I think Billy Crudup and Kate Hudson are fantastic casting in Almost Famous - as is the casting of the whole film.

Daniel Day Lewis in everything is brilliant. And Julianne Moore is great in everything.

I have never recovered from the wrongness of Cameron Diaz in Gangs Of New York or Anna Hathaway in Interstellar.

We watched Sense and Sensibility last week and were so disappointed with it. It's just beyond dull, and Hugh Grant is surprisingly terrible in it.

it is my favourite film of all time! I love it! I think.it is beautifully filmed.and brilliantly cast Even Emma Thompsom and Alan Rickman being too old doesn't blight it for me though I never understood what on earth anyone would see in Hugh Grant. He is hopelessly foppish and boring IMHO.
But that aside I think.it is perfect.
So just goes to show that of course that one man's meat is another mans poison which is making this an interesting thread.

Shoezembagsforever · 01/12/2024 15:36

@StepAwayFromGoogling Jeanne Triplehorn and Marisa Tomei were the first two preferences for FWaaF, but were both unavailable filming other things.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 01/12/2024 15:42

Jeanne tripplehorn would have been good. Andie macdowell and Bill Murray are a grossly mismatched couple in Groundhog Day, ugh

I'm fascinated by "bad" (for lack of a better word) actors who are perfectly cast, like tara Reid in the Big Lebowski, or John Travolta in pulp fiction.

Keira Knightley I'm not a huge fan of but she was perfect for the duchess of Devonshire film, forget the name.

Worst: Nick Cage as Captain Corelli

Best: John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons

Also surprisingly Hugh Grant in just about everything, especially since he was allowed to move on from being a bumbling but pretty Englishman

I have to really disagree with that. I think Hugh Grant was wasted in all those bumbling roles. I think he’s a much more versatile actor than that. I find him very watchable.

OnlyFrench · 01/12/2024 16:29

@Calliopespa I think we're actually agreeing about Hugh! So talented, especially in the thing about Jeremy Thorp (and Paddington 🤭)

Oh yes, sorry I read that as a “worst” from you for some reason. I think he’s incredibly talented with a real light touch - a much much cleverer actor than he is acknowledged as being.

blackcatsarethebestcats · 01/12/2024 18:49

Just started watching The Radleys film on Sky having loved the book and I’m very aggravated by Kelly Macdonald as Helen. Should’ve been someone like Anna Maxwell-Martin. (Helen McCrory would’ve been perfect for it, RIP.)

Loved him in Cloud Atlas

I saw a trailer for that one with the girls he psychologically tortured ( I think?) . I don’t want to watch the movie as I find that kind of thing a bit disturbing, but I had to admit he seemed brilliant in the trailer. He acts as if he’s not acting. Meryl Streep can be a bit like that too - though obviously ABBA demanded slightly different skills.

wildfellhall · 02/12/2024 09:05

Deborah Kerr is wonderful in everything.

Worst: Andrew Scott as the hot priest. I know this will be controversial, but there is something about him that makes my skin crawl. No clue what Paloma Faith was seeing when she watched it!

Best: David Tennant in Takin Over the Asylum. First thing I saw him in, and he played the role to perfection.

"The Duchess"?

I agree, best performance of hers by a country mile.

deeahgwitch · 04/12/2024 06:32

I never got Andrew Scott as the hot priest either @tilypu

The casting if the original BBC pride and prejudice was brilliant.
Casting for the 2022 matilda musical was pretty rubbish.

Oh I liked Emma Thompson in that! “ If you want to throooow the haaammmer…”

Calliopespa · 04/12/2024 07:25

Ian McKellen in the Critic: best

Kensingswell · 04/12/2024 07:30

Cate Blanchett is another who plays roles convincingly. Notable is her excellent irish accent in Veronica Guerin.

BAD are Jenna Colemans contact lenses in Victoria, the series on Netflix. It makes her face unwatchable imo.

Amaranthasweetandfair · 04/12/2024 07:34

Everyone in the west wing is brilliantly cast. Especially Toby.

wildfellhall · 04/12/2024 07:51

Anna Maxwell Martin in Line of Duty 🙌

Also in Motherland and Ludwig. I love her.

I couldn't stand Emma Thompson in Matilda. I hated that performance like I hated Meryl Streep in Into The Woods. And both actors can be total genius. But mamma Mia broke my Streep respect a bit; The mannered performance, the dungarees, the soft focus 🤦‍♀️.
But Thompson in the Children's Act is incredible - when she's good she's amazing.

Emma Watson as Belle in the real life Beauty and The Beast. She is nowhere near what Belle should look like.

I agree she is very plain looking, as the name suggests, she should be beautiful. Much worse than that, she can not act.

BigDahliaFan · 01/12/2024 06:29

I was just about to write I thought she was unexpectedly brilliant.

The actress in 4 weddings and a funeral...'is it raining, I hadn't noticed'

I agree Renee was excellent as bridget

Has to be Beth Dutton for me

I have a relative who is a drama queen, she admired Beth Dutton a lot and even started acting like her 😂😂

wildfellhall · 04/12/2024 08:54

Emma Watson in beauty and the beast was auto tune disappointment.

She's fine but she was out passed by Downton Abbey Beast.

I like the LALA land casting. Apparently Emma Watson turned down the Emma Stone role I think?

Renee in Cold Mountain anyone? 🤦‍♀️

Yes, I agree about Anna Maxwell Martin in LOD and motherland.

I liked Emma Thompson in Matilda. I don't usually rate her, and I didn't know it was her until someone told me.

I loved Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

I think Fleabag’s sister Claire was absolutely perfectly cast, rivalling even OC’s performance. Their sibling relationship was so heart-wrenchingly and accurately portrayed.

Yes, I didn't much care for Fleabag, but her sister was mesmerising. I also really like Andrew Scott as an actor, but he was in no way credible as any kind of Catholic priest. That wasn't his fault, that was the screenplay having him do all kinds of things that simply weren't credible. Shag people despite your vows of celibacy, sure -- happens all the time. Holding a Catholic wedding ceremony in a garden, nope.
