I call it one thing DH (who was brought up 400miles away) calls it another and DD19 calls it something totally different(wrong!).
Please help me prove noone else calls it what she does!

Ender or outsider - Glasgow

FourForksSake · 24/02/2026 22:04

Crust on a sandwich loaf, nob on a baguette.
DH calls it a heel.

anonymeese · 24/02/2026 22:05

the front end is called the ‘the dick’ (when you open the loaf) and the back end is called the ‘bum’ (i’m scottish).

menopausalmare · 24/02/2026 22:09

Crust.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/02/2026 22:10

I always thought it was called the heel because the heel on your feet is tougher/thicker skin than anywhere else on you.

Heel

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 24/02/2026 22:38

The outsider for a plain or pan loaf. A paricularly thick one on a plain loaf is a doorstop.

Typo... too late to edit. Missed the t in particularly.

FredbassetOT · 24/02/2026 22:49

DH is knob or crust. Id say heel if it's a lumpy bit left over like the end of a baguette or tiger loaf.
If I'm cutting off the end of a tin loaded and spreading butter on it to eat, it's the crust.
I'm not saying it's at all rational or consistent...

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 24/02/2026 22:56

I say crust but DH calls it the bum. I thought he/his family made it up but it sounds like there may be others out there! My kids are primary age so you can guess which parent they copy for this word…

Topper! Thank you! Family from Bristol

Florence4170 · 24/02/2026 23:21

Husband calls it the ender.

I’m with your husband!

So sample population of 60 and noone is calling it the bum, I knew she was wrong!

I thought I was going to be the first to call it the bum! It’s the bum or cover for me, crust for other normal people..

NoisyMonster678 · 25/02/2026 00:00

Crust

Disturbia81 · 25/02/2026 08:47

RipplePlease · 25/02/2026 08:47

Topper.
Never to be eaten, but placed over the next slice to keep it fresh.
London.

Halsall · 25/02/2026 09:53

The crust.

Brought up in the NW, never heard it called anything else (though I've since learned that some people call it the 'heel')

And for us, then placed at the bottom of the food waste caddy to stop the bag base getting all soggy and provide some structure.
Either that or toasted if we’ve run out of middle. I don’t mind it toasted, it’s quite nice.
