Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closing on 742 which is a bit high but luckily day 1 of b2b was quite virtuous so I've snuck in at 1300 total for the b2b! Hot cross bun for breakfast tomorrow and pasta salad for lunch before driving down to the Midlands for this bloody work course 🙄

Closing kitchen at a measly 770 cals, not my best fasting week. May try and hang a 3rd FD on tomorrow.

sweetgingercat · 11/05/2022 00:45

Kitchen closed at 685 here. I'm still okay because I had a good day yesterday. But boy, it's been hard this afternoon!

Really looking forward to something great for breakfast. Well done everyone else!

CheshireSplat · 11/05/2022 14:24

Thanks for the welcoming messages. I'm on my second FD. Completely forgot this morning when I made a white coffee. D'oh! The milk was an extra 25 calories I didn't need.

DH is cooking us salmon for tea but won't be home until about 8.30. It's going to be hard from about 4 til then, yikes! I'll be armed with raw carrots and celery..... Any tips to stop me breaking? I'm thinking I may go for a 600 day and have a cuppa soup or I'll dive into the DC's leftovers at tea time.... Better to be 100 calories over than 100s.

Beautiful3 · 11/05/2022 18:54

Third back to back completed. Kitchen closed 610. Welcome @CheshireSplat . Well done Wednesday fasters. I cannot wait for breakfast tomorrow.

CheshireSplat · 11/05/2022 19:57

Only day two and I've blimmin' sabotaged it already when making the DC's tea. That 5pm time has always been hardest for me. I had crackers, with cream cheese, bits of banana and cream. I've stuck 350 calories down for the binge and I'll be super good for lunch tomorrow. Not giving up so soon, though it's tempting. If I don't change, nothing will change!

Kendodd · 11/05/2022 20:06

Can I join?
How do you get such an accurate calorie count?

CheshireSplat · 12/05/2022 06:40

@Kendodd I use my fitness Pal. It's a pain when cooking from scratch though have to be honest.

incognitodorrito · 12/05/2022 07:19

Welcome ! @CheshireSplat same ! I couldn’t handle the up and down of too many weigh ins so focus on fitting into clothes i previously couldn’t ! I eat quitebasic food during FDs, but you are right, adding home cooked meals on other days to MFP is a pain, once you’ve saved them once they tend to pop again on suggestions.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/05/2022 07:44

Welcome ken. I used to eat only veg + pre-counted meals on FDs because I really dislike MFP etc - so I used to have ready soups, meals etc. It worked fine.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/05/2022 07:13

Signing in! Last FD before my holiday, though I may do a mini on the way there tomorrow because travelling = stress = eating bad food.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/05/2022 08:01

Welcome @CheshireSplat ! I always try and have my calories before kids tea otherwise it's torture
Third fast of the week today so will be joining you @TheWayTheLightFalls.
My holiday is in 13 days and I'm fasting 7 of those ..
Better start seeing some losses after that

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/05/2022 18:08

I am kitchen closed on 520.
Back on a b2b next Monday

TheWayTheLightFalls · 13/05/2022 18:25

Done! Stir fry for lunch, omelette and veg for dinner, coffee, diet Coke. Busy day, which helped.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/05/2022 19:06

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls - I'm starving
Have saved myself a rich tea for later so I don't lie awake hungry

harriethoyle · 15/05/2022 17:01

Hope everyone has had a fabulous weekend. I've spent the weekend catching up with one of my oldest friends and it's been a blast! B2b mon and tues and then a single on Thursday to rein myself back in... I'll shout tomorrow for a Monday roll call!

Rodedooda · 15/05/2022 18:38

Hi everyone, I've not posted on this thread before but have been on the 16:8 one since January. I've been losing around a week on average, but have been doing more of a 19:5 or 20:4 and feeling generally good on it. I tried 5:2 years ago when kids were small and I didn't last more than a week. Daily fasting is working as I don't do well on tracking everything!

Where I fall down is on days when there's various social occasions eg bbqs and I'd like to try either modified ADF or ADF in order to have an 'up' day when required!

Is there anyone here who does 4:3 or similar who would tell me what schedule they do? I know it's advised to eat well the day after a fast (or 500 cal) but what times do you start and finish eating to make it work for you?

harriethoyle · 16/05/2022 07:06

Morning gang! Who's with me for a Monday fast? This is day 1 of a b2b for me...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 16/05/2022 07:40

Good morning @harriethoyle, I'm in! After a couple of weeks of intermittent international travel (for work sadly) I'm ready to claw back some of the progress I had made. Day 1 b2b, good luck today's fasters!

CheshireSplat · 16/05/2022 07:43

I'm in for week 2. Am 1.5 lighter than this time last week even though I've eaten out 3 times in the last few days. Still feel really bloated and overweight, but want to make this change. Off to make a black coffee now and have a massive glass of water.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 16/05/2022 07:51

Morning all
Joining for a b2b
Also planning a Friday, Sunday and b2b before holidays next Thursday Grin
After my third fast last week I finally started to see the scales turn and I didn't put on during the weekend. I ate well but tracked calories
I am hoping for a good loss this week

harriethoyle · 16/05/2022 08:02

Fabulous!! Loads of us on FDs today. We got this!

OP posts:
FupOff · 16/05/2022 09:13

Morning all! New to this thread but not new to 5:2, however this is my first time doing it properly for several years. I'm not overweight but carrying a few eextra pounds I do not want 😂 I'm going to fast today and Wednesday. So far had a black coffee and a mint tea. I cycle to work so it feels extra hard to not eat anything but hey ho, I'm also planning on going to the gym after work to keep busy during that 5pm-7pm window before I eat dinner!

CheshireSplat · 16/05/2022 10:32

Good plan Fup, that timezone is often my undoing too....

KylieKoKo · 16/05/2022 10:34

I'm fasting today.

Prawn and veg stir fry planned for later. I'll try and survive on miso and herbal tea til then.

Good luck fellow fasters.
