Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I am back! Doing my first fast day for about a month due to a hiatus due to an injury. I still can't exercise properly but hopefully will be back in the gym in a couple of weeks.

CheshireSplat · 09/05/2022 12:03

Hi everyone. I'll join in if that's okay. Have done 5:2 a couple of time over the last decade and got on well with it. Was active on these threads.

However, last time, about 3 or 4 years ago, I plateaued and just could not lose weight. I thought it was because of my "5" days and needed to reset my attitude to food. I've tried mindful eating (loved loved loved the Gillian Riley book and it really made sense) but I am still failing to control my eating with my mind.

I do well with rules and whilst this won't change my long term emotional attitude to food, I am not losing weight, in fact am getting heavier and am now the heaviest I have ever been, pregnancy aside, at 11 stone 9.5, 5' 3". BMI 28.9. So time to sort out my physical health.

harriethoyle · 09/05/2022 15:57

Welcome back @CheshireSplat we'll cheerlead you whenever you need it!

I have had the most manic work day which meant lunch was a piece of peanut butter toast eaten standing up which isn't ideal although only came in at 189 cals. Canneloni for tea on return from the vets (having the new dog MOT-ed) then collecting my husband at 10pm. Going to be exhausted by the end of the day!

Hi @KylieKoKo - injury sounds nasty if it's led to a month out. Hope fasting will keep things in control until you can train again.

I fear it's too late for that @harriethoyle but I'll soon lose anything I've gained

EatYourFive · 09/05/2022 18:31

Signing in for the lovely new thread- yay!
Fasting today but for one day only, off to Heathrow very early tomorrow for another work trip, it's hoihg to be so intense that I can't fast when away. But I've also been so stressed that I don't seem to put on any weight like I always do when on holiday. Back to normal next week.

EatYourFive · 09/05/2022 18:38

Oh and kitchen closing at 488 today. Good luck this week everyone and see you next week!

Dairyqueenie · 09/05/2022 19:24

Hi all - on the home run for my first fast of the week.
two more pounds came off on my last weigh in on a Sunday morning so I’m hoping this arc continues into this week.

harriethoyle · 09/05/2022 19:30

Good luck with your work trip @EatYourFive - I'm on a work course Weds - Fri and they always have a fabulous fry up in the morning so I will NOT be losing weight this week...!!

That's great @Dairyqueenie well done. I'm just waiting for supper at 8pm (currently in the oven) and kitchen should close on 570 for day one of my b2b.

EatYourFive · 09/05/2022 19:49

@harriethoyle thank you! Fry up sounds amazing, although I am sure the continental breakfast buffet I'll be having will be just as good!😁 Enjoy your course and the tasty breakfasts!

Beautiful3 · 09/05/2022 20:55

Kitchen closed at 512. Well done Monday fasters.

incognitodorrito · 09/05/2022 21:15

Very weak willed, kitchen closing at 829 cals, need to be very strict tomorrow !

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/05/2022 21:35

Kitchen closed on 600. This has been the hardest b2b I have ever done
So glad for breakfast tomorrow

CheshireSplat · 09/05/2022 23:18

I finished today at 550. Not bad for a first day. Back on it on Wednesday. Pleased to have started again.

sweetgingercat · 09/05/2022 23:33

Kitchen closed on 451 today thanks to a beautiful salad I picked from the garden and even some wild garlic flowers… still feeling a bit hungry but hopefully it will be easy to sleep. See you all tomorrow for day 2!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 10/05/2022 08:16

Welcome cheshire! Just signing in to the new thread. No FD today as family visiting, then off on hols on Sat… May try for Thurs/Fri this week.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/05/2022 08:22

Small one pound drop after my horrid b2b, I was expecting it to be honest so wasn't a surprise.
Got a very long day ahead - started work at 6 and will finish at 10pm so going to be kind to myself
Will be back on healthy eating tomorrow and another fast on Friday
At some point, will start losing

sweetgingercat · 10/05/2022 09:23

Clocking in for the second day of a B2B. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow! Who's with me?

Well done Absolutely Knackered Cow. That's a loss already! Welcome Cheshire...

harriethoyle · 10/05/2022 09:25

I'm with you @sweetgingercat not much loss overnight but it's TOTM and that always makes me retain weight so I'll just stick to it today and look for losses next week...

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 10/05/2022 11:41

The frustration of the up and down tyranny of the scales did my head in and seriously messed with my fasting resolve. So I decided a while ago not to weigh myself and let my clothes do the talking. I know it's a strategy that wouldn't work for everyone, but I'm much happier this way!

harriethoyle · 10/05/2022 12:46

Whatever works for you @sweetgingercat - although I do find the up and down frustrating, I also try and look at the general trajectory, so as long as month on month I'm losing I can cope with the up and downs!

I've spent the morning wheelbarrowing garden waste to and fro... I'm knackered and starving! Surely that counts as good exercise?!
