Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

This was one of many things utterly lost on me. Kept wondering when the people from the sea were going to turn up.

I lost interest very quickly though, as I mentioned up thread.

What is Epic? Sounds interesting.

they did change it up: lots of the emotional connections Odysseus makes like guilt aren’t really in the original, and he was meant to be clever and cunning. Someone described him as a plot device to visit all the SFX and I thought that was quite a good summing up.

I reading that the People from the sea, were just people driven to raiding after crop failures etc.
So people trying to find food and valuables etc and a new place to live!
Because society broke down as they were lots a small city states.

Epic is a musical version of the Odyssey, I think it began as the author's COVID lockdown project? It's about 11 hours long, but the music is great, it's what sparked DD's interest in the classics.

You're absolutely right, thanks, they did say that, I was thinking in terms of the journey took 20 years rather than they were away from home for 20 years.

I felt like Calypso came across as a therapist, not as someone drugging him to forget. The whole portrayal was really weird.

I saw it last night I surprised myself by enjoying it . I hated how Americanised it was and some of the laughable dialogue . A lot of it was mumbled and I didn't think the acting was all that good really apart from Penelope. Too much violence and not enough subtlety. However I did enjoy it. Must re read the Odyssey.

To be fair 3 hours in original Greek would be a hard sell to the general
public. Once you are not doing that why should Ancient Greeks use English terms rather than US ones?! Have heard that criticism a few times and it makes no sense to me.

The language used was so ridiculous . It was the language of a Disney film at times. The enunciation of the actors was sorely lacking. Mumbled and garbled. They didn't come across as trained actors though many of them are big names. Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway being the exception. It is a classic story set in ancient times but that didn't come across enough for me. It was all too lightweight. I did enjoy it though. I would have liked more subtlety and more cunning and intelligence, less brute force.

Overall I enjoyed it. I found the whole mom/dad annoying but I didn’t have the issues others have commented on re mumbled dialogue and overly loud sound effects. I do think Zendaya was underused and that whilst excellent Robert Pattinson and Samantha Morton are at risk of being typecast as villain/witch.

I loved Samantha Morton in the Serpent Queen and Band of Gold which was many moons ago.

I've loved her since she did Minority Report. She's a fabulous actress with an unusual back story for actresses these days.

I saw it last night - thought it was an excellent take on it. Obviously, it's the 'The Odyssey' I don't think anyone can film that and it used the story judiciously, as in missing out things like the Odysseus' stops between Calypso's island and Ithica (I wouldn't have recalled this but I re-read it recently). But it also added in modern themes like PTSD, civilisational collapse and women's perspective on war in a deft way that fits with the original story. Also liked the way they minimised the gods' visible role in the story so it focused on the human element.

Loved the sequence of them escaping the wooden horse and opening the gates of Troy, really captured the significance of that to the whole mythology.

Saw this last night and thought it was fantastic.
DS2 watched it at an IMAX and I can imagine that would have been incredible with the beach scenes.
I thought all the actors were excellent, even Tom Holland who I’m not usually a fan of.

I watched it on IMAX 70mm yesterday and thought the cinematography in particular was amazing. The vistas and the colours were amazing. The sound design was superb and tbh I didn’t get the mumbling others heard (and I usually complain about that - especially on television where I have to have subtitles on these days). The story isn’t especially true to the original epic but I had steeled myself for that. It’s very much Nolan’s telling of Odysseus’ story rather than a faithful reproduction of the Odyssey. But globally I loved it and feel privileged that my city is the only one in the country where I could see it in that format.
