Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

I spray my meat with antibac before cooking.

How lax! You should bleach it!

I don't like the taste.

@kimbear87 if you wash chicken especially all you are doing is spreading any bacteria around the kitchen 🤢🤢

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 05/10/2024 18:30

No, you should not wash meat before cooking it:

Cross-contamination: Washing meat can spread bacteria from the meat to other foods, utensils, and surfaces in your kitchen. This is called cross-contamination and can make you sick.

Cooking kills bacteria: The cooking process kills any bacteria that might be on the meat.

Cleaning surfaces: Scrubbing surfaces with soapy water doesn't necessarily remove pathogens.

I wash chicken just cause that's what my my parents always did, no other meat though

Isn’t veal cruel?

Veal is tasty

GrazingLamb · 05/10/2024 18:32

@kourtberry
You don’t have to do what your parents did. Educate yourself on food safety.

Wolfpa · 05/10/2024 18:33

Doesn’t sound like any meal you will prepare will be worth it. Treat yourself to a takeout instead

Then bloody well stop doing it. As you will see from the multiple responses, it is wrong!

The hygiene in those places is appalling usually they don't even have gloves

That sounds like a euphemism.

That's literally the worst meat for you to wash!

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 18:42

Thank you for all the replies. I read the NHS article and I realised I was wrong. My flatmates in uni always washed their food and that's where I picked up the habit. Sorry for winding some of you up I know I must look quite stupid now

You shouldn't be able to get crated veal any more. If it's British veal, it will almost definitely be rose veal, from calves raised in straw bedded barns.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/10/2024 18:44

HangDai · 05/10/2024 18:27

Halal is cruel.

The vast majority is pre-stunned and in any case, it makes no difference to the animal whether somebody has a prayer playing on the tannoy as they get slaughtered or not. That and, as with Shechita, the entire process is planned and carried out by highly trained people with incredibly sharp tools and is designed to cause absolutely minimal awareness or sense of pain to the animals.

DreamW3aver · 05/10/2024 18:44

Maybe stick to being the one who doesn't usually cook 😁

teatoast8 · 05/10/2024 18:31

so? Doesn’t justify animal cruelty.

I like to be careful especially when we have guests. If it's for the dog I don't bother.

By washing the meat, you’re spreading bacteria (eg, salmonella) around your sink and increasing your risk of food poisoning.

Just plop it into a dish and cook it. Usually no touching even required, and certainly no splashy water, and no transporting around the kitchen.
