Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

DD has updated the schedule ! She wants to get to school early so I can log on in the car park for ucas - she’s still saying she’s not looking I have to do it?!?!?

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 17/08/2022 13:01

She'll probably change her mind @Fruitygal perhaps suggest do it together ?

Dd got called a CU Next Tuesday last night at her job (ran out of Budweiser) lovely! She seems to have built a bit of resilience since working in the local shop that regularly gets mouthy customers and vandalism from bored teens.

School release results through Portal at 8am but she wants to check UCAS first. I would be inclined to do other way round!

Might watch a couple of films to distract myself tonight, at least it will ensure I will get some sleep, I always seem to have a snooze at the critical parts of the plot.

horrificbiology · 17/08/2022 13:13

Not sure I will be sleeping much tonight. Worrying about what to do if she doesn't get a place then at the same time worrying about her getting a place and getting everything ready she needs.

What do they need to take to Uni?

Comefromaway · 17/08/2022 13:14

I live near to Keele. It is a beautful campus and it does seem isolated but there are very frequent buses to Newcastle-under-Lyme. N-u-L is a quiet town with not much happening (though they have a great band music scene and a great theatre but you then also have nearby Stoke-on-Trent.

The big thing we lack is shopping.

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 13:16

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee
I knew you would be! I was only teasing. Wink

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 13:23

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee thats horrible for your DD. Mine works in two bars and finds male ‘banter’ problematic and creepy. They had to bat a guy who was taking photos of the girls at work!!!

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 13:24

Bar not bat but maybe that would have solved the problem!

icanbewhatiwant · 17/08/2022 13:26

Ds has actually messaged to say he's going to pick up results 9am. He said he will text. I'm not worried though. What will be will be. I'll just wait until he texts me.

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 13:32

Just our projected enrolment figures sent to me. History and English down again - offer will be dropped come tomorrow.

Are you in admissions at a university?

Heifer · 17/08/2022 13:37

@Seeline eline - there was something decent in clearing for DD at Keele but she informed me yesterday that it's got a reputation for being boring but would be great if she was married with 2 children and wanted to do a Masters or PHD... I just asked her to repeat what she said as I couldn't remember and she said no you can't say that it wasn't an informed opinion ;-) I remember looking at it ages ago and looked like a decent uni, good in the league table etc,. I just don't know anyone who has gone there.

@Benjispruce4 uce4 that's useful to know, I ididn't think Durham took C for anything let alone CS.

@Wheresthebeach resthebeach yes they do have to work hard. I will be interested to see how much easier DD finds it at uni with all the software and help with 121 help she will get. Such a shame that it was diagnosed so late in the day at school (April 2022) I still wonder what if any support she would have gotten there if earlier.

@Delphigirl igirl You're right, hopefully DD will feel the same should it come to that.
Funny thing is that she wouldn't think a C was bad if it was someone else, friend etc she would be telling them exactly what youv'e said but she can't see it for herself.

@Monkey2001 nkey2001 hope you feel better soon - plently of lemon and honey (how I hate both), Beechams All in One, Cold & Flu remedy has been helping DD who came back from Boardmasters with a sore throat and cold. throat now ok, just runny nose and generally shattered feeling..

Welcome to the newbies & lurkers :-)

To distract myself this afternoon I shall be on the phone to Sky cancelling Sky Sports, BT Sport and Sky Cinema, saving us £70pm...

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 13:38

@Appuskidu am an English Academic in a senior role in my Dept. My subject is stuffed, generally. It also means we are not expecting some insurances (grand for those awaiting results).

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 13:43

Oh no just seen @Monkey2001 that your are ill. Hope you feel better soon

Sorry, I’m probably being slow-what do you mean when you say you aren’t expecting some insurances?

theresaratinthekitchen · 17/08/2022 13:51

I'm hoping it means that lots of students met their predicted results so those who would usually come through off their insurance offer will presumably take up their first choice instead.

Well I hope it's what it means 🤞🏼

HarrietDVane · 17/08/2022 13:54

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2022 10:57

I feel ill, sore throat, cough, couldn't sleep. Covid test negative, so may be stress! Nearly there!

Hope you feel better soon Monkey! I feel very similar and I think it's lack of sleep combined with anxiety. I'm suppressing my own worry to help DD manage her anxieties (as I think we all are!) and I think it's coming out in other ways. A walk in the fresh air helped!

Wheresthebeach · 17/08/2022 13:54

Sorry you're ill @Monkey2001

@Heifer I think in secondary they don't get anything like the help they need. Seems to really improve once they are in Uni. During the Southampton parents talk they said that dyslexic kids really need the help at secondary that they get at Uni. It would only have been extra time in school exams, and the use of a laptop. Once at Uni they actually get extra tuition, help with finances, software etc so don't beat yourself up about the late diagnosis.

Yeah...I need to look at our subscriptions too....

singingstones · 17/08/2022 13:58

@Seeline
Keele have some really interesting looking courses at reasonably manageable grades and seems to be very popular with people who have studied there. Sadly DS took one look at the campus and said no. I don't know why exactly as DH took him, it's a real shame though.

He can collect results at 0915 and says he will check UCAS just before he goes. He says I can look once he's left, so that will be at about 9. But I think I might check in secret before that so I am prepared for however he is going to be feeling, it will be better for both of us. Unless he thinks to change his password of course. He has been to the gym this morning and is now flopping about and sighing sadly. I am about to paint my study.

Volterra · 17/08/2022 14:01

We’ll need a new thread before tomorrow at this rate!! Really sorry you are unwell @Monkey2001 . Stress and lack of sleep is horrible.

Very much going for distraction here. Guy been to sort blocked drains and I’ve bought a dresser off Marketplace that is being delivered Friday. Person selling it said her Grandson is waiting for his results and commented on what a rough year it for them this time around.

singingstones · 17/08/2022 14:02

Also get well soon Monkey, hope it's 'just' a temporary reaction to stress

tryingmybest13 · 17/08/2022 14:04

@Appuskidu Yep - offers and target enrolments are modelled on past patterns and updated all of the time. Once results are in the projection gets readjusted with the number of insurance offers who won't come, then add in possible Clearing numbers.

Fruitygal · 17/08/2022 14:15

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee i agree she will definitely change her mind at Least twice more. 😂 after doing this twice before with the DSs it doesn’t get easier from a stress perspective but at least you understand the process better!

thamks for all you do on this thread/ group it has been amazing - the original founders if the group should get a MN award for the most friendly place.

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2022 14:19

Thanks for all the good wishes!

@Heifer A level Biology is particularly difficult for dyslexic kids - it does not test your knowledge as much as it tests your ability to give them the answer they want. We have 2 dyslexic friends who underperformed in Biology, but could tell you everything on the syllabus. University exams are different, they are testing knowledge and correct science gets credit, they don't have narrow mark schemes. She really should see her result, whatever it is, in this context.

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 14:23

@Heifer her friend thinks it’s because she was a female applying for a male dominated course.
