Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@HarrietDVane thank you!

I have been lurking, thank you for the welcome and best of luck to everyone.

I don't know whether I'm feeling so nervous, or ill, or if peri menopause is having an effect. I genuinely have a churning stomach and my heart keeps racing. Daren't tell dd!
Is this just me? I really didn't expect to feel so worried.

I feel the same. She is my eldest so it is all an u known for me. I never went to uni so can't even imagine what it is like.

Thanks for all the good wishes!

@Heifer A level Biology is particularly difficult for dyslexic kids - it does not test your knowledge as much as it tests your ability to give them the answer they want. We have 2 dyslexic friends who underperformed in Biology, but could tell you everything on the syllabus. University exams are different, they are testing knowledge and correct science gets credit, they don't have narrow mark schemes. She really should see her result, whatever it is, in this context.

This is exactly right. If I had understood the madness of the biology mark scheme and the fact it is a memory test, I would never have let DS do it. He understands all the science but can’t “perform” as required

Delphigirl · 17/08/2022 14:35

As a bit of light relief though, DS has found out who his three ”suite mates” are for his year abroad in the US (sharing 2beds, 2bath, living, kitchen) and one is the child of an international music megastar. I wish I could tell you who, you would all laugh as much as I have. But alas I must be discreet! Only in LA!

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 14:37

@Delphigirl That is brilliant! Tee hee.

ealingwestmum · 17/08/2022 14:39

That’s just brilliant Delphigirl. Just think of all the insider celeb gossip you are going to get as a bonus for a year!

NCTDN · 17/08/2022 14:40

Oh Delphi we need to know!!

NCTDN · 17/08/2022 14:40

@horrificbiology i do sort of feel relieved that it's not just me.

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 14:43

We are distracting ourselves by watching Married at First Sight Australia together. We got hooked on lockdown and thought this might be the moment to watch another series now that the weather has turned. DD has no appetite which I’m taking to be anxiety.

Delphigirl · 17/08/2022 14:46

I do really want to tell you one day but I can’t now. It will be worth the wait, I promise!!! Omg

Tantalising! Hope that does not mean a druggy lifestyle.

DS1 had a marquis in his corridor and when you fill in forms to register there are a lot of options for "title" at St Andrews. Hugh Grant has been banned from student properties for inappropriate behaviour, Bill Murray was at his DC's party doing the washing up!

It is a great opportunity to mix with all sorts of people and maybe tarnish some glitter!

Delphigirl · 17/08/2022 15:01

Love the idea of bill Murray in the sink 🤣🤣

who knows about drugs - there seem to be a lot everywhere - just have to trust him. But the parent is not wild and out of control by any means - rather quirky and admirable and a proper artist

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2022 15:03

I am so common, I read that as marquee...

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/08/2022 15:03

DS loves Keele and even though predicted higher grades he put it as his first choice. Much preferred to Lancaster

horrificbiology · 17/08/2022 15:24

My DD has her heart set on Lancaster, I haven't been but she loved it. I walked around a few more local ones with my son who is ASD and in the same cohort. He sadly had a mental breakdown during his A Levels so we are now re looking at education options like BTechs. Otherwise I would have been waiting on double results so double the stress.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 17/08/2022 15:29

I just want it over now, DS is wanting hugs and reassurance DD is fairly nonchalant with 2 already in the bag but strangely worried about DS for once which is usually a sign that she needs reassurance too

I’m honoured at your choice of thread title, as you can imagine with 2 bright but highly SEN DC I have to do a lot of positive modelling, but I truly believe this group will do well having navigated the assault course of the last 3 years

Good luck to everyone, hugs , tissues and alcohol. we have survived, now it’s time to thrive

Seeline · 17/08/2022 15:29

Thanks for views on Keele - seems a bit split! DD favours campus unis, so a plus point, but worried it might be a bit quiet (lack of shopping could be an issue!). Accommodation looks varied - some says 14ish sharing a bathroom! Can't find details on that.

Are you watching the latest ? Just don't google anything because you are in for some serious drama.Smile I only started watching last year too, feel terribly late to the party. It really is good distraction therapy.

Been lurking here for ages, can’t believe it’s almost here! Second time around for us, DC1 was in 2020 and I thought I’d be more relaxed this time round but I’m not!
hope everyone gets the results they deserve tomorrow, looking forward to reading updates 😊

mummyinbeds · 17/08/2022 15:59

@Seeline online shopping 😁

I lived in Horwood for my three years at Keele, often said to be the worst on campus but I loved it. I shared a bathroom and kitchen with 11 others. The bathroom had two baths which nobody ever used plus one shower (with only a curtain 😱) The kitchen had one under counter fridge. I believe things have been updated since the 90's. DH shared with 7 others for his first year and 20+ after that. I don't remember ever having to wait for the shower but the fridge was an issue.

The Oaks and Holly Cross opened whilst I was there. They felt a bit like a hotel and were too expensive for me at £36 a week 😂

Barnes flats were probably the most social - at the time they were all second and third years so we'll established groups of friends. The new Barnes accommodation looks lovely but so expensive.

Ps- I've been doing my research as it's on DD's shortlist 😁

Seeline · 17/08/2022 16:03

I don't think DD could cope with sharing a bathroom with 11 others!! One between 2 possibly.

Inamuddle36 · 17/08/2022 16:08

Hi, everyone. I am new here. Was searching for some sort of chat/virtual group hug for comfort on what feels like a l-o-n-g day. Our DS is away so we won’t be with him when he receives his results. Not sure what to do. We could go online ourselves (school portal) to check results (my husband’s preference) but I think we should wait for him to check and share the news with us. But…. If the news is disappointing he might not share right away and might seek comfort/advice from the friends he is with rather than from us and, while it is a good group of friends, I think we could guide him better than his peers.
mis anyone else in a similar situation (or geographically distant from a D.C. who will receive results tomorrow?
Feeling very, very nervous!

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 16:30

Yes @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee series 9. Already overly invested! I never search for spoilers.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2022 16:35

DS planning to go to school at.30 tomorrow. Will he definitely know via UCAS before then whether he has his place or not? DH suddenly showing an interest...an not impressed by my vague response, it seems...
