Not usually one to cook but the ILs are coming over in a couple days. Bought some veal to put in the slow cooker.
Are you supposed to wash pre cut meat? Or has it been done in the factory? I know you're meant to wash chicken and pork when it's still got the skin on but I'm not sure about veal. DH doesn't know either Confused

On another note. What recipe are you using the veal in OP?

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/10/2024 18:44

@teatoast8

so? Doesn’t justify animal cruelty.

So?

Going to slow cooker instead of using the oven

3 and a half hours in the oven will kill off anything. I’d be worried it’s only got 2 stars !

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/10/2024 18:53

@kimbear87 what country are you in OP?? I am 70 and have not ever washed a piece of meat or chicken in my life!! just stupid doing that! UK does not wash any meat!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/10/2024 18:55

If you look at the packaging on chicken it tells you specifically not to wash it.

It wouldn't exist if we didn't want to eat meat. You'd have 0 cows at all in that case.

Surely you would prefer not to exist if that was going to be your end?

Not really an argument for eating meat really is it

Doublesidedstickytape · 05/10/2024 18:59

Cooking kills bacteria.
Washing meat just splashes micro droplets of bacteria all over your kitchen.

Meat is a staple in our diets. Something has to die for it.

It may be a staple in yours. But I'm here and it isn't in mine!

I have never eaten a single piece of meat in my life so no, it’s not a staple. I don’t have an issue with people who do eat meat, but I do think it’s weird to describe it as a staple (and I’m from a country where being vegetarian is almost unheard of, so even then).

drspouse · 05/10/2024 19:04

The calf also has to exist if you want milk.
I don't eat veal because it's harder to find than other meats, not because I think it's any more cruel than any other meat.

I think I understand now. I remember seeing in Gordon Ramsay kitchen show them washing all the meats and so I always have. I was only asking about veal but thank you for informing me that I don't need to wash the others as well. I have never had food poisoning before.

Gordon Ramsey never washed meat

It's not weird at all to call it staple part of diet

Thfrog · 05/10/2024 19:09

You don't look stupid. Lots of people DO wash meat but it's not very hygienic as you spray the bacteria everywhere no matter how careful you are.

Flopsythebunny · 05/10/2024 19:12

kimbear87 · 05/10/2024 17:57

chicken has really bad bacteria though. I don't want salmonella.

Ffs... You shouldn't wash any meat, especially chicken. Cooking properly will get rid of any bugs

Mum2jenny · 05/10/2024 19:13

Never washed meat in my life. Don’t know anyone who does this. Just why would one do this?

catmothertes1 · 05/10/2024 19:19

I'm trying to get my head round the concept of washing meat!

The hygiene in those places is appalling usually they don't even have gloves

wearing gloves usually means a kitchen has worse hygiene outcomes. If I touch a piece of raw chicken and then pick up a bit of salad wearing the same gloves then the effect is the same as if I had bare hands. evidence has shown that wearing gloves makes food handlers complacent about cross contamination so if you think wearing gloves is some sort of silver dagger against food poisoning you are deluding yourself !

BobbyBiscuits · 05/10/2024 19:35

No need to wash meat, as others say it can spread bacteria across the sink area.
I love veal though. I'm sure it will be lovely.
