Thank you for link about the atmospere ,TIANC ... those facts are breathtaking . Wish the skies had cleared for you shodatin but setting the alarm is excellent idea , as are soft drinks and keeping an eye on nutritional needs . Hope you feel much less hot & horrible today , and have good chats with your brother - sometimes having visitors over in hot weather is less fun than you'd hoped due to high expectations and tiredess .

So happy to hear you managed some gardening yesterday TIANC and were able to enjoy the sun baking you - a true treat. Yay for de - grumping ... can be as intricate a process as untangling the nets over your brassicas. < many hungry Cabbage Whites here >

Thought you might like the Dolls! I have no credibility , though - I didn't see them in the 70s & dh , huge fan , never did either , but a couple of years ago they did a few UK dates & their agents must have made a mistake in booking them into a minute basement venue . Well , those boys put on as much of a show as if they 'd been in LA... a friend of mine was in the venue early , looking glum , missing her late husband & wishing she hadn't been persuaded to come out , when Mr Johanssen sashayed past , giving her a huge smile and a "Well, hello there " in his accent - did made her laugh .

Hope kizzie is cooled , that snowmash is feeling as optimistic as she can muster , and is resting when that's too tiring , & that madmouse , pixie and butterpie are well today .

Glasses of delicate soft drinks all round - something like elderflower but with a hint of herbinesss , perhaps ?

ThisIsANiceCage · 28/06/2011 21:57

AHHHHHHH! That's better. Smile

cityhobgoblin · 28/06/2011 22:27

Excellent , TIANC! Have an almond cake to go with it , or a sultana finger . ( am missing simnel slices & hope I manage to bake some before next Easter )

If you're not abed early after tiring few days , shodatin , I wonder if you're out looking for the Space Station ... < realises can't find ISS thread >

ThisIsANiceCage · 29/06/2011 00:31

Er, hob, what's this about netting brassicas against butterflies? Boggle! Have I seriously misunderstood how the universe works?!

Hope you've had rain today, shodatin, not just horrid heaviness, but that it didn't disturb your brother's visit. I hope he's still doing OK, and you've had a lovely day together.

Good day here, too. To my astonishment I've been able to finish yesterday's job in the garden. Hurray! (Not an impressive job, just chuffed I managed two days on the trot. I look like this -->Grin)

Hob I bet you're busy Being Political this week. Do take care of yourself, won't you, and get enough rest?

Wonder how everyone is getting on in this heat? madmouse, it was your "weekend" today, wasn't it? Hope you and DP and mouseling had a good day.

snowmash hope you've been able to get out in the sunshine - if you've had any.

butterpie, kizzie, thinking of you both.

There's summer jasmine blooming in the cybergarden at the moment, and the delicate scent drifts across the darkened terrace, where we can gather in the cool night air.

shodatin · 29/06/2011 12:16

Morning all, and sorry for delay. I distinctly remember posting last night, after midnight, but either Mozilla's playing up again or I forgot to press "Post", which is extremely annoying as it was quite long and I know I'll never remember half of it.
We did have a good day thankyou to hob and TIANC, with lunch in town then DB almost fixed the laptop without either of us knowing why. Council
Man came just after brother left and sprayed what were definitely wasps - an amazing number flew out of nest as I "flew" back indoors, as he was wearing full gear, but all was well and will go out later to pick flowers.
I forgot to look for ISS - tonight's at 10.36p.m. but can't remember name of post for further times and dates.
A bit cooler yesterday and again today, but no rain at all and still damp.
I managed to listen to New York Dolls eventually, not enthused - maybe too tired yesterday, but agree they'd be great live.
Congratulations on two-day gardening TIANCand Grin back
Good luck with netting hob, we used it on our brassicas against pigeons in form of old kitchen window netting, not very smart after windy days.
Hope everyone has good day, and snowmash gets home date soon.

shodatin · 29/06/2011 17:06

Some light rain this afternoon - never in my life have I noted such an occurence before, but this year is different!
After an hour or so on home-page, I seem to have acquired a fully-laden spare, just in case it goes pear-shaped again, so am more relaxed with posting and hope to have time to look things up later, and finish this month's literary effort etc.
Hope everyone else has had a good day getting things done, and has the same sense of achievement as TIANC with two days in the garden. Grin.

cityhobgoblin · 29/06/2011 18:11

Sorry for gap in posting - even minor PC issues can foil me . Cheering your rain , shodatin - had none here , but very relieved it's fresher today .
Brilliant to hear you've managed to sort out your laptop problem , & you'll be able to get back on with your writing . Your DB's visit sounds very enjoyable - was he in good spirits ? Very quick service from your council for the wasps .

Thank you for brassica netting tip - chimes with my v experienced allotment neighbour who'shas finally given up on conventional netting & is trying mosquito nets , & am starting to think only v close mesh can work . I think my favourite woodpigeon's been nibbling my sweetcorn ears , & today I enjoyed seeing M Blackbird with a ripe cherry in his beak today ...their biggest treat of the year .

Sorry TIANC , not only can I not "do" jokes , I sound offensve when I try . So pleased you've been able to do some more gardening - any particular favourite plant at the moment ?
I'm trying to rest , thank you so much , and am indeed trying to get to some political things - may be more fun than useful toil , though.

Another one here hoping madmouse enjoyed her family time , and I think from her other thread she may have had an important / nervewracking meeting at work , so best wishes about that .

Hope kizzie's well & her garden blooming - hope you're talking to your ailing rhododendron ? it will appreciate it .

Really hoping you're not sweltering , snowmash , and that you can enjoy TIANC's peaceful darkened terrace with glowing candles & blissful scent of jasmine .

shodatin · 29/06/2011 23:34

Hi hob, Glad you're having a rest before doing the political stuff again, and I'm so pleased it's going to be fun.
DB is still improving but slowly, and I can do so little to join in physically so we're limited for entertainment, but am glad we have each other again.
On subject of jokes, I can't do them either, it was always DB in the family so I know he'll be recovered when we can laugh at silly stuff again.

Hope your laptop's behaving now, doesn't it take an age to operate once the gremlins get in? DB reminded me of all the information videos and forums/a?
available for help, it just takes even more time to find them.

I missed the ISS tonight, could have been a few minutes late, shame, but at least I could see a star again this evening. No more rain though.

cityhobgoblin · 30/06/2011 00:11

How touching about the sign that will show you your DB is fit againshodatin , & roll on that day . I'm sure he's every bit as happy to have you back .

Thank you for consoling me about my clumsiness .My PC 's just suffering from a few glitches as running low on memory , thanks for asking - I must investigate some of these sites / fora - I never seemed to find a relevant one and gave up < kicks self > I dread proper gremlins & have been trying to learn more .

Isn't it a beautiful night , TIANC ? Very suitable for sitting out on your scented terrace . I know a jasmine bush with a robin nest tucked inside - very pretty watching the parent birds going in and out , joggling the blossoms . Hope you've had a good day.

Sorry you missed ISS , shodatin , & will see it next time - I didn't catch it either but have been enjoying time in garden.

Hope we all have a soothing night's rest .

ThisIsANiceCage · 30/06/2011 00:50

Great you've had a cooler day today, shodatin, and really glad you had a good day with DB.

Nooo, hob, you're not at all offensive - some days I take everything completely literally! Of course, other days I'm actually on the ball. Which makes DP's evil-pun-habit a bit of a Russian roulette. Grin

But this is a serious thing about brassicas, then? Fly-netting of some sort? Good grief, I shall never attempt to grow them. Am currently losing the battle against vine weevil in plant pots, life-miner in salad leaves, woolly aphids on the apple and enough slugs to feed a hedgehog sanctuary. Our cherry tree is netted (sorry blackbirds), or the only harvest would be a guilty splurt of red on the wall.

And thank you for asking, hob, yes I do have a sort of Plant of the Week, as the current work is about making a new home for a chaenomeles (Japanese quince). I always wanted one, but it's not so much cheering up its current corner, as depressing it with a neglected bedraggle.

Hope political stuff goes well, hob. Will be thinking of you tomorrow.

madmouse, do hope meeting today went well.

Hope snowmash, kizzie, butterpie all had good days as well, as far as possible. And hope we all have a cool, restful night and wake refreshed in the morn.

ThisIsANiceCage · 30/06/2011 00:54

I am truly the world's slowest poster - 50 mins to write that!

hob that's gorgeous about your jasmine-dwelling robin. Sleep well...

shodatin · 30/06/2011 01:53

Thanks f or posting TIANC, and for good wishes all round. Fifty minutes was similar time for me until we got laptop improved, so I know how much time it takes out of the day.
Good luck with chaenomeles, a lovely plant, particularly under a window where one can admire it in bad weather we have in the Spring```````````````````````````````````` Sorry, just dozed off there so will say goodnight all.

shodatin · 30/06/2011 10:55

Good morning all, another beautiful day but rain not even due so will forget about it. Just had a look below wasp nest, and there are 3 dead ones with half-a-dozen furry little bees flying around the dwarf campanulas which self-seeded in my large (strawberry) pot. Am so pleased they are no longer competing with wasps, and rarely seen so many together lately. Will make a second sowing of Limnanthes I think, to extend season, as I shared the first batch and hence have space for a few more, particularly when first sowing is seeding and they're looking scruffy - so pleased to have them again!

hob, the ISS info is in Chat, but nothing now for another month.

cityhobgoblin · 01/07/2011 00:09

Evening everyone , sorry for uselessness & hate to admit it's not been due to political efforts - fought off dh's flu , heh heh , but doing so made me a bit more jelly like than usual & am still catching up with vital things . Had lovely chance to spend time with dh & enjoy glorious sun

Absolutely loved hearing about TIANC's chaenomeles - though not the pestilential miseries , poor you - and shodatin's flourishing bees . Feel for you on writing a post taking forever ...me too , if you mean brain / physical energy ( unless I've got the wrong end of the stick , which you are always so gracious about ) .

Will come back in a bit to finish post - hope madmouse , kizzie, butterpie and dear snowmash sleep peacefully.

ThisIsANiceCage · 01/07/2011 00:13

Hurray for your thriving bees, shodatin!

Do you think we could have a bee-hive in the cybergarden? Do we have any beekeeping talent in the garden (nothing would surprise me), or could we invite a friendly apiarist to take advantage of our abundant flora?

Still no rain? You're not really in Yorkshire, are you? It's actually the Sahara.

Relaxing day here - have been virtuous and rested and repotted the chaenomeles .

Hope hob's day went well.

Anyone watching the tennis, btw? I haven't bothered this year, but DP's keen. Andy Murray through to mens' semis, but no Williams in womens' final.Shock

Ooh, now I'm inspired to add a cool jug of Pimm's beside the hot flask . Help yourselves, snowmash, kizzie, madmouse, butterpie and visitors. Or there's non-alcoholic punch if you prefer.

shodatin · 01/07/2011 00:36

A beehive would be wonderful TIANC, and I wish I'd thought of it earlier. One of my Norfolk friends made herself some hives and found a local bee-keeper to help, but all I can remember is that she fed them sugared water for the winter and used to go and tell them things, an old country custom it seems.
Today there were a couple of showers, so not quite Saharan weather, although I'm keeping an eye on water containers for birds and bees.
Glad people have relaxed today, and thanks for Pimms - it's been years since I had that.

Will say goodnight, while I can still remember to click "post"- sleep well all.

ThisIsANiceCage · 01/07/2011 00:48

X-posted again, of course!

Glad you've fought off DH's flu - but does this mean you've been down with a touch of it? Not nice, and know what you mean about jelly-like. Hope you regain strength fairly fast.

Mm, I was wondering why I post so slowly here. Think it's because this is my social time with you guys, so I take time to read your posts (still miss important stuff, as am daft). But of course everything takes longer on foggy days - not that I get so many of those now.

Hope your own fogginess is not too bad. Glad you had a good day with DH in the sun.

ThisIsANiceCage · 01/07/2011 00:50

Will say goodnight before I x-post any more!

Wishing us all good sleep and a refreshed morn.

shodatin · 01/07/2011 11:57

Morning all - Another beautiful summer day, and enough small showers that only the pots will need water this weekend, other stuff is growing well and now seems to have established itself in the border/s (that's one decent size and one more of a space near a wall at present).

Another pointer to DB's mental health is if I get offers of help with heavy work, so this space might be a proper border one day, without the huge euonymous root which needs to be dug out. Experience tells me not to nag nearest/dearest male for this kind of work, eventually the day comes when they actually enjoy this type of exercise, but am still waiting this time, no
hurry.
I can also remember when I used to look forward to eventful weekends, now I just try to avoid the seaside crowds. Does anyone have exciting plans for weekend?
Snowmash, you must be close to leaving hospital now, so all best wishes that it goes smoothly.

shodatin · 01/07/2011 23:46

Have to say "Goodnight" now as eyes want to close.
Hope everyone had a good day and enjoyed the sun.

ThisIsANiceCage · 02/07/2011 00:52

Hurray for your showers, shodatin - did you have that amazing rain-on-hot-earth smell?

Sounds like you're a good partnership with your brother - you understand him really well, and he can help with the heavy lifting as he improves.

The chaenomeles has indeed been strategically repositioned to be visible from the house, and should be a bright splash of colour in early spring. If it survives my tender ministrations, of course.

May go into town with DP this weekend. There may be coffee and cake... Grin

Hope everyone else has a good one. And a good night's sleep tonight.

shodatin · 02/07/2011 10:01

Morning all ! TIANCI didn't realise it was raining at the time, being indoors, so missed the lovely smell (not very much rain, after all).

Hope you have a good weekend, and that you do manage to find some cake.

cityhobgoblin · 02/07/2011 12:36

Hi all! Glorious sun here too , shodatin - quite amazing . Glad your borders are flourishing but you're not likely to get rain for them today , I think .

Apologies for yesterday but still slower after catching a touch of dh's flu - thank you so much for thoughtful wishes, TIANC... mind no foggier but that's starting from v low baseline Grin. You've made me realise my good luck there , as I would have expected to get that . ( oh yes , puns are a hazard for me at all times - never have a sharp - witted moment ! )

You are a sweetheart for setting aside time for snowmash's thread as " my time to socialise with you guys " & I think this thread is a sanctuary for all of use . Hope you're buzzing with caffeine & replete with cake this weekend , even if not able to to go into town .

Roll on the day your DB feels up to taking a spade to your monster root, shodatin . Agree it's nice when a person can undertake a task wholeheartedly .

Know what you mean about avoiding crowds . Do you have any accessible areas of open space locally where you can sit & enjoy the feeling of being out without the rushing & jostling ? That's what I like to do , but know it's hard to reach some of these places .

Hope madmouse , kizzie, pixie and buterpie are well and that snowmash is feeling exhilarated at the thought of coming out , though it must be very daunting . Hope we all get into the sunshine today .

shodatin · 02/07/2011 15:28

Hi hob, Hope you're enjoying lovely sunshine too. The only place I know which is outdoors but not overcrowded is the back garden, now safe from wasps again but hardly exciting. Apart from emails and Skype, have been trying to replace slow and unreliable browser with new Chrome, which will probably be worthwhile but have slight preference for garden, so am off out again while it's fine.

kizzie · 02/07/2011 19:14

Hi everyone - hope your weekends are going well.
Im having an easy one - doing as little as possible!

Had a good 2 / 3 weeks but quite shaky last couple of days. I think I said a few weeks ago that I think some of it is hormonal (my GP says peri-menopausal) - so will put it all in the journal to see what patterns.

Enjoyed the tennis yesterday - altho Murray didnt come close to beating Nadal.

Take care everyone x
