year. Like your DD she ended up with no university place (but was at least put out of the misery of waiting fairly quickly). She was going to take a year out anyway, so reapplied later, and is now happily starting her second year at Aberystwyth (Physical Geography). I’m sure it’ll all work out for your DD, whatever she ends up doing.

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 19:02

@cheninblanc Dreadful! They might still get back to you tonight because staff will work quite late - but they are woefully late for your DD - they should have made a decision by now. I hope you can try to enjoy your holiday.

ProggyMat · 19/08/2022 19:06

I should be used to how quickly ‘our Corona Cohort’ threads move but Lord!
Keeping everything thing crossed that those still caught up in clearing etc are sorted soon! 🍀💐

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 19:09

Chenin that is really shit. Poor you, poor dd. Hope you have the nicest weekend you can.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 19:15

Did you need a voucher code for that @Piggywaspushed ?

Isthisjustnormal · 19/08/2022 19:32

Oh @cheninblanc how incredibly frustrating for you both. I really, really hope you and dd manage to switch off a little this evening. Do keep us updated.

Zott · 19/08/2022 19:43

@cheninblanc dreadful!

DS was offered his 4th option for halls accommodation. He will be sharing a bathroom with 5 others 🤣. It was take it or leave it so we took it. I wouldn’t mind but it’s not cheap (over £7k) but it does have a big meal plan attached. We read some of the reviews and there were a few “don’t live here”. It’s going to be interesting.

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 19:51

@cheninblanc this is terrible, your DD’s been treated appallingly and I’m not surprised it’s put you off university for your other DC. 💐

If it's any consolation my ds's gf has just left Falmouth after her first year and transferred to another city. She really didn't have a great experience there and was glad to leave.

whatsnext2 · 19/08/2022 19:58

@singingstones
still quietly here 😊. DD did well, and happily is into Reading.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 19/08/2022 20:00

Oh, chenin, that is so frustrating and unreasonable.
They just need to pull their finger out and give you a response either way.
Some clearing lines are open tomorrow morning, I believe, so it may yet happen this weekend, but I hope you can find a way to enjoy your holiday regardless - you and DD definitely deserve it.

NotSorry, what course is your DS doing, and which accommodation was he in last year?
DD is about to start English & film.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 20:35

Thank you @whatsnext2 👋

Thank you for the link Piggy

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 20:36

@Piggywaspushed @NotSorry
think DS was just planning to open the Santander account if they still do the railcard? Or is there a better bank we should be looking at?

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 20:37

Thanks @Fonty good to know others are happy there.

it just all feels a bit rushed after all the researching and comparing and the open days and everything now it seems he’s picked a uni out of thin air

Don't do what we did and delay getting the railcard. We thought he should get it when his existing one expired, then realised his code had expired and he could not get another!

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 20:42

Ooh thanks for the tip @Monkey2001 will be sure to get it straight away if we go down that route

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 20:43

We used Nationwide because its best for overdrafts.

sofakingcool · 19/08/2022 20:43

Stressed out house here. DS's Uni haven't accepted his clearing offer yet on UCAS so he's been unable to arrange accommodation. Keep hearing on the grapevine that there's very little accommodation left - all catered options which he doesn't want Sad

He was on such a high yesterday, haven't seen him so happy and carefree for ages and now it feels a bit flat.

I don't understand why it's taking so long to to accept his offer, he put it on there at 3pm exactly yesterday - the time clearing started - and I've heard of loads of students who did it later and they were signed off this morning and now have everything sorted.

Just feels all a bit frustrating!

mango0 · 19/08/2022 20:52

I've had a little break from the thread since yesterday because I was feeling very overwhelmed and emotional.

I'm pleased to see most DC now have a destination they're happy with. I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a terrible time @cheninblanc !

Thank you for your support on here yesterday @Monkey2001 . I'm sorry to hear you DS didn't get a place for Newcastle this year, but also relieved for him that it wasn't down to his own admin error! It sounds like you both have a very pragmatic approach to the situation and a good plan to make the most of the year - likely traits that will make him an excellent medic I'm sure.

I'm going to have another little moan about Birmingham's decision regarding dd, because I really liked it for her, and then I'm moving on because she is very happy to be going to Lancaster. So her offer for Maths was AAA (=144 points), she got A*ABC (=176 points), and the Astar and A were Maths and Further Maths. Her mark in Maths was excellent and her mark in Psychology was 11 below the grade boundary for an A, not super close I know but it seems crazy to me that she could have got 100 less marks than she did in Maths and only 11 more in Psychology and got a place! It just seems a weird decision on their part. I'm sure they have their reasons, and I will begrudgingly say they probably know more than me on the matter 😆

@horrificbiology Has your dd heard about her accommodation allocation at Lancaster yet? Dd is in a whatsapp group with a few other students she met on a study day there, they had it as their firm choice and have pretty much all heard (and are all happy). I'm hoping dd won't have to wait too much longer, and I also hope as an insurance choice student (rather than clearing) she'll still get a place on campus, but also making her heart isn't set on it. She's lucky that Lancaster guarantees all first years accommodation. Actually, Lancaster overall seems strong on student accommodation, plenty of reasonably priced options in the city for after first year it seems.

KingscoteStaff · 19/08/2022 21:04

@mango0 There were loads of Lancaster people on the DS's 2020 thread and the accommodation was always being praised! I remember being envious as DS made his way down his Durham corridor to his shared bathroom with very limescaled taps!

horrificbiology · 19/08/2022 21:25

@mango0 yes we have the accommodation paperwork now need to fill in and pay the deposit.

horrificbiology · 19/08/2022 21:32

@Monkey2001 she is in Cartmel College.

NotSorry · 19/08/2022 21:51

@Alsoplayspiccolo he was in Jarrett Hall and he’s doing maths - the accommodation allocation was a shit show last year too - we waited 2 weeks after results (kept chasing) all his buddies were getting rooms and he kept getting fobbed off. In the end I made him ring them and not get off the phone until someone gave him a proper answer. Turns out there was a computer blip and even though we applied correctly by the deadline he basically wasn’t in the system. The person on the phone said “oh yeah we know there’s a computer problem but we don’t know who it has affected until they phone up” 😡

Anyway Jarrett Hall is actually post-grad accommodation but I think they had a lot of these “computer blippers” and had to use half of it for under-grads.

He is now moving into a house in Selly Oak which is where Jarrett Hall is anyway just a little further, as he liked it that side

@Fiddlersgreen there didn’t seem to be any decent bank deals around last year so he just stayed with NatWest who he had a child account with. Not sure if that was a knock on effect of covid. I got him the railcard through the Tesco points and it’s been well worth it so if any banks are offering it I’d grab it. He goes to visit his girlfriend at her uni so it really helps with the cost.
