@isthisreallyitoh my DS is going into his 2nd year at UEA - I can try to answer any of your questions (or DM me if you prefer). He had a brilliant 1st year and can’t wait to get back to Norwich

Thank you v much. DS a bit of a party animal and concerned about how much life there is in Norwich? What might a typical
night out look like?

singingstones · 19/08/2022 16:14

@ChristopherTracy
Snap - sounds like my DS will be living close to yours!

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 16:18

Norwich has loads of pubs . It's vibrant. There are two unis which always helps. Good arts scene .

I'm from Glasgow so am biased enough to say its an amazing place but potentially much more overwhelming for an 18 year old.

<waves> Has yours received an email yet re the accommodation? DS is at work so cant ask him.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 16:29

@ChristopherTracy

He hadn't when I asked him this morning - he's back in the pub now, two consecutive 18th parties today and tomorrow so I have been told we can start getting organised on Monday. So much to do..

I've seen the email from Nottingham and that is really helpful, lots of info. I think I might have his Broadgate login somewhere so might have a look and see if we are supposed to be doing anything. I can't remember when the deposit is due for instance.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 16:42

@isthisreallyitoh yes ds1 has just finished at UEA if you want to ask anything. I haven't read every post if you've already asked questions. I think Norwich has more pubs than most cities. I would say it's a quieter city than a lot places. It's our nearest city.

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 16:42

Singing and CT, no news on Nottingham accommodation yet. But I wasn't expecting it yet. End of next week I assumed.

crazycrofter · 19/08/2022 16:54

@Oblomov22 @singingstones @ChristopherTracy i read on the website that a deposit has to be paid by 7th September I think?

Dd has only just got back from a friend’s (she was out late last night) and is also going to an 18th tonight, so we can’t do uni admin just yet. I really want to get everything sorted before we start packing up the house to move.

DS likes overwhelming though! He had his heart set on a city, Glasgow feels a long way away though. Aware he may be one of a few English students as well, although not sure this bothers him.

isthisreallyitoh · 19/08/2022 15:58

Love this! Just tried it. He picked UEA and shrugged his shoulders 😂

I said how did you feel when you picked it? How would you have felt if it was Strath? He just said I can’t decide - I feel the same about both.

aaaargh!!! 😂

Oh noooooo! I thought that might work! 🤣

Delphigirl · 19/08/2022 17:05

@isthisreallyitoh
ok let’s try this. Pro con list with answers to relevant questions like:

does he love sunshine/get depressed in the winter? go to Norwich.

does he want cool nightclubs and an edgy big city? go to Strathclyde.

is he likely to want to do a 4 year course anyway because of year abroad/year in industry? Go to Strathclyde (I think like Glasgow they don’t charge any fees to English students for 3rd year, whereas UEA will charge £1850 fees for a year abroad am- but double check)

does he want to be in striking distance of friends in other unis? If so, Go to Norwich (I suspect).

lots Of qs to ask re business vs economics too I think. Quite different.

Delphigirl · 19/08/2022 17:06

Alternatively you could phone his 5 closest friends and/or wider family members and ask them where they think he should go and why - see if a well-reasoned consensus emerges.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 17:08

Thanks crazy yes I should have just looked! @ChristopherTracy I notice our upfront payment is twice as much as the one for halls belonging to the university 🤨
What are the chances of seeing any of the damage deposit come the end of the year..

Phew!
Been AWOL all afternoon, trying to deal with the Brum accommodation fun…not helped by the system having issues and DD’s DSA recommendations (en suite) not reaching student services.
After a couple of long holds waiting to talk to someone, and a not-very-helpful conversation with someone in disability support, DD has been allocated a room in the Vale, but we won’t know where until she gets an email over the weekend.

Thanks again for everyone’s words of wisdom about other people’s opinions about education/parenting choices, and especially for sharing your stories, Fruity and Crazy.
My twin and I did the entrance exams and audition for SWP. I was given a scholarship but my sister wasn’t, so my parents decided not to send either of us, feeling that they needed to treat both of us the same; the result was that my sister, who was much more sassy than me and much less academically motivated than me, loved our local comp, whereas I was bullied for being a music geek.
It made me resolve to send our DCs to the schools that best met their needs, whether that was state or private.

cinnamon, Monkey is spot on - WNO do a lot of excellent youth and community projects. They offer free tickets for dress rehearsals and cheap student tickets for students, as does BBC NOW.
I think I said it when your DD was first trying to decide between Southampton and Cardiff, but Cardiff has so much music going on, I’m sure she’ll find lots to get involved with as well as lots of concerts and gigs to go to.
The boy in DD’s year, who had places at the London conservatoires for singing but turned them down because his (recent) GF is at Cardiff Uni, is now going to Cardiff for music - he’s lovely and extremely talented. 😀

Tomnooktoldmeto · 19/08/2022 17:09

@Benjispruce4 both of ours are headed to NTU, we were on City campus last week seeing student support services but both will study at Clifton

Its a great city for students and the city campus is fantastic for student life

We’ve had quite a lot of contact over the last year with them as DD is quite an unusual case. They’ve been so supportive and willing to go the extra mile for her so I can see why they’ve got such high student satisfaction

Hopefully once your DD is there things will settle with travelling to York

GoldenRuby · 19/08/2022 17:14

DS has just graduated from UEA too, so I may also be able to offer advice. The LCR (on campus nightclub) operates on Saturdays and Tuesdays and is very popular, as is Loft, in town, on Thursday nights (at least it was with the hockey crowd).

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 17:28

Blimey. What a week eh! Phew. Is it gin o'clock yet? It's almost the weekend. Will negotiations continue tomorrow or does it stop now till Monday?
Peace to you all. Hope those that still need finalities get resolution.

Fonty · 19/08/2022 17:30

Good news orange. Glad you’re sorted.

Sorry you didn’t get the Newcastle offer @Monkey2001 but sounds like you have a great plan for next year.

Have a couple of friends DC at Leicester @Fiddlersgreen . Not doing journalism but v happy there.

Thank you @alsoplayspiccolo @Monkey2001 @singingstones I know it is great, she does too, deep down. She is a determined thing, and will get over it, just finished a little course on vocal health - one of the vocal tutors is really into that too. The tutors are amazing ...from RWCMD, WNO, Guildhall etc.

Her last day at work and celebrating with MIL having a nice Italian meal. MIL will do the trick in cheering her on , they're besties.

We have done something similar and Strath wins by some margin.

He likes sunshine, nightclubs, edgy, city, 4 year degree for the price of 3, wants to be able to get to girlfriend and friends all in English unis. The Strath degree is better I think, he’s equally happy with content of both, even though they are quite different.

Feel like I’m living in an endless Norwich Glasgow loop which is very odd 😂

Delphigirl · 19/08/2022 17:55

i think if he wants nightclubs edgy city he really can’t go to UEA. For sunshine he will have to get a cheap flight from Glasgow and find it elsewhere! Strathclyde it is! I think Glasgow is a FANTASTIC city to be a student, and Strath is an excellent uni. Whoo hoo!

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 17:57

Just as a heads up DS has just bought a young person's railcard from the Trainline with 1/3 off. It cost him £47 for 3 years! Bargain.

totally worth it - alternatively if you have Tesco points it only costs £10 in vouchers to buy the one year railcard which I've done for both my sons

(lurking cheering you all on, my youngest son has just finished year 1 at Birmingham and middle son just graduated from UEA)

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 18:22

@ChristopherTracy thanks for this - loved time living in Nottingham
