Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

I was looking forward to it but didn't really enjoy it.

It was too loud making it difficult to hear the dialogue (which could be my age) but considering what a great story it's based on, it was 3 hours where nothing much happens. Lots of time on the battles, retribution, storm at sea scenes and not much character development at all.

@Bosee Don't apologise because of your age. People of whatever age go to the cinema and lots of us have hearing problems, tinnitus etc. The sound design of the film was rubbish IMO - all, IMO, in service of the message being hammered home that this was not just any old film, but an amazing film. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more it annoys me 😁

The dialogue was particularly mumbling at the start. Its a Nokan thing and deeply irritating. I didn't find tge film too loud overall. One time I went to the cinema , I nearly went to ask them to turn the sound up! With this, it'll be the IMAX cameras and sound mixing, like when sound is crap on modern tellys.

Conclave is an example of a film with exceptional sound.

Can't edit now but obviously I meant a Nolan thing! As is men in masks (more mumbling) and women hidden from view/dead/ missing/ behind screens/ partially seen etc , which thoroughly irritates me.

Here are the 'artistic' reasons we are meant to put up with Nolan's mumbling:

Christopher Nolan's notorious mumbling or hard-to-hear dialogue is primarily an intentional artistic choice rather than a technical mistake. He famously refuses to bring actors back for studio re-recording (ADR), preferring the raw, on-set audio to match his booming, immersive scores and the mechanical whir of his favored IMAX cameras.
The infamous muffled dialogue dates all the way back to The Dark Knight Rises (with Bane's mask) and heavily features in films like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. Nolan argues that using dialogue simply as a "sound effect" forces audiences to pay closer visual attention to the actors' emotions and faces rather than treating them like strict exposition machines.

I'm afraid it was spoilt for me by the noise. It wasn't a soundtrack. It reminded me of bloody Dune 😡
I also didn't like the Americanisation of the dialogue "ok" 🙄
I thought the hades/shades scenes were really good.
I also liked how annoyed Penelope was when Telemachus was being a moron 😃
I didn't really get the hype but that's true of every Nolan film I've seen.
Robert Pattinson was very good as a slimy suitor.
I don't get the Tom Holland love tbh. He's fine. Nothing special.

i find all films at the cinema too loud, so I always take my Loop Experiences.

Gawd. What poppycock. You've just reminded me about Dark Knight Rises. Marina Hyde (whose views I generally respect) was wanging on about Nolan on The Rest Is Entertainment).

The mask drove me mad in DKR and then Tom Hardy popped up again in Dunkirk wearing a mask!

I saw it in IMAX. I liked it but I wasn't stunned by it.

I was surprised by Matt Damon, I though I was not going to be convinced by his casting but he was good. But I was very disappointed by Tom Holland, I thought he was easily the weakest one. Hathaway, Morton, Pattinson were excellent. Sound, costumed and production design were flawless.

I am not really sure why Nolan kept Calypso and Athena in the script, the were so redundant.
I was also disappointed by music, I thought it was too Dune inspired and very forgettable.

The Critical Drinker is a bit marmite, but his review was good:

Mostly great, but I'm confused - didn't Odysseus have two arrows sticking out of his back after duffing up the suitors? I thought he died in Penelope's arms and then sailing off into the sunset was a fantasy / afterlife thing. But now I Google a summary and it seems not...?

And why does it take them ten years after the end of the war to head for home?

Cyclops thing rushed, disjointed, confusing. He's awake, he's asleep a second later, rock's across the cave doorway, on again, off again, he's blinded, oh, seems like he can still catch them though, Odysseus is outside the cave, nope, he's in... I know there's a lot to fit in but a couple more minutes might have made it make sense.

Apparently 90 mins was cut! Now that's a director's cut that I want to see. 😍

Not in my experience.

It was indeed - in parts.

the shrieking scream of the Cyclops set loads of peoples watch flashing, as did the long drawn out lightning storm. I put my fingers in my ears as I was very uncomfortable.

Felt quite left out, did not realize quite so many people used wearable "health tech".

As it was, my ears were ringing until at least lunchtime the next day (film finished at 9pm for us)

I wonder how many times Zeus law was mentioned in the cut out material :d

3 hours of my life I'll never get back

Just got back from it. Really enjoyed it. I found the constant hammering-it-home comments about Zeus’s Law rather annoying, but I guess they were trying to make a small handful of cultural difference things clear.

Loved seeing the story filmed, excellent visuals, etc. but I did find the calypso “overstepping therapist” role a bit much, and there was a huge amount of skimming over (missing out entirely) odysseus’s relationship with Circe - but I can see how they are working to keep the character of Odysseus more loyal. And the Athena character was totally pointless!

Suitors were excellent, Robert Pattison was a great villain. I thought Menelaus looked disturbingly like Andrew Tate!

Definitely a version of the tale - but still overall enjoyable.

I actually really liked the concept of this Athena. How she was the embodiment of the guilt Odysseus cannot shake, taking the physical form of one of the victims of the sacking of Troy.

It is. So loud in the cinema I was in (a Vue EPIC) that the seats were vibrating. I have tinnitus as a result of a lot of clubbing in the late 1980s and I was fearful of damaging my hearing further. I wish I'd had earplugs with me. I had to put my fingers in my ears. It's not really a laughing matter, especially when you have a sodding headache as well

I just looked it up and one event can indeed damage your hearing permanently

We saw it at a Vue also. I wondered if the vibrating seats were kind of a 4D effect (i.e. being vibrated mechanically to enhance the experience of the sound). But no, Google tells me it was because the film was LOUD.

May have been different in different cinemas, my apple watch didn't go off (set at 90db) and I didn't notice anyone else's either. It didn't seem particularly loud to me. Vue.

Ours was in a Cineworld Digital IMAX. Was definitely too loud. But, i agree, different cinemas can have different settings.
