Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@Benjispruce4 my niece got into York through Clearing for Psychology with A*AB, standard offer was AAA. It is absolutely possible that they will accept 1 slipped grade

NCTDN · 10/08/2022 08:34

I think I'm more nervous that DD!

MirandaWest · 10/08/2022 08:40

I think DS will get more nervous as we get nearer. I did ask him if he’ll be up for 8am (they can get them from school from then) and he said of course he would be as everyone else will be there and it will be a bit of a social event 😃

I think maths will be his problem. His offer is AAB for Newcastle and ABB for Liverpool. Feel like he’ll be OK for RE and Geography (might even get an A * in one of them) but Maths may be a C…)

Volterra · 10/08/2022 08:41

@Benjispruce4 , friend’s DD got a C in biology when needed a B and insurance took her. Started a Ph.D last September after getting a 1st from Kent in Biomedical science.

There is usually some slack and traditionally a fair few people have got into places not having met offer exactly. Some places won’t and it is course dependent but a dropped grade is not necessarily game over. Also there has been a general hiking of grades this year as Universities have tried to protect themselves after the TAGs and being oversubscribed and also not knowing exactly what would happen this year and I think there is an element of wanting to look competitive as well.

There is young lad in the cupboard under the stairs who has been polite about the amount of crap we have !

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 08:50

Those are possible anecdotal stories, thanks.
She doesn’t want her insurance though as we haven’t even looked at Chester and know nothing about accommodation there. Unlike DD1 who was thorough in her choices( found a folder in the loft that she had compiled with brochure from each uni ranked in order) DD2 just picked somewhere with lower grades without discussing it with us. By the time we found out , it was too late. I think I’ve mentioned before, she had a horrible time last year due to some bullying and very nearly didn’t go back to second year of 6th form so it wasn’t a priority at the time.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 08:50

Positive not possible

NCTDN · 10/08/2022 09:01

Dds insurance is the complete opposite of her firm choice, so not sure what will happen if that's where she gets.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 09:06

DH can’t take day off on 18th so it’s just me as I’m off anyway (term time) and I so hope she is happy! I’m hopeful she gets an email from her firm, first thing to say she’s in them she can check results online without any worries and go in to school if she wants. I think her yearbook that we ordered has to be collected anyway.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 09:06

*to say she’s in, then ….🙄

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2022 09:18

On holiday but briefly checking in to placemark!

EquallyDivided · 10/08/2022 09:19

@icanbewhatiwant my DH doesn't like pasta either 🙄

@Heifer glad you enjoyed the Commonwealth Games. We never got round to getting any tickets but were offered some at the last minute by a friend who couldn't go so we were at the athletics on Saturday morning, it was excellent, we all really enjoyed it.

Monkey2001 · 10/08/2022 09:44

@Benjispruce4 if you read the results day guide I linked earlier, universities aren't allowed to send emails out before 8am this year, so won't be as "first thing" as it might have been in previous years.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 09:44

I tried to get tickets but found the website hard work and gave up. I’m ashamed to say I didn’t even know the games were happening until the week before!

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 09:44

Thanks @Monkey2001 . 8am is first thing to me! 😀

mango0 · 10/08/2022 09:47

I noticed that @Monkey2001. Dd is going into school for 8.15 on results day, it seems like those going in first thing mightn't have any clues on what to expect beforehand.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 09:59

Just read the guide. Thanks for posting that @Monkey2001. DD1 was accepted by Durham before going to get results ( 2019 so had to go in pre Covid) but came out crying. I was so confused. She needed AAB and that’s what she got but she’d never got a B in her life I wasn’t prepared for that scenario. Turns out the school agreed and got a remark in two subjects and her final result was A*AA. It was very important to her and I hadn’t experienced that reaction.

crazycrofter · 10/08/2022 10:14

@heifer I feel like if our girls meet at Nottingham they ought to get on as they're so similar!

Dd is being quite balanced and mature about the results actually; she feels that she didn't revise anywhere near as much as she'd thought she would and she wasn't as well prepared as she should have been, so if she gets lower grades than predicted it will be her fault and she'll accept it. I think as long as she gets in to Nottingham she won't be too upset, maybe just a bit disappointed in herself. If she doesn't get in she has no plan B as insurance is asking for the same grades...

She's only going in to school if her friends are. Otherwise it will be waiting for an email at 10am..

EquallyDivided · 10/08/2022 11:06

We had the opposite problem, I was alerted to the Games by Swim England last year as DD and I are members there was a priority booking thing, which I did register for. But it seemed so far away and so many options that I didn't want to commit before booking holidays etc and didn't bother then by the time I looked again a few weeks ago it was down to just the cheapest and most expensive seats and all single seats.

Oblomov22 · 10/08/2022 11:54

Can't believe my salad cream on a fish finger sandwich caused such uproar. Won't mention it again, promise. 🍟

Oblomov22 · 10/08/2022 11:55

Where's singing? We need a list.
Do you think this thread will last us through clearing?

@oblomov . We always think the thread will stretch and it never does.
I am honestly so anxious that even the words s c are enough to tip me over into nausea!
These poor young people. Education seems so pressured these days. It not at all straightforward even to consider retakes. I’m sure there used to be more flexibility. Mine is away this week so I’m hoping I can get my nerves done in her absence, and then be all calm and comforting come the 18th. Fish finger sandwiches all round.

ealingwestmum · 10/08/2022 12:12

Nice one Oblomov

As much as we don’t want to think about next week in our household, DD is raising certain what if questions.

Even if she nails her results, we still have a further 3 weeks to wait for TCD to offer, or not. The problem is, this is her first choice, but I have to pay Durham’s accom deposit by 25 Aug. She’s already secured accom in Dublin as it’s even more scarce than here. But I’m so tired of wasting money right now.

I’ve never done this before, nor gone to uni myself, so my question to anyone that may know, is that if she accepts her Durham offer (subject to grades) and secures the accom/college via payment, is this non refundable for students who then change their mind and withdraw ahead of matriculation?

Thank you thank you for anyone that knows the process, though I’m preparing myself for it to be non refundable.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 10/08/2022 12:42

Thanks @Oblomov22 I'm sure Singing said she was on hols. But stuff can't have changed much...I have sparkly new name !

Was it you @ealingwestmum who said DH was 'Captain Hindsight'?

I'm quite ticked off with mine at the moment...I said on the last thread that he was worried about her performance in exams/motivations etc. I'd like him to be a bit more positive and have a little faith. Everytime I mention something surrounding results it just seems like he wants to put a downer on it. Not around Dd obviously. He just harrumphed when I talked about a possible celebratory meal on Fri.

The thing is,if he was that worried, a bit more support for her during the bloody revision period or a quiet word about balancing work and social would have been nice. But no just leave all that stuff to me. I become a nag about revision etc then and he stays in the 'good books' 👍

Sorry all Rant Over!

Hi @Oblomov22 Thanks for the tag. To update, dd received offers from all the unis she applied to and went with Firm Warwick ABB Biology and Insurance Surrey BBC Biology. She's applied for accom at Warwick but can't at surrey until results day. Fingers crossed for next week. I'll look up the results day link mentioned. She did well enough in mocks to get into Warwick but I'm a bit nervous. She had one French teacher on long term sick in Year 12 and they couldn't afford to replace her, so only had 50% lockdown and classroom teaching most of that year. I got A in my French mock and C in the real thing so that's making me nervous as I know Warwick is what she is really enthusiastic about
