I call it one thing DH (who was brought up 400miles away) calls it another and DD19 calls it something totally different(wrong!).
Please help me prove noone else calls it what she does!

Clicked on this thread and just assumed everyone would be saying…
the topper!
But seems I’m the first. Hadn’t twigged but must be “the topper the loaf”. Parents from Bethnal Green and Hoxton.

My Scottish family call it the heels. I call it the crust. Or nobby end 🤣🤣 especially with crusty bread 😋😋

Closetangel · 24/02/2026 20:27

I'm Caribbean and we call it " bread back"

Zov · 24/02/2026 20:27

Crust on normal bread. Knob end on a baguette or other fancy crusty loaf.

Coggy boat

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/02/2026 20:32

Heel.

TragicMuse · 24/02/2026 20:32

Depends.

If it’s from a sliced loaf or a sandwich kind of long rectangular loaf, or is a definable ‘slice’ shape then I’d probably just call it the crust.

But if it’s a loaf that’s a bit more pointy at the end then it’s the heel.

So sample population of 60 and noone is calling it the bum, I knew she was wrong!

Ive heard it described as the slag..everybody’s touched it nobody wants it 😬

lizziebuck · 24/02/2026 20:33

Years ago I worked in a staff canteen and we sold toast. Bog standard sliced white loaf. A slice of toast was 10p (it was a long time ago) but if they wanted the ends of the loaves it was 15p! We used to sell them all and people got well miffed if they got in too late and they’d all gone.
