Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

Red meat is classed as a carcinogen though, so not sure eating it that much is a great idea..... vast animal cruelty hideousness aside.

Short answer: yes.

You always get one!!!

I love rose veal as it is not done by removing the calf from its mother when it’s very young.

Don’t be so daft. Children are taught where their food comes from in school.

You have to admit it’s pretty barbaric. Accept it, enjoy your meal, but don’t pretend!

Oh and don’t wash it. 💦 Surprised you trust the supermarkets to pre wash your mince OP. I mean mince is probably the worst stuff you can eat.

@Mum2jenny

Here's a Rose Veal calf...

Cute

Thfrog · 05/10/2024 21:07

Mum2jenny · 05/10/2024 20:10

Rose veal is very tasty though. If no one ate it, the male calves would be killed at birth.

Would some one not eat them then though?

Usually just simple salads, pasta, occasional ready meal. Not really into meat.

This is a bold move of you to cook this for your inlaws. I hope they enjoy it

I don't remember asking about animal rights. I didn't ask about chicken. I'm pretty sure I asked whether veal was supposed to be washed (which as has been discussed is a common misconception).

Yes, looking back on my post it seems stupid. And I admitted that earlier. As a long term member of this site, I understand that any topic will inevitably have some criticism. But a simple question about cooking (which is not one of my many expertises). Does it really merit this much backlash? Hmm

I wash chicken just cause that's what my my parents always did, no other meat though

My parents used to boil vegetables for an hour until they resembled unidentifiable 'mush' and keep all their cash in a box under the bed...

I prefer to be able to tell what veg I'm actually eating and use a bank to keep my money in. 🤷‍♀️

No it doesn't. You've asked how to prepare meat on the food section of mumsnet. I'm not sure what the halal has to do with it but maybe it does I don't know.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/10/2024 21:16

Oh Cheap Veal ? are you sure it’s veal since there’s a shortage. 🤔

WingBingo · 05/10/2024 21:18

Gawd. Not another meat washer

That's BS I eat more chicken and pork. Don't eat redmeat every day. Every few days maybe

teatoast8 · 05/10/2024 21:29

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/10/2024 20:49

@teatoast8

thats an unnecessary amount of meat

Hardly. It's the way I've grown up. My dad's a butcher. My mams healthy homecooked meals were the best. Got well fed

@teatoast8

so do you not care about animal cruelty?

It is what it is. And not all of it is cruel.

Oh well. Like I said I probably eat more chicken. Either way I don't care. Will eat what I want. I eat plenty veg and salad/fruit in between

I wasn't getting at you. Meat consumption is a personal thing. Just pointing out in case you thought it was white meat.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 22:01

@teatoast8
Maybe get on to Cancer Research and tell them their science backed findings are 'BS' then. 😬😄

And no, all of it is cruel. It's an uncomfortable truth, but all animal products involve cruelty (sometimes tremendous cruelty, eg dairy...) Look into it if you don't believe me. I'm just the messenger.

It's a massive, billion pound industry so they will tell us lots of lovely things and clever phrases to cover all that up of course because they want to MAKE MONEY! 🤩

The hygiene in those places is appalling usually they don't even have gloves

And yet will still be much cleaner than your kitchen.

wearing gloves often has the opposite affect as people don’t change them as often as they wash their hands.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 22:29

I still think if you mustn't wash something in case it spreads bacteria around your home does it sound sensible to eat that even when it's been cooked... 🫤

StSwithinsDay · 05/10/2024 22:51

@Treesnbirds
High temperatures kill pathogens. Washing will not achieve that.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/10/2024 23:08

I don't wash meat but what do you do about plastic food trays? You're supposed to wash them before recycling them.

JSMill · 06/10/2024 00:48

AppleKatie · 05/10/2024 17:59

You know what kills the bacteria on meat OP?

The oven.

stop washing meat it is not recommended

Absolutely this.

@teatoast8

things like veal and fois grois most definitely are cruel. They should be banned. Doesn’t matter how tasty there are to some people.

Mince is the worst thing you can eat? Why?

I love a good bolognaise, pork and beef mince simmered for a few hours. I only buy free range pork though.

Not sure what that poster is on about as seems they have an agenda, but from a food hygiene point of view, mince is quite hazardous when consumed uncooked. You need to make sure it’s cooked all the way through - unlike other beef, you can’t have it rare. The mincing process means that bacteria from the outside of the meat (that would be cooked off in say, a steak) gets all mixed in throughout the mincing process. Whereas only the outside of a steak is open to the elements so the inside of it can be eaten rare. If that makes sense??
