If you've seen it, come here!

I m a bit sad about there being no more related characters. Dd thinks the kid at the end is a relative of Obi but I can't see how.

Loved the ending with Luke but I was surprised all the old guard have now gone.

Hated the hamster like creatures. It feels like R2D2 was 'cute' so they try to include 'cute' in the films.

Was obvious Kylo Ren and the killing of his enemy.

OP posts:
RustyPaperclips · 18/12/2017 23:35

I really enjoyed the film, especially the scenes with Rey and Kylo. Adam Driver was phenomenal imo, and he really portrayed the torture inside himself whilst doing very little. I too am developing a crush on Kylo with the good hair Grin

I also liked Rose but I did think that Finn was too much in the background. I do have a big soft spot for Oscar Isacc though so I liked Poe being featured more.

One thing we didn't understand though was the reason that the code breaker received his reward. Apparently the info he gave about the resistance making their escape proved to be true, but we didn't think that Finn and Rose knew about the plan so how could the code breaker know?

Also, how on earth did Rey get back to the Falcon?

Sorry if these points have already been discussed, I needed to write them down before I forgot!

Dozer · 18/12/2017 23:44

The Falcon is a lucky charm, if the remaining few in the resistance all stay in it all will be well.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the luke skywalker bits?

Like a PP’s idea about hux / kylo destroying each other and thereby the baddies. Don’t think we’ve seen an ordinary character beat a jedi/dark jedi, eg through brains, yet.

The bit with maz thingy was, like mary poppins leia, stupid. Only reason to have it must be she has some key part to play in the next one.

wonder if the laura dern character was introduced partly so the film passed the Bechdel Test: the last one only just passed and despite having lots of good women characters much of the dialogue is man to man or woman to man.

GoReylo · 19/12/2017 00:27

I liked Luke's story, though I wish he'd got over the comedy grumpy old man bit quicker. I liked how he looked and sounded younger when he saw R2, and how he winked at C3P0, touches of his old self. I don't believe that the Luke of the original trilogy would have considered killing his nephew - his twin sister's child, his best friend's child - not for a millisecond. It explains why he was hiding away on an island and why Kylo hates him, but it's at the expense of the character we've known for decades. I assume he'll be back in the next one now that it can't be Leia's film anymore.

RustyPaperclips · 19/12/2017 00:49

Oh and I am obviously a sucker for marketing as I would love a porg!

HanSolo · 19/12/2017 01:06

Rusty- DJ (benicio del Toro) knew the plan because Finn was radioing Poe.

DH said Rey took Snoke's shuttle to escape the.damaged ship- she told Finn when she arrived at Krayt and had cleared the rockfall, apparently. I hadn't caught that bit either.

GoReylo · 19/12/2017 01:10

I'm being particular about my Porg selection. I want almost a cartoon-cute one, big eyes, nice and fat, chunky feet. There's a lot of variety out there. Some of them are definitely pale Porg imitations. If anyone sees an example of Peak Porg please share!

RustyPaperclips · 19/12/2017 01:59

@GoReylo please let me know when you find the perfect Porg. I love that the actress who plays Rose dressed up as a Porg for a Halloween party

RustyPaperclips · 19/12/2017 02:08

HanSolo we must have missed that. We knew that they were communicating via radio but felt that it wasn't made clear that Finn (or Poe) knew of the plan at that point, let alone DJ.

I know that Rey was said to take Snoke's ship. But where, and how did she end up back on the Falcon?

Rey asked Chewie to pass on a message to Finn if he saw him first. That made me think that they all left at the same time. Or did Rey take Snoke's ship and travel back to fly the Falcon?

Lweji · 19/12/2017 08:20

wonder if the laura dern character was introduced partly so the film passed the Bechdel Test

Her character was important, IMO. It represented the long game vs Poe's impulsiveness.

If it was chosen as a woman to pass the test, good for them.
I thought this was a movie of good female characters.

Lweji · 19/12/2017 08:21

And re Leia's hair, she changes her hair every time she goes to a new planet.
Has no-one, Luke included, never noticed this?

You missed her joke about it?

FlaviaAlbia · 19/12/2017 08:30

RustyPaperclips I quite like the lego ones. I think the furry ones look a bit soulless and evil, but I was reading that a group of Porgs is called a murder. Bit unimaginative but possibly fitting if they got you alone and you weren't a jedi or a wookie...

Lweji · 19/12/2017 08:33

Finn and Rose's storyline was POINTLESS.

Not at all:
How else would the escape to the salt planet fail?
How else would the message spread to the next generation (hints of a young Anakin, the children in Temple of Doom)?
How else to show what happens when you don't trust the people (women) above you?
How else to give a lesson about those who profit from war? (Nice upmarket Mos Eisley Cantina)

weetabix07 · 19/12/2017 11:09

I've seen it twice. Loved it but;

Personally wish they had cast someone else instead of Daisy for the part of Rey.

I would have not bothered with the code breaker. I can't stand that actor either..

Was very sad to see snoke go. I love the baddies. I hope the next one will see Kyle become the ultimate baddie.

I loved the porgs. So much so I had one with me at the midnight showing. Ahem.

Dozer · 19/12/2017 15:46

I’m all for good female characters too, but in addition would like to see much more of them interacting with other female characters. The “Bechdel Test” scenes seemed forced and were not a proper part of the narrative because apart from Rey the main protagonists are still men.

placebobebo · 19/12/2017 17:50

I liked it.
It showed that the resistance and Luke wanted to re-establish flawed systems that were rotten to the core and couldn't see their own demise.
The Jedi full of hubris and arrogance. The Republic, like Canto Bight shiny on the surface and corrupt underneath.
Luke thought he was better but when the time came and he saw the damage Kylo would do to those he was personally connected to, he reacted in just the same manner as Yoda and Kenobi. He was making the same mistakes. The New Republic again allowed the First Order to Rise unchecked, repeating the mistakes of the Republic.

The end showing a chance for a new generation, free of those ideals to see what they can make of it.

HanSolo · 19/12/2017 18:02

Lweji- no, I didn't miss it. I'm just saying she has had a new hair style every new planet. As she was a senator/diplomat, she must have had to be very inventive!

Dozer · 19/12/2017 19:31

Maybe she takes a US style approach to grooming for work and has a filofax full of intergalactic salon contacts!

nooka · 19/12/2017 19:57

My problem is more why the filmmakers decided that Luke would have been making such bad decisions in the first place. He was never part of the Jedi training system, and the whole point of the Return of the Jedi is that he didn't follow Yoda and Obi wan's advice but went with his heart. Yoda and Obi wan also had already learned about failure from their experience with Anakin. It was a totally unnecessary rerun and to me utterly unconvincing. Much like Yoda in the prequels really when the Jedi were a bunch of idiots.

Littlebelina · 19/12/2017 22:18

Liked it but didn't love it. Some of the imagery was amazing.

Loved Snoke's demise, most of the Rey, Kylo, Luke stuff, liked cocky Poe (and him being proved wrong). Liked DJ (wonder if we see more him in 9?)

Meh about Finn's story ( bit repetitive) but liked Rose and was sad when I thought she died (but cross that they didn't actually have the guts to kill her off after making me feel emotion I didn't feel at Laura Dern's death although I liked that plot) . I loved Domhall Gleeson but wish they would script Hux more like Tarkin less like a panto villian! Wish they hadn't killed off Luke, felt too early and would have been better in episode nine.

Hated flying Leia, was naff. Phasma was a waste of time, why bring her back at all. Felt like they had the concept of a really cool character that they didn't know what to do with.

Fine with Rey's parents being nobodies but doesn't help the Mary Sue accusations. Feel we do need more back story on Snoke we probably won't get.

Lweji · 20/12/2017 08:16

More subtly but more than the first film, I see this film as a parable about the US.

Kylo as the mad, easily enraged, but childish new leader.

Panto second in command.
The old resistance leaders stepping aside.
Holdo reminded me of Nancy Pelosi.

sinceyouask · 20/12/2017 08:50

@placebobebo yes! I loved that too.

lookingforthecorkscrew · 20/12/2017 12:04

I found it grubbier and scrappier than The Force Awakens, and all the better for it. There were some v daft ‘Oh Star Wars’ moments though, like floaty dead Leia - she looked like Mary Poppins. And all of Benicio Del Toro’s eccentric (and seemingly pointless) performance. I love Finn, he lights up the screen when he’s on, but he didn’t actually achieve anything did he? Both the things he tried to do (knock out tracker thing, blow up big cannon) failed.

I enjoyed it though, despite the daft bits. The Luke stuff bored me a bit, ‘Blah blah blah get over yourself. Oh you’re dead? Oh well.’

None of the characters are strong enough to carry comedic moments really. John Boyega’s prob best at it. Though I feel it was worth admission price alone to see Kylo’s impressive man tits. More of him knocking Hux about, please!

OrinocoDugong · 20/12/2017 20:17

Meh. 6/10. Some cool 9/10 moments but too long with a lot of dross.

Fun porg fact. They weren't initially part of the plan, but the island they were using was full of puffins and it was easier from a cgi pov to cgi the puffins into porgs than to remove them completely.

Straycatblue · 20/12/2017 22:37

This ^

It felt like a disjointed film, the whole Finn and Rose go off to the casino on a pointless mission that they didnt even need to do in the end , felt like I was watching a completely different movie.

They could have cut that whole section out except they wanted to show the kids at the end playing with dolls reinacting Lukes last stand to show that "the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down " had been lit and that the "nobody" slave child at the end was also force sensitive as he used the force to pull his broom to him before looking at the shooting star.

Lots of rumours that the 3rd movie will jump forward several years to show that the rebellion has grown again from this spark and also to explain away Leia's death due to the passing of time.
