Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@horrificbiology I’m not sure - perhaps Edexcel. I know it’s not AQA as they are the ones with the GCSE marking problem.

Working at a school, it’s easy to forget the whole process is a mystery to some. A parent has asked on that FB site if schools now the grades before the student opens their envelope. I guess they have never thought about who stuffs the envelopes!!

Bristol have emailed dd but stated that they don't do clearing!

In 12 hours we should know

Chewbecca · 17/08/2022 20:43

12hrs!!!!!!!!!

Heifer · 17/08/2022 20:44

@Piggywaspushed so was DDs course when I looked earlier but it then went offline until
and once updated said no vacancies for any uk students

Vacancies for international students only
York is an increasingly popular choice, and following an exceptionally competitive year, we have no vacancies available for UK (Home) students.

Longest 12 hrs of my life @singingstones :-)

singingstones · 17/08/2022 20:59

Fyi Leicester clearing places are on their website with updated grade requirements

Reading also have them available if you register your interest (not publishing them officially until tomorrow)

Lancaster, Surrey and Sussex on their websites

Right you lot. We have two new threads for you to avail yourselves of tonight;

A Distraction Thread We Won't Discuss Result Anxieties Here

The Thread for Results and Results Discussion

Just thought it might be nice to have the lighthearted Distraction Thread so we can all guess Delphi's mystery celeb

Just reposting the links to the new threads so easier to find. Will do on next page too.

Dd had an email from Leicester - lots of courses in clearing at quite low grades. CCC for History (which is what I studied at Leicester!).

I’ve been distracted by Segway this afternoon- I only fell off once but it was quite painful! Dd is just back from a couple of days away, and has been roped into walking to the supermarket with ds to buy him some birthday Bailey’s 😬 I’m waiting for the takeaway to arrive!

That’s a bit unfair for some to get an inkling in advance @Monkey2001 by being asked to come in early. Your poor ds!

Dd has now agreed to leave at 8 tomorrow. This will mean we leave no earlier than 8.30! Hopefully she’ll have had the UCAS update by then.

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 21:17

Went out for a couple of drinks. DS chilled: what will be will be.! Will pick up on other threads but thinking of you all x

KingscoteStaff · 17/08/2022 21:40

Just finished massive drive up + down to Durham to help DS move into his third year house! That beautiful city looking stunning in the sun.

DS (loyal brother) spent both journeys answering ‘Mum, stop! She will be FINE!’ to every new thing I found to worry about.

Back home to find DH and DD calmly eating takeaway curry on the sofa.

11 hours now.

Fruitygal · 17/08/2022 21:45

@Heifer Think York are fudging - they did have more deferrals than most last year so initially I thought it might be true but other unis lecturers think they may have offered lower grades to offer holders who missed out to avoid clearing to look more in demand …. Let’s hope everyone has they’d places there

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 21:46

Ah @KingscoteStaff it really is a beauty city. DD1 was sad to leave her 3rd year house. Hope your son enjoy his last year.
Good luck everyone for tomorrow. DD and I having a little drink and a chat. All good. Watched the parents of that poor lad who died in that helicopter accident talking earlier on the news and just felt a sudden perspective. This really isn’t the be all and end all. What will be , will be.

Anon778833 · 17/08/2022 21:49

My dd was predicted really good results but we got an email from her school today to say that examiners had been asked not to award as many As as previous years. How is it fair that they keep changing the grade boundaries?

Anyway, I wish I’d found this thread before. She had an unconditional offer at one uni but has chosen a uni which gave a conditional offer. Her predicted grades are above the offer but it’s nerve wracking isn’t it?

EwwSprouts · 17/08/2022 21:55

Hi @MondaysChild7 Join us on the thread for results which is linked about four posts up.

Fruitygal · 17/08/2022 21:56

@Monkey2001 DDs school don’t let journos or tv near the kids - they do well at gcse in the top 10’ for state but head only allows one pic from local paper later than results pick up and no interviews. DSs sixth form a free for all with BBC news everywhere 😂🤣😂

Never forget the time BBC breakfast had three kids getting grades on camera in a fabulously outstanding northern comp. Two kids very modest but the other a bit over confident verging on arrogant prior to opening - his grades were a disaster for him - think the teachers did it deliberately it was cringy. Think your DS will be fine @Monkey2001 probably better not to have that spotlight xx
