Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

Where on earth did you think you need to wash meat from? Seriously no dont

StSwithinsDay · 05/10/2024 22:51

@Treesnbirds
High temperatures kill pathogens. Washing will not achieve that.

Yeah, I get that, I'm just wondering whether we should be eating food covered with pathogens.... I mean meat is certainly exposed to faeces in the slaughtering/ butchering process.

That's why we eat beans and plants now instead. 💚
(And surprisingly feel so much better for it!)

I don't wash meat but what do you do about plastic food trays? You're supposed to wash them before recycling them.

Yes, that worries me too. I do wash them- but I use the utility room sink rather than kitchen sink as we don’t do any food prep in there (I realise not everyone has a utility room!) I put washing up liquid in the tray and then pour water in it very slowly to minimise splashing. Jiggle it around a bit, pour the water out and then pop it in the recycling. Then spray and wipe round the sink area.

PumpyUmpyUmpkin · 06/10/2024 09:56

I always wash my chicken. I don't spray salmonella everywhere. I wash it gently in the sink and then bleach down immediately after.

It wouldn't exist if we didn't want to eat meat. You'd have 0 cows at all in that case.

Actually British rose veal is a by product of the dairy industry. Without it the male calves would be slaughtered anyway, so raising them humanely for a period and then using them for food is the ethically superior option.

I don't wash or recycle any packaging that's been in contact with meat. It goes straight into the bin. Our non-recycled waste goes to an incinerator that produces energy from waste so I feel that's reasonable.

I like to be careful especially when we have guests. If it's for the dog I don't bother.

What has the dog done to piss you off?

Do not wash meat before cooking. Its dangerous

@teatoast8

things like veal and fois grois most definitely are cruel. They should be banned. Doesn’t matter how tasty there are to some people.

I enjoy veal. Never had fois grois

Well, don't bother. You should not be washing it at all.

For what reason though? Genuinely curious. You’re cooking the bacteria off, so what does washing it do? A more moist result?

Treesnbirds · 06/10/2024 19:42

@PinkTonic

Sadly there's nothing "ethically superior" about "Rose Veal" That's just very clever marketing. ^
^
Sure, they're a by- product of the HORRIFIC dairy industry. Don't support that either! By buying the 'waste by product' of newborn male calves, you are just supporting both hideous industries.

Mistymorin · 06/10/2024 19:43

Never wash meat or chicken but I do squeeze a lemon over and inside the chicken before cooking (something my mother use to do, so I do the same!).

i just think it's not just the salmonella on it, it's been passed from pillar to post, god knows who has touched it and what it's been on. I'd rather know I've cleaned it. I put it in the sink and sprinkle it with salt, leave for a few mins and then give it a clean and wash it off. Always have, my parents do too and in laws 🤷🏻‍♀️ I always bleach the sink and surfaces as soon as I'm done and don't have any cutlery or dishes out drying on the rack, to make sure I don't splash any utensils or anything. I suppose it's difffent though if someone splashes it everywhere and then doesn't effectively clean after, which is possibly why they say it's not safe to clean it.

unless you are bleaching the meat, then salt and washing isn’t going to make a bit of difference!

To salmonella and such no, which I agree with and said. It's just for general grime and germs that it's picked up being in the butchers being touched or sitting in the packet 🤷🏻‍♀️ id rather rinse it off

But washing chicken is the opposite of being careful!
Cooking chicken kills bacteria. Washing simply splashes chickeny water over your sink area….

This.

Absolutely this.

Mmhmmn · 06/10/2024 22:54

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 17:57

chicken has really bad bacteria though. I don't want salmonella.

Any bacteria on meat would usually be killed off by the cooking process although admittedly I don’t know if this applies to slow cooking as it’s a low temp over a long time. Would you sear it for a bit first? . 🤔

spottedinthewilds · 05/10/2024 20:06

I'm a meat eater and I wouldn't eat veal.

Also me.

FinallyHere · 07/10/2024 11:33

I would love to understand what people have against eating veal these days?.

Years ago, 1960's if I remember correctly, veal were fed only on milk and held in crates to stop the m licking anything salty which was believed to ruin the pure white colour of their meat

A really cruel and unusual practice which lots of us boycotted. Pure white coloured veal is no longer available. The veal I see sold nowadays is pink so clearly not from crated baby cows.

Why are people refusing to buy this veal ?

EBearhug · 07/10/2024 11:56

Why are people refusing to buy this veal ?

  • Because they are against all use of animals in agriculture.
  • Because they aren't aware of current welfare requirements for raising calves (in the UK, at least.)
  • Because it's not the cheapest meat.

I don't think veal was ever the most frequently eaten meat.

You ARE splashing though, you just don't see it. You don't need to wash chicken.

KnittedCardi · 07/10/2024 12:15

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 19:38

Veal is a newborn calf forcibly and permanently removed from its mother at 24-72 hours old then usually isolated in an indoor pen (to keep its flesh white)

and killed at 4-6 months old. If you saw what went on, I wonder whether you'd still buy it.

Not in the UK it usn't
