Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Had a work trip today so powered through on a latte until I got home and had steamed veg and sea bass at 7.30. Tired and a bit grumpy but the best FD for me since I've restarted 2 weeks ago. And I avoided dreaded children's tea time. Have had about 300 calories so am going to have a warm milk so I don't wake up starving at 3am.

Does anyone else lick their players on a FD? I always think I'm going to have every last calorie as I've counted them.

@CheshireSplat lick their players?🤔Well done anyway, that's excellent fasting! I can't fast when I travel for work, it's too intense (and of course I want to make most of all the food and drink that I don't have to pay for!!😁)

Day 2 B2B off to a very good start, new record low weight this morning! Feeling rather hungry but motivated today.

Ha ha… lick your plates! Yes, that might be me! Back on 2nd day of B2B and feeling good. I didn’t measure out my calories yesterday but since I didn’t do anything different from my usual1 egg, salad and smoked salmon with pitta, which always comes in under 500 I’m not going to beat myself up. But I will measure today.

but…. I am feeling bad about my non fast days… Over fri-sun I had three white bagels (1 on each day) and pudding at a dinner party and an ice cream. I felt so horrid and stuffed and I guess I’ve gone into a feast and famine mode which is not helpful. I’m okay with strict rules on a fast day but I can’t seem to make the right choices on a nfd. Does anyone else have this issue? What to do…

@sweetgingercat I am definitely in feast mode most weekends but I try and stick to low-ish food choices M - F so it's only on Sat and Sun I go crazy! The other thing we will often do at the weekend is a big breakfast mid morning then nothing until tea which I figure helps limit food intake a bit, just by virtue of having one less meal...

This was my problem a couple of years ago. I wasn't losing weight on 5:2 and put it down to eating too much on the 5 day.

Why don't you keep an eye on the scales over the next couple of weeks? If you're maintaining then maybe you need to change something. But if you're losing, then it'll demonstrate that you aren't eating back all of those calories.

I feel like I've eaten more than normal on a few of my 5 days but I've lost 2 1/2 lbs in 2 weeks so obviously not. Maybe the contrast makes it feel like more.

Last time I came off 5:2 altogether, while I tried to get my slightly disordered eating under control with mindful eating. However, it didn't work, I just got fatter little by little so I'm back here. I'm figuring my mindful eating can wait but my physical health needs a hand. Like you, I'm good with rules. I don't have willpower without them.

@sweetgingercat 3 white bagels a pudding and an ice cream really isn't that bad at all over three days. Certainly nothing to feel guilty about.
The whole point of this diet is that you don't have to deprive yourself all the time.

I just had a lovely huge bowl of chili and rice with cheese and I don't feel bad at all as I'll be eating far less tomorrow.

Kitchen closing here on 670 which gives 1175 for the two days after I realised I'd over caloried a slice of bread yesterday. Phew!

Oh and I also tend to eat what I like at weekends but just exercise a bit more if I can.. often have a take away or eat out as well..

I was going to fast but had a mole removed yesterday and am feeling a bit wobbly Onam postponing til Friday. However, whilst I'm on my 3rd cup of tea i haven't eaten anything so will be "good".

And I’m travelling back from hols Grin. Eating a normal breakfast here then fasting for the journey back, since that’s got “ potential for stress induced eating” all over it, with my zillions of children.

Well done @Beautiful3 . I did a Friday FD yesterday too which is very unusual but was delayed from Wednesday. Friday night is usually feast and beer night in our house but as DH was out I just had steak and salad and a slimline g&t. I then consciously broke my FD by eating 3 slices of the children's pizza which came in at about 100 cals each.

So my day yesterday was 929 cals but that's probably about 1500 less than on a normal Friday. 😁

I weighed myself this morning and was 11 stone 2 3/4. I started at 11 stone 9. Will probably be a couple of lbs heavier after the weekend but if so that'll be 4 lbs down in 3 weeks which I'll be happy with. (Hopefully that isn't just blood loss from mole removal, as they had 2 people dabbing constantly for 20 minutes....)

Hi I'm very new to this. Tried my first fasting day yesterday and ended on 790 calories. Not great. Will try again today. I am generally counting calories on non fasting days too just because I have a lot to lose and want to make healthier choices. Anyway just wanted to say hi 👋
