Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

I need to be careful because my IL have autoimmune disorders.

So you need to be even more careful, and not wash the meat.

Do you understand why it's more dangerous to wash meat?

My grandparents always the chicken and they were farmers. I don't trust the supermarkets. Especially the budget ones.

To be fair, their chickens still had feathers and shit attached when your Grandma was getting the Sunday Roast ready, so washing that and the burnt bits from singeing the left over feather threads would have been more appropriate.

But if your chickens/pork/veal/lamb/duck/whatever has come from Tesco's, you don't need to and, more importantly, shouldn't do it.

LemonyCoughSyrup · 05/10/2024 18:12

DO. NOT WASH MEAT FOR IMMUNO COMPROMISES PEOPLE YOU WILL EXPOSE THEM TO MORE BACTERIA.

GOOD GOD

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 18:14

I understand that the spray is bad but I always use hot water and I know supermarket has regulations but I usually shop at local butcher.

You are not listening OP.

Never wash any meat in the UK.

titchy · 05/10/2024 18:16

Anyone else shuddering at the amount of bacteria that is in OP's kitchen because she washes meat? Ugh!

Why did you bother starting this thread?
You're just arguing with everyone who is telling you not to wash meat.

Just do what you want then OP. We're all telling you that you're putting people at additional risk but you don't want to listen. We don't really care what you do, they're your family.

As long as you're using fairy as well you should be good 👍

ginasevern · 05/10/2024 18:17

OP, I suggest you sign up for a food safety and hygiene course. One of the things they will tell you is never to wash meat, especially chicken. Anyway, it's easy enough to google and you will find the same answer as everyone on this thread has given you. Do not wash it!

That’s doesn’t matter! DO NOT WASH YOU ARE PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK

Butcher meat is fine!!! They have regulations too, it might even be better. I worked in a kitchen and we used butchered meat and never washed it.

Hot water makes no difference you will be CONTAMINATING your kitchen and hot water will spray just as bad and isn’t hot enough to kill germs

GrazingLamb · 05/10/2024 18:18

Do you know anything about food safety??
You sound dangerous.

WetBandits · 05/10/2024 18:19

Why did you bother posting if you’re just going to argue with everyone saying you shouldn’t wash meat?

Wash it if you want, I just hope I never eat at your house with all your chickeny water spraying all over the kitchen 🤢

heldinadream · 05/10/2024 18:19

@kimbear87 a woman died of campylobacter BECAUSE she washed the chicken.
Got it?
DON'T WASH THE MEAT IT'S MORE DANGEROUS, YOU CANNOT TRACK AND CLEAN EVERYWHERE IT HAS SPLASHED AND SPRAYED.
Please listen.

Cowboycorgi · 05/10/2024 18:20

@TheShellBeach
My guess would be the op started the thread to wind up a bunch of people.

gamerchick · 05/10/2024 18:20

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 17:57

chicken has really bad bacteria though. I don't want salmonella.

Well you'll get something if you wash chicken in the sink..

No way this is real, seriously dude, sign up for some classes for food stuff

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/10/2024 18:20

Isn’t veal cruel?

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 18:21

I think I understand now. I remember seeing in Gordon Ramsay kitchen show them washing all the meats and so I always have. I was only asking about veal but thank you for informing me that I don't need to wash the others as well. I have never had food poisoning before.

Meat is pretty cruel, fullstop.

Mamabobogo · 05/10/2024 18:22

How can you be so unenlightened with IC in laws?

Ridiculous.

Do what you want, you’ve been told but keep arguing.

So just bloody crack on.

the inheritance will come sooner. 🙄

Redflagsabounded · 05/10/2024 18:22

The thing is, OP, you wouldn't try to wash germs off your hands just with water, would you? You'd use soap as water alone doesn't really kill anything. So unless you want to soap up your meat, it'll still have some bacteria on it, and you'll have rinsed some all over your sink.

Cooking kills bacteria.
