I call it one thing DH (who was brought up 400miles away) calls it another and DD19 calls it something totally different(wrong!).
Please help me prove noone else calls it what she does!

As an aside, did anyone else’s dinner ladies at school tell them to make sure they ate their crusts because it would make their hair curly? 48 years of eating my crusts and it still hasn’t worked…

pinkponie · 25/02/2026 10:27

The heel.

BellaBlister · 25/02/2026 10:37

The crust now, but when I was growing up we called it the curly because my parents said it gave you curly hair!

ginasevern · 25/02/2026 11:21

The crusts. When I was a child, and we had fresh bread from the bakers, everyone always wanted the crusts (the end bits). But I still call them crusts even for supermarket sliced loaves. I have heard them called toppers too. I'm in the South West.

Haveyouhadamanlook · 25/02/2026 11:28

Heel for an ordinary loaf.

Knob end for a baguette. Obviously.

RaraRachael · 25/02/2026 11:35

I call it the doup. Where I live doup means bum so I guess it's the bottom slice if that makes sense

Oh that made me laugh. Not heard that word in a while. My grandma was always threatening to ‘smack my doupie’ 😂, or complaining ‘that skirt doesn’t cover your doup’

Not applied it to bread - it’s always heel or heelie in my family .

RaraRachael · 25/02/2026 12:23

@Dearg some other great "oup" words - coup, houp, loup, roup.
I should have used these when I was teaching phonics 😅

MotherOfSixCats · 25/02/2026 14:22

For a sliced sandwich style loaf its the crusts, for a smaller style crunchy bread its the nobby end

BambinaCucina · 25/02/2026 16:07

We call it the ender, but pronounce it "en'er"

midlifeattheoasis · 25/02/2026 16:59

I've never heard it called anything else!

LittleGreenDuck · 26/02/2026 12:10

The crust. The end of a baguette is the knobbler.

onelumporthree · 26/02/2026 12:28

The two end bits of a loaf are the crusts.

Unless it is a baguette in which case we call them the knobbly end bits.
