Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

There were times when the music was too loud compared to the dialogue making it hard to pick out the words but definitely not too loud overall.

It was ok, I like it visually. I studied epics at uni, as part of my English degree and felt there was a lot of modern emotion ascribed to them. Would have liked more gods, did not like Zendaya as Athena.

It took me a while to realize the constant references to Zeus's law was because the Trojan horse was the antithesis of it, hence Odyessus's guilt. Under Zeus Law, a host treats a guest with respect - as the beggar at your door might be a god in disguise. The Trojan horse was accepted as a gift on trust but turned out to be a deception and destroyed Troy. This social contract has now been destroyed. I loved the film and want to see it again as soon as I can. Bloody loud tho!

It didn’t seem particularly loud to me either - also in a Vue (Epic). The cinema has only recently been built so perhaps that has something to do with it?

Sound was fine in our local cinema (Nova) - there was a bit where it all vibrated but it wasn’t too loud, just vibratey.

Oh I thought that she was the manifestation of Athena reacting to having her statue decapitated.

Insanely loud (I went to an Everyman) - the seats were vibrating and it triggered my watch more than once. Good soundtrack though.
impressed by Matt Damon, underwhelmed by Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron.

The violence was relevant to the context so although I closed my eyes a few times I didn’t mind it too much. But overall it felt lacking in something - it’s all about the battles/the psychological story but Odysseus was a much deeper character than portrayed here. Where’s the humour and wiliness - completely missed the ‘Noman’ joke in the Cyclops story for example, which is something I remember from school.

Great cinematography, great use of CGI but lacking in characterisation.

Yes I agree - he was sort of drifting, given up, a little shambolic. The film was driving it as traumatised and in denial. I would have liked to see more of the wily clever Odysseus but that wasn’t really the story they were telling.

Me too. I thought that was nicely done.

I loved the whole thing, except for the Circe/pig scene, which I found utterly horrifying.

I went with my 15 year old, and as others have observed, the trailers were pretty unsettling if you're planning to take a youngster or someone of a sensitive disposition. She was definitely rattled by the Werwolf trailer in particular.

(Those talking of taking under-15s, or who have taken them - a cautionary tale; I had been merrily smuggling DD into various 15s when she was still 14, but on one occasion we were stopped and asked for ID and unceremoniously and very publicly booted out of the Odeon. It does happen, so be warned! She is now 15, and I take her passport with me, just in case.)

Ours isn't an Epic, it's about 20 years old, but maybe the individual cinemas adjust the sound levels or something, it really wasn't loud.

Yes, my DH got booted out of our Vue for trying to get a then 14 year old DD into a 15. They did get refunded though.

I thought it was amazing. Absolutely epic. I managed to take my 13 yo with no problems. He’s very tall though. He loved it as well.

Vue is the best cinema chain for sound on the whole. In Dunkirk you could feel the sound iyswim. If it was an IMAX cinema sound settings will be tweaked for IMAX and may be too much for some. In Cineworld, I once had to ask them to turn a film up! It was the ads that were too loud at our Vue last week.

I think Nolan cannot direct humour at all. When Odysseus says he wants to hear sirens because nobody else has ever done it and survived, it is so out of teh movie character that it falls flat.
