Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Ooh wow @harriethoyle It will taste SOOOO good tomorrow, better because you've kept to the fast day today!

harriethoyle · 19/05/2022 14:26

@sweetgingercat I'm OK - quite busy with work today and so that's helping. Curry and broccoli lined up for tea and should come in c. 550 cals...

Ladies, I've failed. Miserably failed! Got home, bbq was on, fizz was in the fridge, sun was shining... I think we all know what happened next! 🙈 at least today was IF compliant 😂 I'll skip breakfast tomorrow too to try and limit the damage...

Sounds worth it to me. You can always fast another day.

CheshireSplat · 20/05/2022 07:55

Sounds fine Harriet. Congratulations on the work news!!!

On a slightly unrelated note, I was worried that BigChocFrenzy wasn't on these threads. I've seen that she has left Mumsnet but if anyone is in touch still please pass on my thanks to her (she won't remember me from 1000s of others) but her dedication is what helped me before and why I came back.

sweetgingercat · 20/05/2022 09:19

You know @harriethoyle the beautiful thing about this diet is its flexibility. We're all trying to slot losing weight successfully into our normal lives and yesterday was your third fast day in the week (you were already on top of it!).

I'd totally do what you did, knowing I could catch up with an extra day next week/meal off today.

Well done and have a great weekend!

Beautiful3 · 20/05/2022 18:05

2nd fast day completed today, at 577. I normally do 3 back to backs, but couldn't face it this week. I'm still pleased that I did the 2 days. Big shout out to @BigChocFrenzy who got me into 5:2, "I miss you!" @harriethoyle your Wispa comment, really made me laugh!!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/05/2022 07:40

I'm with you @KylieKoKo and @harriethoyle .
My stomach is sore for some reason so should make it an easy fast

FupOff · 23/05/2022 09:01

I totally forgot to update on here last week but finished with a successful fast last Monday, did another on Wednesday and back on it today.
Weighed myself this morning, and I'm 1lb lighter than last Monday, AF is brewing too so I'm pleased I'm showing any loss 🙂

EatYourFive · 23/05/2022 09:12

Good morning, day 1 b2b for me today!

harriethoyle · 23/05/2022 09:17

Morning!! Day 1 b2b here. Tuna thin and a chicken curry and broccoli on today's menu 🤞

Thatslife1 · 23/05/2022 09:38

Going to try 16/8. Maybe 6pm to 10am. Could I have milk in my coffee in morning or stick to black?

sweetgingercat · 23/05/2022 17:25

Joining (late) to say I’m on the first of a b2b today. So far, an egg and some pea shoots which were delicious but in no way filled the gap!

incognitodorrito · 23/05/2022 17:45

Late joiner here too, day 1 of B2B. Calories so far … Two boiled eggs, portion of shirtataki noodles with king prawns and 2 tiny squares of fruit nut chocolate …. all coming in at 550 cals.

harriethoyle · 23/05/2022 18:15

I added a tin of chickpeas to my curry and then halved it to increase the size and reduce the calories. This is the fasting maths I like! 😂
