Fasting / 5:2 diet

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Morning all... I'm in. I'm on for a B2B and then a third fast day later in the week - maybe Thursday or Friday. Good luck everyone!

I also tend to eat the same things on fast days because it's easier/safer. My go to food is salad with a bit of home made dressing and either grated parmesan or smoked salmon slices. Miso and kimchi are great lunch snacks.

@KylieKoKo @absolutelyknackeredcow me three.. I am RAVENOUS! I think that's the result of five days in a row of totally unfettered eating and drinking. Quite honestly, am looking forward to a break from it over the next few days! 😂@sweetgingercat we will be FD twinsies, I'm doing a third on Thursday to undo the damage from the last week.

That's great to hear @harriethoyle . I've also been ferreting away chocolate, so am pretty hungry! I'm going to eat some miso and kimchi to keep the wolf from the door!

Me four @harriethoyle, @absolutelyknackeredcow and @KylieKoKo! Absolutely starving today, tomorrow will be tough!! Had a miso soup for lunch and now trying to fill myself with sparkling water whilst my colleague next to me munches on crisps..

Aargh today's been hard!😩I also have a headache but it's not too bad, hopefully an early night will sort it out. Kitchen closing at 425, saving some calories for tomorrow.

I'm feeling a lot better after my prawn stir fry. I have saved enough calories for a small bit of cottage cheese and some cherry tomatoes to have before bed as I can't sleep if I'm starving hungry.

Just started 5:2 again after a few years since I last did it. Would like a stone or a touch more to come off before the summer, perimenopause and working from home weight gain has crept on this year. Busy day at work today on Day One, in back to back meetings, so having just had my dinner I've come in at 502. Not massively hungry (ask me in an hour!!). Definitely need a break day in the middle. Admire anyone that can do two days back to back! Good luck everyone.

Kitchen closed at 640 which I'm happy with as I was responsible for feeding DC tonight. That includes a loss of control teaspoon of hummous as I was putting it back in theh fridge. Rock and roll. Would usually have a cup of tea about 9 but won't as I've gone a little over 500 planned but overall I'm happy with today (day 3 this time around).

Logging on. Few weeks in now weight stalled around the 12lb loss mark but I’m hoping to get things moving again this week. Will be fasting Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. Finding it hard not to binge on NF days - any tips? I feel like I spend my FD fantasising about what I’m going to eat the next day and then it’s a bit of a let down so I eat something else and then something else in a kind of insatiable quest for taste nirvana. I’m wondering if I’ve got long covid taste buds? Things used to taste amazing on NF days in yesteryears.

Signing in - yesterday was properly horrid and my husband came home to find me in a darkened room with a horrid headache.
Feeling better this morning
I agreed that I would abandon the fast if I felt dodgy so we will see how I get on.
First time I have had such a bad headache
