Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

Veal is a newborn calf forcibly and permanently removed from its mother at 24-72 hours old then usually isolated in an indoor pen (to keep its flesh white)

and killed at 4-6 months old. If you saw what went on, I wonder whether you'd still buy it.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 19:44

♥️

I don't wash meat, but you can safely by putting it in a bowl of water with some vinegar/lemon for a few minutes.

You always get one!!!

I love rose veal as it is not done by removing the calf from its mother when it’s very young.

I'm interested in what you eat OP if both you and your partner "aren't into cooking" ?

And what on earth prompted you to cook veal (hard to get hold of, not many recipes) rather than something extremely simple like a roast chicken?

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/10/2024 20:00

Rose veal is male calves from the dairy industry who get to live a life about the same length as a lamb, if not a little longer. They are not kept in cages. Don't buy white veal.

You can't have milk without male calves.

Usually just simple salads, pasta, occasional ready meal. Not really into meat.

It's a very extreme choice for people who aren't into meat.

Almost unbelievably so.

It was the butchers recommendation, they had some on offer.

Yes, very odd. Didn't you consider spaghetti bolognese or sausage and mash? Veal in the slow cooker! Where did you find a recipe?

spottedinthewilds · 05/10/2024 20:06

I'm a meat eater and I wouldn't eat veal.

Mum2jenny · 05/10/2024 20:10

Rose veal is very tasty though. If no one ate it, the male calves would be killed at birth.

I hope, at the very least, you are a vegetarian.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 20:40

@Grrrrr121 Yes, of course. I'm ten years dairy-free egg-free vegetarian but don't dare use the V word here! 😄

It's one of the absolute best things I've ever done. Much to my surprise! A whole new world of amazing food opened up,
My IBS and lifelong sinusitus completely disappeared and my weight is 10x easier to manage.

I would thoroughly recommend it. 🌱💖

@TheShellBeach
My guess would be the op started the thread to wind up a bunch of people.

Looks like she was successful judging by the amount of shouting frantic replies she's been getting.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 20:44

@Mum2jenny
Yeah, always one speaking up for the vulnerable animals!

'Rose veal' another excellent marketing ploy by the meat industry to disguise something stomach turningly awful into something people will pay them for.

Grim.

Meat is a staple in our diets. Something has to die for it.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy

it doesn’t need to be a staple in our diets though, there are plenty of alternatives

No thanks to the alternatives. I have meat my diet least once or twice a day
