Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

It was a fantastic film but i would definitely reccomend seeing it in the cinema. Its fairly epic and i just don't think it would have the same effect on a smaller screen.

I was left curiously unmoved by it. I thought that it was great visually - but I didn’t feel great connection to any of the characters, and so I felt its length. My favourite scenes were in Troy and with Menelaus and Helen - oh, and in Hades - but I wasn’t keen on Telemachus. And I wanted more of and from Clytemnestra, Circe and Calypso. Perhaps especially Calypso. Her beauty was the only facet we got of her character.

@Puffykins I agree Puffykins- I thought maybe it was just TOO serious and therefore scenes that should have been exciting or moving were not. There were scenes where it really came to life - eg Menelaus and Helen, Circe, the cyclops, the suitors showdown - but I didn’t feel that throughout, other elements felt a little ponderous at times. Samantha Morton delivered her scene so naturally and with such conviction, she was a breath of fresh air. I felt the other performances were weighed down by an element of “this is a serious epic”.

This sounds like I really didn’t enjoy it, which wasn’t the case. It was more like tonally something just didn’t quite hit the bullseye for me.

I really liked the scene with Scylla; it came out of nowhere for the crew and was over in moments within any kind of battle or pushback, which I think was really realistic.

The monsters in the film I think treated the humans in a very real way; they were mostly unbothered by them, didn’t see them as any real threat, just food to be eaten and ignored without malice afterwards. In lots of movies monsters seem overly aggressive and dedicated to killing for the sake of it.

I loved it. It didn’t feel like a long film, it was epic. I’m disappointed not to have a Trojan horse popcorn holder though

Hated it. Did not care for any of them. Just one loud action scene after another. No character development. Cannot understand the 5 star reviews.
Action scenes are so loud - take earplugs. Then put earphones on as well.

We saw it tonight - it's very full on and violent, which I should have expected I suppose! DH loved it and I appreciated it for the epic it was. The cinematography was amazing, and the main cast were excellent. It was odd seeing Sinon played by a trans identifying woman though, especially when her younger self was a boy - and it was very obvious she was the only female in a very male army.

Way too long…..feel as though it was based on Jason and the Argonauts…brilliant acting.

I loved it. No notes whatsoever. Thought the casting was absolutely great.

I took my 14DD (15 in Nov) tonight. She is Odyssey OBSESSED, has read two or three adaptations and listens to Epic constantly. She loved it.

My thoughts:

Casting was superb

Didn't feel like three hours - it flew by.

I thought the thread of 'why doesn't he want to return home' was tied together so beautifully by the idea he has become the men from the sea - his dishonour has such far-reaching and epic consequences. The scenes of brutality in Troy were harrowing. Such senseless violence can only create inhumanity.

Perhaps my favourite CN film to date, although I loved The Dark Knight trilogy. He balanced the tradition and legend with new complexities so well. There was a danger that nothing new was brought to the story (although maybe not such a danger with CN) but it didn't feel tired or predictable at all.

Very good definitely worth seeing at cinema.

Fsoled the Bechtel test ! Wish they would do a film of the book Circe that came out a few years ago

We saw it tonight. It was ok, but honestly a bit disappointing given the hype. DH said the same. The script didn’t run smoothly we felt, however it was wonderful acting from Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway. I also agree that Tom Holland referring to parents as “mum and dad” was weird and unauthentic. Sinon actor was totally mis cast as too weak. Samantha Morton was good and the battle scenes were epic.

Somewhat annoying when a chap two seats down kept on getting his phone out until I had a word!

Saw it this evening and loved it. My daughter has just finished a classics A Level and felt it was an accurate depiction other than the Mum and Dad references!

I enjoyed it although I felt it was a bit too long! After two hours in, I was checking my watch. (I didn’t realise it was 2hr 53m).

Sorry further reflections on what was missing for me - I felt that Odysseus’ relationship with his men was very weakly drawn. He was determined to get them home, but I never really felt the deep bonds of loyalty and comradery. They were mostly nameless and interchangeable and even the two that were recognisable were quite loosely sketched. That then undermined me feeling his trauma at their loss and his inability to protect them.

Can I ask why it failed the Bechtel test? I’m going this afternoon. I have chosen an aisle seat, so I go to the toilet!

I wasn’t the poster but I would say it fails the Bechdel because it doesn’t feature a conversation between two named women having a conversation with each other about something other than a man which I think is the definition of the Bechdel

@Hatey@EineReiseDurchDieZeit I actually don’t think I recall there being a single conversation about anything between named female characters - unless Penelope’s maid had a name that I missed!

I loved it, but it really really is not going to translate to a small screen. It’s all about the scale and impact of the big screen. If you’re on the fence, definitely go rather than wait.

DS, a Christopher Nolan fan said he categorically won’t go to see Odyssey (it’s a vanity project, should have been a tv series, using special effects for monsters is the easy way out).
DD from Italian Classics High School went with friends expecting not to enjoy it but had a great time. Matt Damon got a thumbs up and the only criticism was that the Lotus Eaters episode was barely mentioned. She’s even talking about seeing it again (imax) with another group of friends.
I’ll be waiting for it to come to streaming.

Yes, a Circe film would be great.

I wore my loop Experience earplugs theoughout as I’m keen to protect my hearing as much as I can.

Our Percy Jackson obsessed DD12, who has actually read The Odyssey, and has been eyeing up The Iliad, is begging us to take her. I had hoped it would be at 12A but am really not sure about taking her to a 15. Although she’s happily watched all the Harry Potter movies. Any thoughts from those that have seen it?
