If you've seen it, come here!

I m a bit sad about there being no more related characters. Dd thinks the kid at the end is a relative of Obi but I can't see how.

Loved the ending with Luke but I was surprised all the old guard have now gone.

Hated the hamster like creatures. It feels like R2D2 was 'cute' so they try to include 'cute' in the films.

Was obvious Kylo Ren and the killing of his enemy.

I enjoyed it a lot, and have enjoyed MNetters’ critique!

Lweji · 21/12/2017 18:17

I have to say that although the milking scene was a bit odd, DS and I had just been asking ourselves how the hell did Luke survive in such barren island.

As for eating the porgs, Chewie had already killed one and roasted it. Eating it was just a step forward, so I didn't like the "teary eyed, don't eat us" bit. And Chewie doesn't look like a vegetarian.

As for the rehash of the previous movies, history does repeat itself. People tend to make the same mistakes, and not much is new in real life. It makes sense that a new generation ends up facing similar challenges to their parents.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kylo going full dark.

And loved Rose.

I also liked how Rey and Kylo interpreted what was the same event in the same way. Both thought the other would turn to their side, but none did.

HanSolo · 21/12/2017 21:52

Maybe I'm not squeamish about where milk and meat come from, but I didn't find those scenes disturbing at all.

You wouldn't. You're a shoot first guy. Wink

"You wouldn't. You're a shoot first guy." Grin

Dozer · 22/12/2017 00:17

Of course he is!

Littlebelina · 22/12/2017 21:57

Seen it for a second time and enjoyed it more. Still not as good as empire but did get the chills when Snoke died

Sevendown · 23/12/2017 00:57

In TPM qui-gon jinn said there was a prophecy that someone would emerge who would bring balance to the force.

What if that is Rey and never was Anakin???

Dozer · 23/12/2017 11:07

I just don’t fancy men in high waisted trousers! Was the same with Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice.

Perhaps because my Grandad and elderly male nanny wore them!

HanSolo · 23/12/2017 15:45

Seen it for a second time now.
I now wonder if the dark side rejected Rey, because she was too filled with light, that's why it shut her out of the mirror. It looked like Kylo Ten behind the glass when she steps forward after asking it to show her her parents.

I forgot to mention, but I did like the little touch of having two suns for Luke's death. (Refracted sunset)

HanSolo · 23/12/2017 15:46

Kylo Ten...snort.

I also think Rey said "haven't you got a cowl you can put on" rather than towel now.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/12/2017 16:05

Loved the ending with the 2 sun's and the music.

The rest.. Think I liked it. A lot of filler moments that were pointless. Rose wasn't to sure on. Leia :-(
Wonder if Luke be in the next one somehow. Seems bit pointless killing him off otherwise. Weird to think another 2 year wait and then that's it. Be over. Loved Force Awakens and didn't hate this one but don't know. Something felt like it was missing.

Hels20 · 23/12/2017 20:22

Letsgofly - the thing that was missing was Han Solo! I was a bit annoyed that he wasn’t really mentioned. I would have thought Leia would have said something. And would help to know some back story as to why Leia and Han were estranged.

I liked it but without Han, it was always going to have something missing for me

HanSolo · 24/12/2017 02:00

why Leia and Han were estranged.

So what do you think, a princess and a guy like me?

Lweji · 24/12/2017 07:34

Wasn't it Kylo? They couldn't cope as a couple.

IIRC, the mirrors are also about how you see yourself. Rey was at peace with herself. Kylo clearly doesn't like himself.

Or her future and her past are all her, Rey, nothing changes. No demons to face.

We could go on.

Dozer · 24/12/2017 07:43

I thought they fought over kylo doing jedi training with Luke? But can’t remember which one wanted to agree for him do it (leia?) and which didn’t (han?)

GrouchyKiwi · 27/12/2017 10:46

I mostly enjoyed it (and I've really loved reading people's interpretations here, and explanations of why they hated it/loved it).

I spent quite a lot of time feeling sad about Carrie Fisher (and properly cried at her scene with Luke).

I'd probably give it 4/5 at this time, though this might change on a second viewing.

Kylo Ren was a much better character this time around. I still like Rey, though agree that sometimes Daisy Ridley couldn't pull off the dialogue. Captain Phasma was woefully underused yet again. Thought Holdo was excellent. And I too really liked how the men's heroics were misguided in the face of the more sensible approach of the women in the film.

Middleoftheroad · 28/12/2017 11:09

I'm late to the party due to a never ending bug.

DCS loved it (so thanks MN for the Meerkat codes) but it left me cold. I do like the Porgs though.

Kylo Ren is not a patch on Vader. There were few surprises, though what a waste killing Snoke off so easily. There feels very little mystique about the Force and Yoda was just silly.

I don't care about any of the main characters. Laura Dern was unbelievably wooden.

Leia flying and the bit with Luke at the end felt like such a cop out.

But my kids loved it as I loved seeing the original in 77.

I did like Rogue one, I loved the way Vader just kicks butt. I miss Vader.

slightlyglittermaned · 28/12/2017 12:55

I think the middle film in a trilogy is always going to feel a little incomplete until the third film arrives.

TBH TLJ is making me feel more excited about the next one, because although I loved TFA it basically was just a remake of episode 4.

slightlyglittermaned · 31/12/2017 13:49

ohhhh this thread just made the whole casino/Rose/Finn subplot make perfect sense:

Lweji · 31/12/2017 14:05

That thread has an interesting discussion about Holdo's secrecy.
Again, I think it's all about acting as a group, as part of something (and accepting others, including women, may know better) vs the individual (individual initiatives, individual motivations).

In the end, Rose didn't accept Finn's individual sacrifice either.

NoCryingInEngineering · 02/01/2018 09:23

Even later to the party (had to wait till I could see it with my Dad (I may be 39 but these things matter)).

I was interested in thecat's take that it was all about failure because to me it was all about what it means to be a hero. Is it jumping in an X-wing and blowing shit up (Poe, repeatedly, with various degrees of sucess) or sacrificing yourself to make a doomed mission slightly less pointless (Rose's sister, Finns attempt cooked by Rose, Holdo)? And what's the point of a hero? Does waiting for The Great Hero to return actually stop the next generation getting on with doing what needs to be done? And does it doom TGH's generation to repeat a failed pattern on the grounds that TGH fixed the fatal flaw so it will all be roses this time.

For avoidance of doubt, I enjoyed it and would like a 2nd viewing though some bits were down right daft and it had Beethovens 5th syndrome at the end (big climax, crashing conclusion, and now I must just finish this little theme, big climax etc etc etc)

slightlyglittermaned · 02/01/2018 10:45

It's just got so much more to it than a fan-service retread of The Empire Strikes Back. I want to go see it again now but DP hasn't seen it yet and fitting in a 2.5 hr film will take some juggling.
